It's that time of the year - please, wake me up in January!

What's your view?
My family get-togethers have always been rather tense. Everybody used to get together at my grandmother's place; if you play my game Postcards, you'll probably get the idea of what that would entail. She's passed on now, and my mom's house is too messy to accommodate visitors, so for the past few years I've been having a sedate and chill Christmas at home.

And yknow, now that I'm an adult and I can have my own Christmas in my own house with my partner and I cooking a meal together, I feel pretty good about it. That said, we're spending this Christmas with my partner's family, but I can vibe with that!

I'm not religious, and I don't dig commercialism and/or vapid consumerism, but I think rituals have their place. When you can set a day that is an excuse to eat a bunch of fancy food and do something nice for your loved ones, I think that's cool.

Not even a stat holiday in Taiwan. But since I teach English in a cram school they do something for it. Interestingly enough they will tell the story of Santa and the story of Jesus in the English schools. And no one ever complains about it or screams political correctness.
I love me some Christmas. I love shopping for random stuff. I love the yearly Lord of the Rings-related movie. I love the Steam Christmas sales (and the other game buying sites that try to top them).

I also dig the couple of days off. (this Christmas is especially good. Christmas is on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday are off. And I got my work list so I even have Saturday and sunday off so it's a super-weekend) And then there's all the candies and chocolates. And the food.

And the advent calendar (though I only have one this year. A Star Wars chocolate one)

I mean. I don't even mind the snow if it happens around Christmas.

So yeah. Christmas is pretty awesome and the best time of the year. Except for the cold. But that's a good reason to stay indoors and play boardgames and/or computer games.
Aw yeah that's the best thing. My office closes at 12pm on the 24th and doesn't open again until Jan 2nd.
I don't mind Christmas at all, but I'm incredibly stressed about it this year since I'm extremely low on money since I moved over the summer and am literally just squeaking by in my new place. I can't afford Christmas this year, but am somehow managing to anyway.
Presents are the big hassle for me. I don't like buying them for people, and I don't like receiving them either. I hate pretending to like a gift, like when my brother gave me a $50 gift certificate for Walmart (I've been boycotting Walmart since forever).

But get-togethers and food? There aren't enough reasons to have them. Christmas is as good as any.
I don't really like Christmas. Can't even turn on a television or radio without the same songs drilling a hole into my head for a month. Though I've noticed that 'month' getting longer. Considering Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays I consider worth celebrating, this... disappoints me.

I can't afford to buy gifts and receiving one usually makes me feel guilty. Though last year I did ask for a present for the first time in fourteen years or so; I asked for socks. Living in Alaska with an old furnace makes the guilt a little easier to live with.

Christmas was something that mattered more to me as a kid than it does now, but it's also something I look forward to doing a few years down the road when I (hopefully) have a kid or two.

Being in college, I get about 5 weeks off for the winter between semesters, which is timed to accommodate Christmas & New Year's. On the downside, I work crazy shifts including overnight ones in the weeks leading up to Christmas and you can only hear so many renditions of the same Christmas song in a twelve hour period before you start to go insane. I worked overnight with a half dozen other people on Thanksgiving to decorate the store for Christmas, and that was an adventure.

As for gifts, I've really grown out of receiving them in the past several years, and when my parents ask me to make a list, it's a struggle. I end up asking for clothes and things I need as opposed to things I want. And I've never liked giving gifts, since you need to worry about how the recipient will react, and whether or not you're giving them as much as they're giving you and if you can even afford to do so.

Amen to that! I don't love Christmas itself, but I enjoy all the positivity it brings out in my friends and family. I know it turns some people into understandably stressed out monsters, but I've been lucky enough to be surrounded by simpletons who don't stress cause no one expects much from anyone XD I spend Christmas Eve and day with my family, then Christmas night and sometimes the night after me, my bf and my brother hang out with our close friends and exchange presents. I'm not a big present person but we all give each other presents we know the other person will like, many times the presents being either homemade or modified for specific interests (Like this year my friend's making and hardening pepacura models and I'm painting them. My bro's getting a Megaman Viking Helm lol my bf's getting a big Eva 1 head wall mount, our friends getting a Batman symbol wall mouted light, and another friend's getting a Green Lantern Mask XD and I'm getting a Grievous head ornament :D)) Good times, good spirits, good foods, love it :)
I'm no fan of Christmas, either. I'm as unreligious as they come, I hate shopping for gifts and I hate receiving them, too. Nobody does anything nice for me any other day of the year; why the fuck should they feel obligated to do it now?

