REQUEST FOR HELP TO MAKE A RPG , PROGRAMMER NEEDED TO PULL IT OFF

Hello, hopefully this does not seem disrespectful for my first post here but, more or less I would like to make a RPG. However, I don't really have the skills to make it myself.

To elaborate I have a very strong desire to make a cross over RPG. Yes, I know I am far from the first one and I know a lot of people here despise those who make unoriginal work but please hear me out.

As a fan of Final Fantasy and countless other games I always did want to see at least one crossover game. I don't know if anyone here knows about Super Robot Wars or the Namco VS Capcom crossover game but I wanted to make a crossover game that had a cross over story in the vein of that, more or less a cross over game that tried to at least be a little serious about it. I in fact wrote a fanfic about my ideal story, so I all ready have the story in mind. I know that a story does not translate in to a video game that well but, I am willing to figure out how to translate it decently.

The worlds I intended to include were Mario, Sonic, the Legend of Zelda, Metriod, Megaman X, and Final Fantasy, with a few others depending on how it goes from there.

I see it as having it that all the various game series's are simply apart of a massive universes and they would be united in a Star wars style government. It requires some imagination but I have it all worked out.

More or less its about a hero teaming up with the hero's of many worlds to confront a galactic threat, the plot is far more complex then just a hero team up though.

I did have the idea of having a mix of both unoriginal and original hero's and villains, if they can be pulled off at least in the game. For a crossover game, I seen that having a original hero and a original villain helps insure that the non original bad guys don't over shadow each other or something, so it makes sense from that angel.

So, I would like to try and make a RPG out of this if I can pull it off, but once more, I am, not really good at programing or coding, so I really could use help if anyone feels like trying this out. I all ready have the plans for how it could work, it could involve multiple planets that would lead to many world maps, in the vain of Star Ocean 4 or Mass Effect, or even Kingdom Hearts.

I seen some of the other fan RPG's like the Mario one, the Megaman X one and the many Final Fantasy fan RPGs, so I know that Sprite importing is possible.

So, does anyone sound interested? Despite it not begin a original project, I see creating a good crossover game, one that would likely never be released as a real game as a worthy project. So, hope its appealing enough for someone else here to be willing to give it a shot, thanks in advance.
So, anyone willing to help at all? I know this board is not keen on those who ask for help but, to be frank I know I won't be able to pull this off without help. I admit I am not a programmer, I never was good at math, I am more on the writing and idea side. I do have the story in mind, I wrote it as a fan fic of mine. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3455738/1/Tales-of-The-Cosmic-War-vol-1-A-Hero-s-Evolution

Yes, I know that writing a story is not the same as making a RPG and I also know that things would need to be changed to make it a game, I am just showing my idea for the RPG.

I have a lot of things to do, I don't really have the will to make a bunch of RPGS that I don't really have any passion for just so that people will approve enough to help me out on the game I really want to make.
Maybe its greedy but I really only have the drive to work on this idea of mine. Even if I due wrangle the time and computer power to pull this off by myself, if I could get it out in who knows when I know it would more or less be a broken mess due to my lack of skill and I much rather people in fact like the final product.

So, I know no one just has the spare time to work on a large project, I know quite well from my own situation but if a group of you guys that know how to do this right are willing to do a little part then I would be rather grateful, after all a project is a lot less harder to complete when a lot of people share the burden. So, is there anyone that is willing to try and help me out figure out how to make this idea of mine a reality?

The whole reason I want to do this is create a really epic fan RPG, a tribute to all the video games I was a fan of as a kid, more or less. I know I can't pull it off alone but after seeing some of the Fan RPG's out there I know it can be pulled off with enough effort and passion and skill mixed together so, if there is anyone else that thinks this is more then a insane idea I would be really grateful to hear back from you so we can see how to pull this off.
Ideas are cheap. It's finished, or even working products that are worth something.

Unless you are willing to invest quite a bit of time and effort, and make a very, very tangible contribution to your own game (and make what that contribution would be very clear, which it isn't in these posts), I doubt anyone will want to do much work on your game at all. If you have something to start with, some demo or something, to show when asking for contribution, you may (or may not) get people more interested in helping.
Sigh, I see your point, but as I said in the previous post, I just don't have the time or the skill to do this myself, all I can show is my story to show what its sort of based off of.

Well, seems I am screwed, back to the drawing board then.
Using engines such as RPG Maker VX Ace to make a game doesn't really take any skill. Doing a generic RPG is very easy to do, plus there are tons of tutorials out there to help you understand the basics of eventmaking, scripting, mapping and whatnot.
If you can spend time writing stories, you can take that time and spend it on game making instead.

