Ketchup is a table sauce. Traditionally, recipes featured ketchups made from egg whites, mushrooms, oysters, mussels, walnuts, or other foods, but in modern times the unmodified term usually refers to tomato ketchup. Tomato sauce is the more common term in Australia, New Zealand, and India, and is almost exclusively used in South Africa.

Tl;dr - I don't really think it matters what it is, so long as it makes the food taste good.

There's a difference and it's not the name. Wikipedia can be changed, remember, and is dependant on the knowledge of the people posting the information.

You can literally taste and see the difference between the two. I have both in the house right now. One's a darker red, but thicker. The other is a lighter red and runnier. One tastes spicier and sweeter. The other is a bit more bitter (you can taste the tomatoes better).
I kinda get that sauce is that cooked sticky red stuff boiled on a pot with a bunch of dried stuff, while ketchup's just ingredients mashed together in a blender (kind of).

I... don't think I have tasted tomato sauce before, so I can't really compare myself. Tomato ketchup's fairly common though (and much cheaper too, for some reason). I'm guessing Banana ketchup and Tomato sauce taste similar enough.
Total pros go for unsweetened ketchup though, which throws a wrench into the works. It's not very sweet, and it tends to be much darker and less runny, but it's clearly not just tomato sauce.
Well, yeah, they still have vinegar and spices in it though, and how it's made is a bit different, so... ;p

I have learned so much about tomato sauce and ketchup today.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I can taste and see similar differences between two diffrent brands of ketchup. The terms mean the same thing, it's just that Heinz claims they put more spices in their particular brand of ketchup than most Australian brands do. And they probably add high fructose corn syrup for that distinctly American sweetness.

It isn't really about sauce. It's about language attitudes. Australians like the way they talk, and they don’t like the thought of losing expressions like 'footpath', 'giving a stuff', or saying 'zed' for 'zee'. Mind you, this is a pretty strange place to draw the line. Other far more iconic expressions have dwindled with nary a peep. (When was the last time you called someone a 'cobber', honestly?) But maybe this item is extra sensitive because it's being framed as a foreign corporation dictating language change by fiat.

So even if there’s no difference in the actual sauce, there’s a difference in the words. 'Tomato sauce' is fair dinkum Aussie, while 'ketchup' is an American intrusion to be resisted. Will this become a selling point? We’ll just have to see which way the chips fall.
I figured people would get stuck on that and not read down the page further.

There is a difference in how they're produced and the ingredients used. It's like the difference between jelly and jam.

Fruit preserves; jelly, jam, fruit spread, fruit curd, fruit butter, conserve, confit, chutney, and then we have marmalade...

RMN - where you learn more about foreign food than getting dragged to a foreign-themed restraunt by your parents. Or your waifu who is trying to 'expand your horizons' and it leads to a night on the pot after too much Indian food.

You really want to get bamboozled? Read the comments section of that Good Reason Blog LockeZ quoted from. Easy to find. Just Google Tomato Sauce vs Ketchup.

Over here if the bottle reads tomato sauce, it's ketchup and ketchup bottles also have ketchup.
Jam and Jelly are not the same thing?

I believe there's a genuine technical difference between jam and jelly, but it's not one you'd notice just comparing the two at the breakfast table. I'll look it up.

Edit: Jelly is made from fruit juice: jam is made of fruit pulp.

Over here we have ketchup and curry. The curry is just a less sweet version of ketchup.

Why it's called curry is beyond me, though. It has nothing to do with any Asian rice meals, let alone curry.

At least for my phone, I just swipe them down. It can be tricky but just hold it for a millisecond and drag down.

Not sure if it will be the same for you though!

Nope, it just scrolls down. I'm on a Samsung galaxy if that means anything
There was some amazing demonstration of tomato based products expertise here, I just go with pasta equals tomato sauce, burger equals ketchup. :p

Not sure either, Multilaser MS45 here.

Got to add, this new avatar makes me imagine the big Sgt. Owl saying your posts in some he-man educative message manner but with a Broforce military voice.

Hm, I have a Samsung galaxy. Maybe try dragging/swiping upwards? That works for me too. Like, I know you can't click on it because it takes you to X, but try just holding your finger on it for a sec, if that makes sense lol
It's hard to explain.

If not, can you set it to Desktop View?

I have to hold the dropdown menus. Then when it asks me if I want to open in a new tab and I exit that window, the menu stays open without loading the page it links to.

This, however, worked perfectly! Thanks.

No problem. I struggled with it a lot myself before I found that trick.
