It's not very hard to get an old machine that runs an older OS. I have a 2000 machine and an XP machine in my closet. Plus dosbox and other possible emulators. There are many ways to keep playing 2k3.
At some point, yeah. RM95 could pretty much be considered dead even if there are a few people out there who still make games for it sometimes.

In another few years, I think VX/VX Ace will pretty much be the dominant maker in every way possible. The only reason I can see people going with 2000 or 2003 is simply because they're both (illegally) free and there are tons of existing resources for them.
Because of ease of use and also due to the new life it's been given by DynRPG, RM2k/3 will definitely live for a while longer. (that and I've got like 3-4 games I'm working on with it...)

Also, I dunno what Windows 8 you people are using, but RM2k/3 games work FINE for me in Windows 8. And no, I'm not even using Compatibility Settings, which pretty much lets ANY PROGRAM regardless of age work with the OS. :P

After upgrading to Windows 8, 2k/3 games just crash for me, even in compatibility mode. I know other people with the same problem, so it's only a matter of time before they're obsoleted into obscurity.
What kind of issues do you run into? I don't recall having issues running 2k3 games in Windows 8...

As soon as I try to run a 2k3 game, no window comes up and it gives me the process not responding error.
Isn't VX pretty much dead already since VXA came out and is basically the same engine with improvements?
rm2k3 is my baby, I must take care of it greatly.
I'm gonna keep using rm2k/2k3 simply because I don't have time to properly learn anything new. that and I like the resolution.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Those are shitty reasons. If those are your legit reasons, I'd rather you stop making games.

You know you can change the resolution on any of the legal engines, right?
When I try to learn a new engine I get discouraged. I keep thinking about how I would do it in 2k3 haha and I want to quit so I can go do it in 2k3. I'd rather makes friends with someone who knows a better engine and work on a colab, than to learn most new engines. A higher resolution would be nice though.
For shits in giggles I grabbed a Win8 ISO, threw it on a VM, and started playing Hero's Realm on it. I dunno what Sail and Friends are doing but I'd bet RM2k(3) has a future on the travesty known as Win8

e: Barring Win8RT for obvious reasons.

e2: Also the world map runs like shit on my VM and sounds are delayed. Rm2k3 on VMs is not recommended. Dunno how much proper hardware virtualization would help, I don't have vt-d, just vt-x.

DO YOU THINK RM2K/3 WILL EVER DIE OFF COMPLETELY?

Going back on topic for a second, all things EVENTUALLY must come to a end. So it's no surprise, one day, to see good ol' reliable Rm2k3 ride off into the sunset, leaving a legendary trail of great games behind in its wake. Being a long time supporter -- and still a user of Rm2k3 (even though I'm slowly getting into VX Ace and I think it's MILES ahead of 2k3 in most regards) -- I have noticed a sharp decline in 2k3 games as of late, but still feel that it's "not quite" ready to give up the ghost just yet, considering how many people still use it and are still making projects with it. I feel that it still has a few "good" years left in it before it hits the dirt. Eventually, it's gonna die -- it's gonna die hard. But, thanks to people like "Cherry" & PepsiOtaku" who have been hard at work giving us various patches & add-on's for us to work with, and with a shit-ton of resources and easy to handle "programming" for noobs (not to mention, for some people, *cough* *cough* it's free), Rm2k3 has been given a few extra years left for all of us to still enjoy it...even if Windows 8 has problems running it.

2k3 is definitely on its way out. But I like to think it still has a few good years left in it before we can all bury it out at sea. Besides, it's the games that count -- not the engine.

Oh, and...

LONG LIVE THE MUTHERFUKIN' KING!!!
I still use Windows 98 on my primary computer. I even saw a guy on another forum who got Windows 3.1 up and running for kicks. If that's an indication of anything, There will always be someone, somewhere, ready and able to use older software for fun.
No, it will never die. Just like all those Morrowind modders, it won't die unless some sort of apocalypse happens. (Like 12/21/12....well, not.)

MUDs are still alive and kicking. My MUD runs on a code library from 1993 - that's twice as old as RPG Maker 2003, in case you're bad at math - and still gets new players almost every week.

If you'd asked me ten years ago, I'd have said "Oh man, there's no way any MUD will still be around a decade from now. This one will be dead and dry by the end of the year. There are too many free graphical games now, especially with the huge library of RPG Maker 2000 games you can download, and RPG Maker 2003 coming out in a few months. Soon no one will even be willing to play MUDs any more, much less make them." But here we are in 2013.

So yeah. If you are making a new game, you should upgrade. But you won't because you're stubborn. And people will be annoyed with you, but at the same time, people will play your game if it's good.

well considering I spend time 30 min/week in game making (average, give or take. Sometimes I get free time and motivation to spend a whole day. Whooo!) you could say I've already stopped making them.

I used to make stuff on Game Maker and would be able to these days as well, but I find it too much of a hassle.

If it's true that I can change the resolution in VX, I'd be willing to switch to that. I sorta vanished from these scenes at the release of VX, so I'm not familiar with it. XP I didn't like.

OK, if you're not really familiar with what RMVX Ace can do, then I can totally understand not liking RMXP.

I didn't mean to sound so aggressive, but "I don't want to put in a couple days of effort to learn how to make my game work better" and "I prefer my game to look worse" didn't strike me as responses that came from someone who really cared about providing good games to the community. That probably wasn't what you actually meant though.