I'd advise you to start with small game projects. Designers who begin with big, ambitious projects always give up when they realize they overestimated the amount of work, their time, motivation, quality of work, etc.
Sure you have an epic project in mind, we all do. But give yourself a chance by going through the "Easy Mode" before you take on more ambitious projects.
Oh, I know just how time consuming a project it would be, hence why I sleeked help in the first place.

Well, thanks for the advice, ill see what I can do. Sigh, at the very least in the meanwhile anyone know the best method to import pictures and backgrounds in to games, for enemy sprites, and backgrounds and that kind of thing?
Huh... I haven't seen this thread before. OK, I have some advice for you :P

- Read and watch the basic tutorials. You need to at least have some screenshots or specific ideas that represent your idea. A lot of people kept thinking about having an epic story for their game, but they never started working on it. :| We have seen a lot of people asking for help like you do, and we told them the same thing I am telling you now. Guess what ? They never came back. They 'd rather go back to playing Black Ops 2 or BattleField 3 instead of learning. XD

- Do whatever you want with the engine. No one could stop you from making your idea into reality. ;) It might not appeal to everyone, but those who don't like it won't bother you. I prefer fun crossover and fan games over the "Chosen knight - amnesia - magic - save kingdom - muwhahahahaha." This is just my taste, as I also like modern themed games more, especially school setting. :D

- I am intrigued to see what you do with the idea you told us. If you are going to make a project like that, be really careful what you do. People judge fan games and crossovers with higher standard than a normal game. :D

Click on the Database button, which looks like a paper on the Ace toolbar. There, you can put in any kind of graphics you like. :)

Sad, but true...
Actually... I have seen a lot of people like you, DarthZannacross. I even know one personally.
I doubt, that there are any people around here, who doesn't have any game idea, have the time, and skill, and wish to work to someone, * or with someone, who tells them exactly what they should make. Unless you pay them. Or show them some of your work...

I would suggest, to forget this idea. At least forget about a game this big. If you don't have the time, you either need money, or a smaller crossover rpg project.

(I may be wrong, and one day some guy will pop up, and accompany you, but chances are low, and you should take this into consideration, before you leave. )
Ah well I did post a link to my story to give a idea from that sense, but I do see what you mean.

Its like a catch 22, making a smaller game might be the smart thing to do, but in turn I am less motivated to work on it since its just a obstacle to get in the way of what I really want. But, to work on that idea by myself increases the chance that it would come out as a mess.

I knew from the start that asking anyone to commit a lot of time working on something for free is asking a lot. And of course there leads another catch twenty two, to pay would be rather hard since A, I don't have a job at the moment, and B, selling the intended game would mean I would be ripped to pieces by copyright lawyers.

I suppose I was crossing my fingers that asking on the main fan RPG site I would find a few diehards that liked the idea enough to help but ill admit that was more then a little hopeful.

Again, its just that , math and programming has been my bane all my life, I am much better at writing then mathematics.

I even tried to make a RPG before on this, though, it was on the old one for the Playstation and I was so lost that I did not really get anything done but wright a few names down. Guess I am smarter then I was 13 years ago though lol.

I suppose I should figure out what is a proper balance for a team working on a fan RPG. Anyone know how it worked out well in past fan games, like say that fan Mario rpg I seen on this site?

Thanks for the support and ideas guys and girls, I do want to see just what options there are to be had in this.
In addition, maybe it would help that I am serious in wanting to make this if I show how thought out the blueprints are, thus

Tales of the Cosmic Wars Episode One Fan RPG Thesis

Cast of fighters
Original Hero one= Ben Auro. Job Class Magical Swordsmen/ Enji Knight

Original Hero two Doug Fitter. Martial Artist

Original Hero three James Elrond. Job Class Mage/ Quincy Archer

Original Hero Four Lacus Raystar. Job class, holy swordsmen

original Hero five Ezan Kaiba. Job Class, Enji Samurai

Primarily Unoriginal hero's AKA hero's from other games that I would feel would be essential for a party: Cloud Strife, Mario, Yoshi, Sonic, Shadow, Kirby, Link, Samus, Megaman X, Zero.

Secondary unoriginal Hero's , AKA hero's that would be nice to have as party members, but if its not enough space could also fit as moves for the Primary Characters. = Luigi, Tails, Knuckles, Axl, maybe another Final Fantasy hero or heroine and a pair of hero's from the Tales of series.

Worlds in Game, each world would use its own world map, worlds would be selected like some sort of level select screen, choosing a planet would then descend player to a world map.

World one, Capital planet of the Lylat system Corneria, capital planet of the Lylat Kingdom.

Town one Capital City Neo Arcadia, would have five blocks, sort of like New York city. Also has the castle where the Lylat King, AKA the ruler of the univures resides.

