THOUGHTS ON INDUSTRIAL FANTASY/STEAMPUNK

I wouldn't say I'm an expert on the matter, but I enjoy a good clockwork mechanism that looks like it could have been built by a mad genius in the late 1800's.

The theme tends to not be seen as much as your typical fantasy or sci-fi (or just tends to fall within those two), so it can be hard to find a good industrial fantasy or steampunk game...

Closest I've played recently were "Remnants of Skystone" and (to some extent) "The Spirit Engine" (and "Arcanum" if I go back even further)...

Any more recent (and good) games to recommend? (There's this, but it's not released yet; Alpha testing is only next month...) And anyone who brings up "Damnation" deserves a good thrashing -_-

There's a game currently developped by Arkane Studios called Dishonored that seems to be borrowing quite a bit from Steampunk.

I remember looking forward to this. Beautiful steampunk in this game. Final Fantasy XII had steampunk elements, I'm also a huge fan of the style.

If I had better pixeling skills I would try to create some steampunk stuff.
Oooohh, nice ones, definitely need to add these to my list, thanks!

Definitely enjoy the stealth games too, steampunk is just icing of the cake for that one (for Dishonored I mean).

I always felt FF series was more of a steampunk and cyberpunk fusion, depending... Though yeah, FF3/VI definitely had a lot of it.
A game I discovered a little while back is Erenor, it may not be what you want however as it's an online text-based multiplayer rpg, not like a MUD though just textual descriptions anyway it's currently fairly small and still in beta but is a very good game and nearly full release anyway plus it's calls itself magicpunk which sounds like what you want. For example one of the classes is an element wielding mage while another is effectively an engineer, two modes of transport are airships and dragons and one of the pics of the demon army shows them with a flamethrower tank.

Hmm, interesting; hadn't played games like this in a long time; sure takes me back. I'll have to give it a better look when I have more time to sit down and soak it in, thanks :)
I may be completely wrong because I haven't played it in a while, but I think the "evil" nation in Baten Kaitos had some pretty heavy steampunk elements going on.
Bioshock probably isn't strictly steampunk but I'd say a lot of it is reminiscent of steampunk stuff. And Bioshock Infinite is probably even more steampunky than the original was.

Gratuitous Tank Battles is also kinda almost steampunky. Though maybe that's what they call Dieselpunk.

There seem to be no lack of steampunk shooters either. Airship battling fighter squadrons and whatnot. Like Guns of Icarus for example.

If you like puzzle games, there's one called Cogs.
Hmm, I've heard that about Bioshock, and having seen some clips, it sure does fit the theme (if in a twisted way). I'm not much for shooters, though, maybe I'll just leave that one in my back pocket for a rainy day ;P

As for Cogs, definitely up my alley! Many thanks, much appreciated!

I like steampunk. Rush have done a good job using steampunk as the backdrop for their concept album, Clockwork Angels. Can't wait to check out the book.

I think certain elements of Steampunk have been used throughout RPGs, namely Lost Odyssey and FF9, but I haven't really seen one use the aesthetic completely.

This game has been cancelled.

Just to clarify. Fable III has a similar aesthetic, Dark Cloud series, and the original Jak game are more suggestions.

Edit - I can't believe I forgot about Machinarium!

Machinarium? That...looks so familiar. *quick search* Ah yes, of course, it's on Steam!

Getting a good list out of this, thanks everyone!
Steambot Chronicles - Mech RPG (PS2) played it once, steampunk enough
Nostalgia - RPG (DS) never played it, saw it at some store
Syberia - Adventure (PC) imagine a town basically run by "automatons"
Thief 2 - Stealth (PC) medieval entering the industrial age or something
Wild Guns - Shooter (SNES) cowboys vs robots the game
Steel Empire - SHMUP (Genesis) Don't remember if this was actually steampunk or not, I just remember a lot of blimps.
Also Dark Cloud 2 maybe, never played it.

I hated Steampunk before loving Steampunk became mainstream. I still hate it.

Haha, your definition of "mainstream" covers quite a broad spectrum if you consider steampunk that popular :P

I loved that game! Controlling the mech's were actually really fun! I wish I had beaten it though. I'd say that game was steam punk.

Dark Cloud 2 had the same style going for it as well.

I love Steampunk, Dieselpunk, and the like. It's starting to garner some much needed attention in the creative world.

The Five Fists of Science is a very Steampunk-esque comic featuring Mark Twain, Nikola Tesla, and other scientists.

Full Metal Alchemist (and FMA: Brotherhood) and Last Exile are great Steampunk Animes. Last Exile is done with steampunk art style but because the technology they use isn't exactly steam power (it's some sort of anti-gravity liquid I think?) it could be argued to fall outside the realm but it's still fantastic.

I also particularly like Steampunk Costumes and Cosplayers. This link being a sexy, sexy example.
My game London 2105 is an alternate future steampunk game...WITH ZOMBIES. I think it is fairly plain to see that I like steampunk, anything that gives someone an excuse to wear a gas mask and a top hat at the same time gets my stamp of approval.
