Hi,I'm ShineDiamond...and I'm a new RPG Maker VX Ace user.

I got RPG Maker VX Ace a week or two ago, and I decided for my first adventure, I would create a fantastic Pokemon RPG.

So far, I have the first region of the map finished, most of the database filled in, and a basic idea of how I want the story to go--but my biggest problem has been tracking down sprites of the human Pokemon characters (eg. Ash, Misty, Brock, and Dawn) and editing them so they look like they came from a fantasy world a la classic Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Zelda.

I'm hoping to get help in realizing my first game, make new friends, and maybe reconnect with some old ones
Hiya

editing them so they look like they came from a fantasy world a la classic Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, or Zelda.

Do you mean editing them to look like they belong in a pkmn game? Or are you changing up the look a little?
Do you have any experience making/editing graphics?

Did you try The Spriters Resource? They seem to have a sea of pokegraphics.
I want to edit their costume so they look like they're in a fantasy world--I have a basic idea of what I want their costumes to look like, and I do have sprites of them, but have zero experience sprite editing
Ah, I could try a few and give pointers on my methods. Post them here or PM me if you want.
I'll PM you the links to the sprites I have and the pictures of what I want their fantasy forms to look like

Ah, I could try a few and give pointers on my methods.

"give everything a one-pixel black outline and a solid fill"

"avoid shading, anti-aliasing, and texture"

"upscale everything to 2x so nobody can forget that these are totally sprites, yep they're still sprites, I'm a spriter"
Welcome to RMN! Good luck with your game!
but no seriously don't listen to Link_2112, the most he can teach you is how to cut corners.

Despain's tutorials are a good overview of some spriting principles and techniques and they can get pretty indepth. they're the sort of thing that you can refer back to as you improve and pick up even more advice.

good luck! the learning curve seems pretty steep at first, but as with all kinds of art as long a you consistently do something and keep a critical eye you can only get better.

haha Whatever. Don't listen to mawk, he's just a troll.

That is a useful tutorial, though.
Thank you all for the welcome and for the help--as soon as I get a few more screens, I'll have a page ready for the game.

I am not sarcastic and I do not lie

I am not about to dump on Link_2112 in his own topic because he is still learning and that is fine

but I will not let him pass his habits onto other people or pretend tϕ be an expert

it's as simple as that

ShineDiamond, I will look forward to your game page! your first game might not be everything you planned it to be, but that's very important. as long as you're able to recognize your strengths and flaws, you continue to improve.

e: vvv put what I say in as negative a light as you please

it does not change the world
heh You won't let me? Ok boss.

I never said I was an expert, that is a lie. And this

I am not about to dump on Link_2112 in his own topic because he is still learning and that is fine

sounds sarcastic to me.

I simply offered to help someone with even less experience than me. Yes, I am still learning and no, you don't know my habits or skill level.

Moving on.
I knew since Day 1 my first game would not be pro caliber, and I will more than likely have some growing pains, but that's the reason I joined--to learn from others that have more experience than me, and as I get better, I can help others that are just beginning
that's a good perspective to have, yeah. a lot of people come into game dev in general with the expectation that they'll be able to fire off a magnum opus on their first shot, which is why I like to make such a big dorky point of the fact that pretty much nobody gets it right on their first try whenever someone new comes in. the fact that you already know that means you've already got the first huge hurdle over with! congratulations.
