author=LibertyYeah, my post was a joke pointing out the sillyness of the statement that only one gender is "referred to by their genitalia". Pussy can be used as a joke and dick can be used as a real insult, your parents rules don't sum up every single person's experience. In my personal experience, some people I know call each other a pussy as a joke frequently but not dick - it differs from person to person.
^And that just proves a million points. :/Cunt, bitch, slut, pussy, whore... the worst insults are feminine in gender. What's a male gendered insult? Dick? Prick? Cock? Dickhead? Those are used as friendly pokes among friends. I can call my brother a dick in front of my very upright and strict mother and she won't bat an eyelid but dare to call him a bitch and I get the "Don't swear!" line. Because it's worse to be a woman than a man.
Besides, those two insults serve different purposed when used legitimately. Pussy is meant to call someone a coward, where dick is meant to call someone a jerk or rude. Both have negative gender stereotypes.
Summing up that people using "pussy" as an insult means they think:
author=Libertyis a gigantic leap to a conclusion.
it's worse to be a woman than a man.

author=kentonaauthor=TehGuyI tried, but quit after my eyes rolled so far back I could see the back of my skull. He makes some pretty broad assumptions here for the basis of whatever point he is trying to make and I can only imagine that the conclusion he draws will be flawed. So I didn't bother past the 5th paragraph.

I read through the whole thing and, while he makes it apparent that he sees both sides, falls back on the whole "I can't trust these lying psychotic broads with their SJWs coming to push their agenda".

Why don't we cut the whole thing out, like we're trying to do with calling everything we don't like "gay"?
author=CorfaisusI can certainly support that.author=EdgeOfChaosWhy don't we cut the whole thing out, like we're trying to do with calling everything we don't like "gay"?author=LibertyYeah, my post was a joke pointing out the sillyness of the statement that only one gender is "referred to by their genitalia". My point wasn't to support these insults, but rather to point out the hypocrisy in those statements because the argument goes like this:
- Calling someone by female genitalia as an insult likens them to a female, so this means society believes being a woman is bad.
- Calling someone by male genitalia as an insult is always a joke. Being a woman is still bad, being a man is totally awesome to society.
Yeah, that's not a double standard at all...
To your original point about your parents and the insults: it's pretty easy to tell when someone is joking or actually mad based on inflection of voice/mood/context. Maybe it's one of these or something like it instead "oh must be sexism, society hates women".
(edit)
author=TehGuytl;dr and rambling, can you give a summary?

Dick is used jokingly. Pussy is a very negative thing to be called. No one cares about being called a dick. They laugh it off. Being called a pussy will get your ass beat.
It is worse to be called a pussy, bitch, whore, slut, etc than to be called a dick.

Because another man dared him to and called him a pussy!
Most people that I've spent any deal of time with don't give a fuck what you call them. Nowadays, in my own experience, it seems that most "general level" insults get brushed off as a joke. You'd really have to call someone out as a person for what they do or how they act to get a rise. I was going to keep silent and leave the thread (since I think it's pretty well run its course) but hey.
I think it's unfair to generalize against men if you're trying to promote equal rights. It just hurts your case in the long run, which is a problem that people on Twitter run into a lot in my experience. It's the same as being a male proponent of equal rights and generalizing against women or feminists.

"Pussy" in this context is short for Pusillanimous

author=LibertyOnce again, you're speaking from your experience and generalizing it to every single person who uses those insults. I also have experience - as I said, I hear people who I know call each other pussies as a joke (note: no ass beating) and don't hear them use dick. Me and my best friend have used dick to describe people we hate before (though I rarely use it anymore), but I can accept that it goes both ways depending on who is using the insult.

Not everyone shares your experience of how these insults are used. These are a lot of statements of fact you're making with nothing but anecdotal evidence to back them up.
@kentona, lol, I did not know that. o.0.

For better or for worse, here's this.

Once again, you're speaking from your experience and generalizing it to every single person who uses those insults.
What do you base this assumption off of?
Go look at any random porn website.
Look at the thumbnails. Almost every single one has a woman on it.
The ratio of women-to-men that are the prominent content of porn is a dead giveaway of how men have an edge on things.
If you want to go a step further - you'll notice that nearly all porn videos/artwork/content will be marketed toward men. All the popular stuff anyway, discounting obscure hole-in-the-wall websites. But I'm referring to stuff that's popular and in the public eye.
Women do not have porn marketed to them. If they do, its a very very small amount. They just have to make due with man-marketed porn. I mean shit, I've spoken with some dudes that say no woman watches porn at all.
That is a vicious injustice. Until the day when women can freely watch porn with the same comfort and freedom as men; social inequality between the two genders will continue to exist.
I have a dream.
EDIT: I mean shit, seriously. The one thing that prevents men from understanding why women are indeed marginalized is that there's a great deal that don't understand or refuse to acknowledge false equivalency. And if there was ever an example of that, there it is. And if that doesn't prove the F.E true, I don't know what will.
And that has literally nothing to do with pussy vs. dick as an insult. In fact i more or less agree with you there. I agreed with most things that Liberty posted in her main post, but the generalization via these insults set off my bullshit detector, as did one or two other things.
Okay, I thought this was just a simple discussion. Liberty isn't an academician. She's not writing for a symposium. She can give "anecdotal" evidence if she damned well wants.
Moderators, I think this thread is going to that place we didn't want to. I think it's time to lock it.

See, that's why you don't get it.
author=pianotmWell trying to take your experiences and say "this is the way the world works because this is how it was for me" is going to be inaccurate. Sure she CAN, there's nothing stopping her, but if she means to be persuasive, anecdotal evidence is not proof.

My problem isn't with anecdotal evidence. I don't give a crap if she wants to use examples from her life, that's perfectly fine. I just don't want someone to say that they believe in equal rights and immediately start throwing out unfair generalizations of men.
She's not a scientist. She doesn't have to be accurate. She's a human with a personal experience. You're essentially saying that personal experienced should be banned from this debate. This whole thing is about personal experience and when they express their personal experience, what happens? They get their personal information put on the internet. They get threatened with murder and rape IN THAT ORDER. Women are being publicly attacked and when they complain about it, everybody shouts at them, "That's not what GamersGate is about!" as if they were trying to deflect the issue being used as the excuse to attack women.
And I really think it's time to lock this thread before it goes any farther.

author=PizzaAnecdotal evidence is problematic if it's your only evidence because everyone's experience of life differs. If everyone depended on anecdotal evidence to make conclusions, we would all have trouble disagreeing on anything. I've never shopped for halloween costumes and seen the so called "sexy" ones, but I can understand that liberty is right when she talks about it. If I was using anecdotal evidence, I would say "But I never shopped for one, therefore they don't exist".author=pianotmMy problem isn't with anecdotal evidence. That's not to say it can never ever be used. However, it can't be used to defend generalizations of others. It makes no sense to say "This is how it was for me, so this is how it is for other people"
author=pianotm"Lock the thread, someone disagrees!"

Also read above. It's not that it should be banned, it's that she uses it invalidly to draw conclusions. Also I do not support gamergate as I've stated before and am not harassing or threatening.
