It's so dark in my room, it's spoopy. Spoopy room.

While I have nothing but dumbydumb things to say about Harmonic, the fact that he's been around for as long as he has and with such a big mouth is nothing to sneeze at. Remember how Legacies of Dondoran got 4,000+ downloads? What I wanted to know going into Skyborn is if any of his ego is earned. Is he some sort of closet genius who's only become more brilliant over the years, or is he just another washed up has-been that got lucky/showed promise in the early age of RM (see also: Legion)?

I have nothing bad to say about Harmonic, but that's an interesting point. XD I can't help but wonder if that's the machine that drove the success of a lot of old-school RM projects (The Way, ABL, Legion Saga, Iron Gaia etc) that are so revered. Was it a case of true genius and prodigy, or did many of those older developers simply get lucky because there was no real criteria back then? Or a mix of both?

for the way and legion saga and iron gaia? probably! the way is terrible, the other two are just meh nowadays. while i never cared for ABL, lys's other experimental projects were pretty creative and forward-thinking. of that list, he was easily the most talented.

however, the insular nature of the community and the lack of real critera, as you put it, definitely shaped how we made games. it's very different now. i know that i can't convince myself to make shitty small games any more, because i don't really want to make a game just for RMN. i spend my gam mak time working on my big project with karsuman, because we want to make something for people to play outside of the community -- ABL would be laughed out of town anywhere outside of gamingworld, even, with its shitty menus and weird mess of graphics.

i want to make another epic monster dungeon explore! 2 style game, but I know I'd spend four weeks on it instead of four hours. that's time i could spend playing path of exile working on my proper project, because there are expectations when you want more than 50 people to play your game.
Most popular RPGMaker games are relatively short, though...

I think 40+ hour RM games are dying or just a bad idea to begin with unless you have some real talent, drive and time behind you/the game

Let's just say expectations were lower back then.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Also, when RPG Maker 2000 was translated, it had only been 6 years since major game developers stopped making SNES games, so RPG Maker was inherently super impressive. RPG Maker games looked graphically far superior to other games by independent developers. If a tool as simple as RPG Maker were released today that could make games that looked like Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Arkham Asylum and Bioshock 2, but all shared the same interface and very similar gameplay, I think games that were made in that engine would be just as well-received as long as they were relatively polished. I think Legion Saga and A Blurred Line released today with that level of graphics would make the cut.

@Corfaisus

lol, most excellent.

It's good to see that some companies have the guts to stand up to pricks, unlike the countless game developers that let SJWs and nostalgia addicts censor their games.

I don't entirely see the correlation between social justice warriors and homophobes.

Tomorrow is Sunday, which means church. Y'all ready for church?

I still haven't heard a single one and I'm already sick of them. Now they're infesting my Final Fantasy V? You can't do this to me, Sin!

I'm going full Ram Butz!

My favorites are still Aerith's Theme and the Lost City of Amdapor, but this is an exquisite Tidusmix, Lockez. It's a solid third place in my mind, which is still quite admirable. Thank you for sharing.

You're Not Alone is also really good, because the pacing of the song makes it start off sounding like Tidus is actually laughing for the first half, and then it gradually gets sillier.

But, uh, mostly because of the thumbnail.

I'm slated to release Chronology this year, and this really makes me think about it's place!
