Chrono Trigger or FF6. I like neither of them, but SNES has so many shitty RPGs, that these are the only standouts.

*Braces for inevitable outburst*

I wouldn't expect someone who was 2 when the SNES came out to understand anything about SNES RPGs.

Yeah I'm not going to flame you but I will remind you that basically every gamer and games journalist alive disagrees with you. The titles might be outdated or something but that's paramount to saying that you don't really think Citizen Kane is very good (lol modern thrillers are more sophisticated).

Chrono Trigger.

I second this. It is a must!!!!!
Rosebud.

Anyway, Chrono Trigger is a pretty solid choice, it's not my favorite SNES RPG but it's good, especially for it's time! I remember when it first came out and I played it at my friends house. When I found out that you got to travel through time, I thought the sheer idea of being in control of that was amazing. SNES + Shitty RPGs = Dividing by 0. I won't talk about FF6 much, as you mentioned you're looking for something other than DQ and FF, but I do have to say it's one of my favorite RPGs and probably my favorite FF. (6,7 and 4 constantly fight for that spot)

Other recommendations that haven't been mentioned are:
Highly Recommended: Tales of Phantasia, Lufia II, Bahamut Lagoon, Star Ocean.
Recommended: 7th Saga, Treasure of the Rudras and Front Mission.
However, all those games but Lufia II and Front Mission need to be downloaded via translated ROM as they never made a Western release.

Also I'll vouch for the Breath of Fire series, ace games.
7th Saga did make a Western release. I don't think Front Mission did, though. I could be wrong, though!
You're right about 7th Saga! It did make a western release, however so did Front Mission. =D

7th Saga may be the only english released JRPG that was made much more difficult in the english version.

And Front Mission is yummy.

VW and Brandon are right after I triple checked: Front Mission was never released via SNES outside of Japan. However, chill out. It's my bad, I made a mistake, hadn't slept that night.

And because of what you've done you shall have many more sleepless nights :(
The SNES version wasn't. But Front Mission 1st, which is the DS remake, was released in the US last year. So, in essence, Front Mission was released in the US.

On the topic, I echo suggestions for Earthbound, 7th Saga, and Bahamut Lagoon. Also, Tales of Phantasia did get a US release, but only the really shitty GBA version.