Town two, Transford, hometown of the main hero Ben Auro, has Ben's house and a few other small places, like Shire Woods.

Town three, Enji Headquarters, AKA Hallowed Bastion, primary base of the Warriors of Light, the Enji.

World Two, the Mushroom Kingdom.

Town one Toad Town and Peach's castle, mostly based of Paper Mario design. Mario's Pad would be its own area.

Other locations would be Bowsers Castle, Star Shrine and Underground tunnels.

World three, Mobius, AKA Sonic's world

Locals are Station Square, which would include Twilight Park, Mystic Ruins, which would include Angel Island, Tails Workshop, Lost World Temple/ Egg man Base, and Zeon Garrison Zone, AKA enemy base.

World 4, Hyule.

Locals, Hyule Castle/ town, the Lost Woods, Hiya Lake Zora's Vally, Great Fairy Temple, Kakakrio Village, Death Mountain,

World 5. Popstar

Locals, Dreamland, Dedede Castle, Fountain of Dreams and temple of Dreams, the Halberg.

World 6 Sr388

Locals, Chozo caverns, Chozo Temple, Space Pirates warship, Phazon Mountain.

World 7, planet Cetra

Midgar ( Part of it at least, even if its just a section), Forgotten Capital/ Sithantos Cultist base. Centra Temple, Icicle Inn, Northern Crater,

Other Locals, Twilight Town Space Colony, Final level/ Nexus of the Dark Dimension.

Battle System, normal Final Fantasy battle system, Double and Triple team attacks would be nice to add if its possible, the same as some sort of Limit Break attacks, not sure if RPG makers support that kind of thing though. Gear would be normal weapon/ Armor/ accessory system, skill system from Final Fantasy 9 seemed like a ideal way to learn things in a unique way.

Lastly, I don't want to explain everything from my fic but to just explain a bit ill go over a few things.

Lylat Kingdom is the galactic constitutional Monarchy system that serves as the primary government for the universes, current leader is King Atem Lylat, yes, the one from Yu Gi Oh body and basic personalty wise.

Enji Knights, a galactic group of warriors composed of the best hero's from all over space. Current leader is Grand Master Myers, think of the Green Lantern Corps or the Jedi Knights.

Zeon Federation is opposing government, sort of like the Separatist from Star Wars, and well, the Principality of Zeon from the UC Gundam shows, leader is president Weil Zabi, altered version of Weil from Megaman Zero series.

They are one group of enemies but the primary enemy force is the Order of sithantos , a dark cult order that seeks to reform existence, by reviving the god of darkness. Leader is Xehamaru, fallen apprentice of Grand Master Myers, he revives villains such as Ganondorf, Sigma and others, and also recruits those like Bowser and Doctor Robotnik to build a powerful enough army to get the needed sacrifices he needs to realize his goals.

All right, that's the basic gist of what I had in mine. As said previously, I know things would need to be altered to make it work, this is just how I saw it in my head. I am not sure what's the limit of the most up to date RPG maker but I seen fan RPG's have more then one world map before so it seemed possible.

So, that's the thesis, not sure if it changes anyone's mind but I did want to show people I thought a lot about this.
Your idea, at first, sounded really interesting. :P However, I am kinda concerned about how you could put them to work. Look at that character list... How many of them will be playable ? How, and where would you get sprites for them ?

And those worlds and towns... It would take a really long time to map them. The story sounds good, I suppose. In the worst case scenario, you might have to work on this by yourself. You can always recruit testers and ask for mapping tips, though, so you aren't completely alone. :)

Anyone know how it worked out well in past fan games, like say that fan Mario rpg I seen on this site?

Most fan games are loved by the fanbase it caters to. I have played many of those Mega Man, Corpse Party, ect. fan games, and they are usually well done. ;) People who don't like them won't bother with them a lot.

My game is a fan game, and even though I do have support from many people, I did get a few weird comments from some others. Learn to ignore them if they are jerks and finish things to the end. :D
Ah, well, I image it would be a lot more scaled down from my fic but in essence.

Mario and Luigi would be imported from Mario Inside story

Sonic's cast would be imported from Sonic Battle

Link would be imported from either Link to the Past or The Four Swords game.
Samus would just be imported from Super Metriod, Kirby from Super Star Deluxe

X and Zero could be imported either from Megaman X PSN games, or if it could work, the new Project Xross Zone to get even better sprites. If you don't know what I mean, I mean this 3DS game, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tO_5esMq2kE
They are still 2D so, I think they could still be imported by at least one method or another.

