HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT ONLY ONE GENDER AS PLAYABLE CHARACTERS

Posts

It comes down to representation and it's very important. If all a kid ever sees is white boys being the hero then they begin to think that's all a hero can be. And if a black girl sees the same characterisation of black women in everything that has a black woman, that's all she thinks a black woman can be.

It's important to vary and create characters that people can relate to personally. Otherwise all you're doing is stereotyping and while that can be legitimate in some cases, outside of those it's lazy, pathetic and needs to stop.

The issue is that when a woman or other race is used in media very often there are a set amount of things they are shown to be able to be instead of the huge variety of things they really can be.

Back on the main topic, though - I make a lot women in my own games. Even in games where the main character is male, I like to have strong, capable women around to balance out the testosterone a bit.

Often I prefer to show partners (non romantic) as both genders, but in the case of a story being told, usually it'll be that of a woman's.

That said, in the case that a story isn't the main aspect of the game then I like to allow the choosing of your own gender so that people can step into the shoes of the character they're playing.
yeah, from my perspective gender selection isn't the sort of thing that necessitates a gameplay change of some sort. it's up there with facial customization -- something that gives the player more options to represent themselves (or someone else) in the game. dividing content between genders can feel a bit disappointing for players who like to experience as much of a game as they can, and doing so has the potential for some unfortunate implications besides, depending where you draw those lines.

this is so important! the effects of strong representation can't be understated -- things like the Scully Effect, for instance, are amazing to read about.
Mass Effect did it well enough. Allow any sexuality - it shouldn't be an issue.
I'd love to see a game staring an all genderfluid cast.
same. I'm sure I could find a couple, if I cast around!

So anyway I like allowing people to choose their gender, or have equal number of female or male specific classes, because why not? Also, I like making this decision somewhat relevant to gameplay (because having the player make a decision that doesnt affect the gameplay feels ...hollow? idk), by including gender-specific weapons or special areas that only a male-only or female-only party can enter or something.

Well, in games where the player is trying to role-play as their character - more of a Western RPG or MMO thing - having the choice to create the kind of character you want does affect gameplay; not in the static numbers kind of way, but in the way that it might help you grow more attached to your virtual self, either because you made them more like you in real life, or more like the way you envision yourself, or just visually made them in a way you think is really cool. Like, I actively spent a lot of time collecting cool colors and clothes for my character in Guild Wars 2 so that when I crush somebody with her it looks totally awesome. It doesn't affect the gameplay at all and yet I got really into it, y'know?

Anyway, if the game doesn't particularly require a specific character, giving the player a choice is a great option. In JRPGs where you control a bunch of preset, prewritten characters, it can be a little more unwieldy to do that, but a diverse cast is great.

As for all-male and all-female casts... I would love to see all-female casts in things with some decent writing, character building, character relationships... there's not a lot of them, especially in big titles. I also wouldn't mind seeing some all-male casts with some thought put into it and characters that are actual, you know, people. There's a lot more all-male casts nowadays and I understand why people are sick of 'em. Meanwhile I'm just sitting around wondering when people are going to write a game about humans instead of meme machines or whatever.

(This is more a criticism of big money games. There are indie games that copy those faults too, of course, but at least I can point at a few dozen indie games, including ones on this site, that try something different, which is more than you can say about the majority of AAA stuff).
honestly, weird as it is to say, the way FF15 is handling its cast feels a bit fresh in its own way. it's too early to say one way or the other, but I really like the sense of camaraderie that these early materials seem to have -- it's an atmosphere of open, light-hearted friendship that you don't see much of.

the lack of women is still hella conspicuous, though. the road trip aesthetic isn't something that absolutely requires a cast entirely made up of fashion dads. (though there are some rumbles that that might not be the entire cast after all! wait and see, I suppose.)
Isn't that Stella girl part of the cast? Also this thread reminded me that there's a Sailor Moon RPG for the super nintendo
which obviously has an all-female cast

but then I got nauseous by remembering how awful that game was and tried to distract me with something a little less atrocious like bubsy 3D

I wouldn't mind a Suikoden where the Tenkai was female for once. (I mean, sure, they've looked girlier over the years but they've not actually been female.) In a world where strong women abound it'd be nice to see Konami actually buckle up and say "Hey, we've had all these really strong women through all the series... why not make the Tenkai one for once?"

Of course, first they'd have to actually make a Suikoden VI...

I liked the idea between FF15's story... maybe it's because four dudes on a road trip actually seems like a realistic thing that people do? I'm sure it'll expand into "save the world" at some point, but that trailer at least makes them seem kinda human. I have more faith in a Final Fantasy game with all dudes than I do in, like, Gears of War. Oof. Maybe it'll be like a flipped FFX-2?

(Although I wonder why literally everything they're wearing and the car they're driving is 100% jet black)

You know, I think of Tales of and Touhou lining Gamestop's walls. It think of what Final Fantasy has done to respect women in game since VIII and how FFX-2 totally rocked girl-power and I see an increase in girls in games. Some are overly sexualized. Some are not. Most, it looks like the developer didn't have a clue what to do, but that's probably more descriptive of the games in question overall. Then I actually interact with gamers and see how far we have to go.

You know I really want to tell you, I totally agree with Mawk in this thread, word for word.
FFX-2... I don't get why people hate that game. Well, okay, I do get why some did - because they had expectations about what a FF title should be and when they didn't have to save the world from a big bad they pitched a fit.

Frankly, I prefer X-2 to X, not only for the cast but also for the whole feel of it - light-hearted fix the world trip. It was very different (and the battles were awesome) with some fanservice (I still have a poster on my wall of dem lads~<3) but it was quite different to find empowered ladies in a game who just talked about fixing the world and being all friends and fuck I love that game.

FFX-2 is the kind of game I can appreciate now and the kind of game I would've loved as a kid if I didn't know I would be torn a new one for even suggesting it might be good
Final Fantasy X-2 absolutely rocks
It's ridiculously bloody awesome :ooooo
I won't say it's better than FFX, it's another thing altogether. It simply can't be compared. FFX-2 is a thing by itself, completely in its own subgenre, alone -- a place I think no other game has tread, not even today. Even if it had a pretty horribly shitty implementation at parts (for instance, some dungeons that looked worse than RPG Maker 3 dungeons) the game, its plot and gameplay were absolutely amazing. It's a game like no one other. :o

And @Emmych I'm all for it! /m/

by the way kinda unrelated but I love Flea.
the biggest thing X-2 had going against it was the poor budget forcing so much asset reuse and padding. everything else about it was pretty solid, and it's one of the best uses of the ATB I've seen.
