OK, SO WHAT THE HECK IS #SHUMP?

I don't want to dispel too many #shmup rumors because I think legends are a very interesting thing. The channel itself has been dead for a long time, even in earlier RMN years the name was a relic from GW. Everybody in there had a highly invested passion in game making that predated RMN by a long time. I'd be very careful to use the word "elitist" to describe any group of people, because it's usually the ones who are least refined who resort to slamming others with that kind of label. RMN in 2011 was like a microcosm of a political body with a growing divide between two ideals, and when both sides fail to reconcile, ugly things happen and ultimately one faction loses. That's kind of what happened.
We shouldn't fool ourselves into thinking that #shmup was the sole cause of all the ills on RMN. There were a lot of problems with various members, but the most vocal minority tends to be remembered when the dust settles, right? I can only hope this site has improved like people say! I stayed on for the longest time simply because I really trusted WIP's vision and direction for RMN. Alas, that vision was molded into other things (rip Propelo) and like Wagner and Nietzsche, ended with a bit of a falling out.
Anyway, for the most part everybody's moved on. I don't care if people want to continue to vilify me for mischief, but please just remember that the end result of all this was good for everybody.
p.s. i really enjoyed the description of me as falling into a descent of madness. i've finally achieved the protagonist talking hearsay that only the proudest rpg villains can hope to attain.
edit: local aristocrat ciel asked me to clairfy that the old shmup irc channel is dead but the community is still active. well, okay. bye for now.

And LockeZ, it is not that hard to code a beat-em up, shoot-em up in RM2K3. If I can do it, surely someone who is good at this can.

It'll be like old home week. tardis turned up after 2 years, magi and ciel after months and years before that. Lys has only been non-postimg for about a year.

it was interesting for me too in the sense that it was the most surreal thing i've ever read
i don't know if it's intentional revisionism or a delusional interpretation of reality but it's incredibly bizarre having spent time in a community i valued making posts asserting a genuine and heartfelt stance on video game/artistic issues and then i look back a couple years later and a few people around at the time who reacted with extreme disproportion to any mention of basic standards or creative principles or general logic are here painting this picture of digital terrorists who created some kind of internet holocaust that deeply traumatized hundreds of lives
and then there's other people i've never even heard of echoing them as if they just heard about it second hand and started to believe they too lived through this imagined cataclysm. and otherwise factually asserting things they have no way of really knowing about people they don't know or understand
it's fascinating. unbelievably puzzling but fascinating phenomena

I note that most people regard Magi as the villain of the story, but reading his post I almost wonder if it's better to not ask about #shmup simply for the probability that nobody can give a straight answer. After reading this thread, I still have no idea because so much information is conflicting, and yet, the people who are giving it were there, right?

A lot of things that went down happened behind the scenes due to the nature of moderators falling out. And that which occurred in front of others was a jumbled mess of 'battles' over the course of a period of time. It wasn't just one large fight and then split, but more a fight here, a fight there - all leading up to the ultimate battle (so to speak). So, yeah, it's a bit jumbled in peoples' memories.
Also, part of the whole 'baddie' image is probably because at the time Magi was seen as the instigator. There were a lot of ruffled feathers at the time and both sides were acting like idiots, flaming and trolling and whatnot. It came down to both being wrong and right with the real defining line being that which was drawn by WIP and those in charge saying "It stops here" and Magi and the rest leaving.
It's sad that it got that far, but honestly, it's water under the bridge. Their bans were lifted a long time ago so they're more than welcome to return at any time and a lot of us would welcome them with open arms. Personally, I miss quite a few of em. It'd be nice if we could go back to being one big happy family one day. :<

Yeah I was a lurker in the extreme in those days, frequented the site pretty much weekly but as I was never a maker, only a gamer I really didn't feel like I'd be welcome chipping in as my experience and expertise were on the other side of the spectrum. So I watched it all go down with a level of detachment that made some of the stuff that I did see odd in the extreme. Still IRL I've been party to worse meltdowns of people brandishing weapons not just words so it's all, as everything is, a matter of perspective and relativity.
I like this place now though, not that I didn't before, I just like it more now. Anyone who wants to come and play is welcome in my book.

#shmup could have been seen as the most visible, yet least impacting, issue the site had during my tenure. Also don't forget I hung out in #shmup on a consistent basis.

It was all in their delivery, really. Even if they had a point, their noses in the air made the message all too clear that they saw us as filthy, ignorant commoners who needed their guidance regardless of how it came across, when the least we wanted was democracy.
We are all the heroes of our own stories, regardless of how misinformed and misguided we are.
