HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY MAPS ?

Posts

Thanks for the long list of great tips. :D

Now, I already fixed the carpets in the house and remove all the trees in the classroom. However, I can't cut down anymore tiles at this moment.

For the house, I removed those two trees near the bathroom and rearranged the others so they would be more sensible. I also relocated a few other things around. I kinda like the way it looks now. One thing is, how do I add a door at the bathroom ?

Now the class, the width is already at the lowest as possible (17).

I could probably shift the left wall to the right, and those bookshelves and right wall could be moved to the left. But then, the window will be cut off by half, and I would have to add those dark tiles in where the walls were. I 'm not sure if I should do that. Either that, or I could add a sink at the right side.

Oh the poster... LockeZ told me to put in because classrooms usually have some kind of poster. The one I put in is a reference to Charlie 's role in MMBN5.

Now the school entrance, I fixed it according to Chris' advice. However, I guess I need to put in those dark tiles around the map so the players would know which paths they can take.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

The thing you added on the wall is not really a poster, it's just... a giant painting on the wall. Maybe it has a white background around it, but since the wall is white too it just looks like it's painted right on the wall. Also I meant one of those motivational school posters, not random anime art, they would never post something like that on the wall in a classroom. Also I've never seen a poster of any type that was twice as tall as a person, that's insane. Just get rid of that and go back to having the wall empty...

Do the thing you said with the edges of the classroom. Move the window to the right. Black background is better than empty floor, 99% of the time.

Don't use dark tiles around the map in OUTDOOR maps, come on man. Only use it in indoor maps. It represents the edge of the room or building. In outdoor maps you need to actually design the map so that the directions you can't go are blocked off, with buildings or fences or trees or whatever. If it's physically possible to walk in a certain direction, the player should be able to walk in that direction.

...why the fuck is there a giant super mario pipe in the middle of the street, does your game take place in the mushroom kingdom?
The picture was transparent, so there was no background. Twice as tall as a person... I 'll just change it a bit then.

And my game takes place in a mixed universe. The Mario pipe isn't there for fun, I was just putting it like some sort of trashcan.

No. Changing the size and giving it a non-transparent background might turn it into a believable-looking movie poster, but that still doesn't make it into something that should be on the wall of a classroom. Just delete it. The poster thing would have been funny but you don't get it and I'm done trying to explain the joke.

Yeah, fine. I might find something else.

For the door of the bathroom, you prolonge the top of the wall as well as the wall itself all the way to the left, leave a 2 tiles high and 1 tile wide hole where you want the door to be, and then put an event with the picture of a door in its place. As for the eventing on the pages on the right, look up the tutorial (it's 2k3, right?), it will be more interesting then if someone just gives you the lines to put there.
Edit : oh, it's vxace, so it's all about scripts, I guess.

So I should add about 10 black tiles to all sides on every map ?

No. I wasn't really giving advice, just noting that I have a weird fixation on the player sprite always being centered. It's not really a better or worse thing, just my anal preference.

Can I use these for RPG Maker VX Ace ? They seem to be made for XP, but when I put them into VX Ace, they work just fine. One problem is, many tiles are missing for some reasons.

I am trying to rebuild the Town with bigger buildings. I 'm having a hard time doing that due to the lack of modern building tiles (Yes, I already look through all the topics about modern tilesets on the Internet).

XP tilesets are 8 tiles wide by as many tiles tall as you want. VX Ace tilesets are 16 tiles wide by 16 tiles tall. So converting tilesets from XP to VX Ace is easy. First double the image width - by adding white space to the right, not by stretching the image. Then select everything from row 17 downward and move it up and to the right into the white space you added. If the second row is still more than 16 tiles tall, cut the rest and paste them in a new image.

MS Paint will strip transparencies, so Gimp or Photoshop is recommended. However, most XP tilesets don't have transparencies for anything but the background and shadows anyway, and RPG Maker's resource importer handles that, so MS Paint will probably be fine. If all you're comfortable with is MS Paint, try it out, I'd say there's a 90% chance it'll work.
Thanks :D I don't have GIMP or Photoshop and I don't know how to use them either.
I use Fireworks instead, that 's okay too, right ?

Anyway, it seems that the limit for each tileset is 512 X 512, so one tileset for XP has to be divided into 2 for VX Ace. That 's kinda nuisance... :P
The good thing about Ace is that it has the same mapping database as 2k3. In other words, you can create many different chipsets with different tiles by messing around with the tile selections. So you could have one dedicated to classrooms, one to playground and one to normal areas of a school.
There is something weird... Sometimes, I can't cut out parts of the tileset.

It 's like those tiles aren't there at all. I am not sure how to describe it technically. Anybody knows what this problem is ?

If you're having a problem like that, take a screenshot to maybe show what you mean, and start a topic in the help & requests forum about it since it's a technical problem rather than a design question.
OK, I 'll worry about that later.
Now, I have some trouble with creating a house.

My house seems way too small and bland, but if I try to make it bigger, the tree tiles will become smaller in contrast. A tree is supposed to be taller than a house, so that won't make any sense.

How could I make the house and the tree realistic in size ?

This is an example that I saw on the website above. Notice how big the house is, but there is no tree around.
I 've been kinda busy lately, so I could barely work on the game. :D

This is a small part of the town that I am working on.

Final design of the house.

Final design of the classroom.

Getting way better. I love the bags of garbage by the road. That purplish shadow under the trash cans is supposed to be semi-transparent - you have to click it to make it the shadow color when you import the tileset, I think. Or maybe shadows work differently in Ace?

Holy shit it's the year 20X6 and every desk has a computer now
Should I add more of those ground tiles around the houses ? :P

No, the amount of grass is perfect. Try to get rid of the dirt edges around the grass by using the shift key. You can shift-rightclick on an autotile you've placed on the map (such as the grass, which automatically puts dirt around the edges) to copy the exact piece of it that's there, and then shift-leftclick on another spot to paste it.

I tried it, but it looked unnatural so I left it alone.

The top part of the school 's entrance :D I didn't put the roof to create an illusion that the school is still bigger and higher. Anything wrong with the doors (Not sure if those tiles are supposed to be windows or...) ? And how shall I add walls around ?