Cloud well, previously it would have to be a fan sprite, but with that recent I phone game Final Fantasy all the Bravest, Cloud has a official sprite now, Sephiroth has a battle sprite to haha.

As I said before, the primary Borrowed list is the ones that I would like the most to be party members, mostly because they are my favorite video game hero's haha.

I seen theses fan games before, so I know the importing process exists, I watched a youtube video about it, I forget how it worked, I should find it though.

yes, the mapping is a very long process, and that's why I knew I would likely need help. I don't know, someone who was really good, in theory I was hoping someone could just work on the mapping. Like, the guy who made this game, http://rpgmaker.net/games/427/images/ he made three world maps work in a single RPG, I wonder if he is still around lol. Ah , glad your game is liked as well, thanks for the ideas Mr- Detective.
Oh, that guy is still around XD

But what engine are you going to use ? And I assume you were talking about sprites in battle. What about their sprites on the map ?

For mapping, like I said, you might have to do it on your own. But you can post a screenshot of the map and ask for feedback from people. :)
Well , I suppose I don't really know yet, what would be the best engine to work on such a project?

For on map well, a bunch of them have sprites one way or another all ready, for the others, if I would have to make new ones for my original cast, getting a few more would just be another extra push I suppose.
Bump, any help guys? Even if you don't want to help work on it, I still would be grateful if anyone has any tips from there own experiences on sprite importing and importing backgrounds and stuff.

If you work with RPG Maker 2000 or 2003, make sure your graphics are 256 color bitmaps (.bmp).
What I do (probably not the most efficient, lol), create something in a regular .png file. Save it as a .gif in Photoshop, with Local (selective) palette, None forced and no transparency. Then open the .gif in MS Paint, and there save it as a 256 color bitmap.
File should now be usable in RM2K(3).

If you use VXA, I think any .png file works just fine?

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Asking what engine to use is a good way to start a turf war. Just pick whatever looks prettiest to you for your first game, it's going to suck anyway because it's your first game. Almost everyone's first few games are practically unplayable, sad but true. (If you're super attached to this crossover game idea, you might want to save it for a year or two until you get better.)

If you can't figure out how to import stuff, I don't have much useful advice except RTFM. There's a pretty big Import Resources button in the program that I don't think is very hard to find. And if you don't want to use that, you can just stick the files in the right folders and bam you're done. If you're making your own resources, and trying to get them to work, usually it's just a matter of looking at the RTP resources and mirroring the way they're formatted, but if you have any specific questions feel free to ask. That's pretty good advice in general actually: specific questions will typically get answered while vague requests like your above post will typically get ignored. If you tell people exactly what you're trying that isn't working, they'll probably respond positively to your level of effort and tell you exactly what you're doing wrong. Don't get discouraged, making a bunch of topics every week full of noob questions isn't gonna bother anyone. RPG Revolution is a site that caters more towards novice users, so you might also check out their forums.

Pulling the sprites from the original games probably isn't gonna work so well. First of all, half those games aren't RPGs and don't even have up-facing or down-facing versions of the characters. And secondly, they're all different sizes and coloration styles and will be horribly mismatched. Maybe that's fine for a first project though.

If you want an alternative, this site has RPG Maker XP styled sprites for a billion or so different characters, including practically the entire cast of the Final Fantasy series. Though they're made for RPG Maker XP, you can use those sprites in RPG Maker VX Ace without any problem if you just put a $ symbol at the beginning of the image filenames.

And by editing these sprites or any other sprites in an image editor at 16x zoom or whatever you can make new characters - swap one character's hair with another's change the colors of clothes, add sunglasses, etc. Might be a nice first experience with pixel art, if you wanted to try it. GraphicsGale and Gimp are both free programs for image editing. Photoshop is also popular. Just don't use MS Paint, because it will strip your transparencies, reset your palette, rub sandpaper on your eyes, cut off your ponytail while you're asleep, put tobasco in your coffee, and email your entire porn directory to your mother.

This is dumb and crazy, just save it as a 256 color .png in Photoshop in the first place. "Indexed mode" is another word for 256 color, yo.

When I save as .png in Photoshop (CS5), the only option I see is interlaced or none, and both options show up as a black image in RM2K(3).

MS Paint works perfectly fine. I've been using it forever, and for most the pixel art I do.
Even the Sphere image editor, from the late '90s, is better than MS paint.
MS Paint is useable, but you have to also know how to use IrFanView.

I basically use MS Paint, because it has an easy background-free effect. That is, you can ask it to exclude the background color, and select a box, doing stuff like moving a character and his weapon into the same space. Or two characters hugging.

You then use IrFanView to restore the transparency, mitigate lost color (Floyd-Steinberg color reduction save as 256 bmp gives you virtually no lost color), etc.
