IS USING THE DEFAULT RESOURCES IN A MAKER TABOO?

Honestly, I prefer RTP games because it becomes very easy to tell if it's worthwhile or not. Either it's RTP because the dev put lots of effort elsewhere (good!) or RTP because they didn't put any effort anywhere (bad!).

Custom stuff is sometimes nice and generally fresh, but it doesn't mean the game is going to be better.

I'm currently working on my first game, but because I have no talent in drawing or music or creating...well, anything resource-wise, I'm using the defaults that came with the game, barring a couple sheets I pulled from a free resource site for maps. Same for combat mechanics too. Looking at most games on this site it seems people don't use the default resources at all. I'm wondering how the community feels about them. Does the RPG Maker community look down on a game that uses the default resources? Or is it just because they had access to better resources and took advantage of it?

Nah, it's definitely not taboo. It's just that people would rather play something more original than RTP graphics, because RTP graphics are far too common and generic. Unless there is some creativity in the usage of RTP graphics or there are at least some custom graphics to jell with the RTP graphics, I wouldn't really bother with playing RTP games.

RTP games, however, are a good start when you are just starting to learn to create a game.

Romancing Walker, for instance, is a game that consists of quite a number of RTP graphics, but the game author cleverly modified them and added some custom graphics as well to make the game come alive and fun.

Another example is the Legion Saga series, which uses mostly RTP graphics but are fun in its own way.
Craze
why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

i would never use the rtp
I actually liked the RTP from the 2k to the XP.
but something on the VX rtp bothers me: Those blocky charsets
and how they influenced the Tileset.
I always Loved the tall Charsets because you can easily detect
Child-Charsets from grownups or teens.

I think that the RTP music is pretty good
even though I still prefer the old midi stuff
from the good old 2k/3.