But most of all, I hate seeing my family. My mom's family mostly consists of farmers. The majority of them don't even know how to turn a computer on and everybody is either much older or much younger than me. So I have nobody to talk to and I basically don't exist for those few hours.

And then there's my dad's family... Ugh. Nobody likes anybody. Everybody is overly critical. My aunt is always going on about how you don't need to know what happened during the "Pearl Harbor War" because stuff like that isn't important... One really needs to focus on finding fair trade products and free range organic chicken eggs and making sure that you keep a cup of water under your bed at night to collect evil spirits (and flush it down the toilet each morning). And then there's grandma... Oh man. Instead of just handing out gifts, she always has to turn it into a very, very stupid game. Last year, you had to roll dice. And if you got a seven, you got to go up and pick a present from grandma's pile. If you didn't get a seven then you had to pass the dice on to the next person and hope that you eventually got a seven........... :| After about half an hour, everyone had a box, and then we all had to watch as all the young crickets opened their present. And of course, every box was empty, save for a Grandma Gift Certificate, which you had to turn in to Grandma as proof that you won the game. And then you'd get your envelope with $10 in it. Fuck my life. Thankfully, because most everyone hates each other, these gatherings are mercifully short.

Also, I work at a grocery store and it's fucking busy this time of year. People are rude, and think I can conjure everything they need out of thin air. (I always laugh at the idiots who buy a giant frozen turkey the day before Thanksgiving. Yeah, it'll thaw in 12 hours. Sure.) I know it's awful, but when people ask me to find something for them in the back, I just go back there, mess around on my phone for a few minutes, and then come back and tell them that "No, we don't have any more cans of peas."

Yeah, wake me up in January.

Probably the main thing I don't like about Christmas for me is that what's left of my gf*'s family is in Colorado and my family is here in New York. That means I either have to spend Christmas apart from my girlfriend and in turn deal with the stress of my family alone without her support which makes everything harder, OR to go with her and not see my family on Christmas which seems very wrong so I never, ever do it. So yeah basically Christmas is always the one time a year I don't get to be with the person I love.

Other things about Christmas are just annoying. My dad has always been a really intense gifter even though he's really poor, and when I was a kid it was unmitigated awesome, I was definitely living beyond my below-the-poverty-line means in terms of videogames and stuff. But now it mainly makes me feel guilty, and competitive, as I've got to go tit-for-tat with him and my brother in an arms race of extravagant and brilliant gifts. (Note, I mean what poor people would consider extravagant since we're poor people, so probably a dollar amount that rich people would consider normal, but spread out across many, many more individual gifts.) My dad is an annoying person to shop for, too.

* We have been together continuously since 2006 so "girlfriend" doesn't really adequately describe the level of attachment/commitment but it's what I've got.
Why do some of you mention religion? Christmas is about an old guy with a beard and consumerism :P

It's more of a mindless tradition in my family. Most of us see each other only 2-3 times a year so it's a good opportunity to see how everyone is doing. We usually offer things like handmade products, sweets, CDs and most couples give clothes to each other... nothing super fancy or expensive like smartphones and laptops. It's more about enjoying time and a good meal together.

Roll a seven? Does your Grandma get out a d8 from her Dungeons and Dragons set or something?

Grandma gift certificate, though! I love that so much! It's almost too perfect.

My farmer grandma once sent me a card with a $1 bill in it, and a pebble from her yard. The card said "I found this rock and it reminded me of you."

I'm guessing 2d6, where grandma may have known that a 7 is the most likely result on 2d6. (see also: craps)

Yup, that's about what it has turned into. I'd like to imagine Christmas without all the "Buy the right gifts at the right price!" and "Yo, donate to this cause cause it's Christmas!" even though if you wanted to help with the cause you could of donated to it on one of the eleven other months of the year.*
Just you, your loved ones, a fireplace, TV/Movie and talk. That's all I think it should be.
Or, to actually mention the religious part, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, if you're into that.
Ahahahahahahahahahaha that's Easter hahahahahahaha.
Ow.

But I guess traditions always seem to be bent/corrupted.

* might as well be 10, thanksgiving might as well not be a holiday with people talking about Christmas a month earlier. It's like all the Halloween stuff in the first week of September!

It's sort of the common misconception that christmas has anything to do with Christianity, when it actually has its roots in European paganism and stuff like that.

I like the gifts and the opportunity for family get-togethers it brings, but that's about all I truly love about christmas.
I'm with you seiromem.

I actually have Santa tied up in my basement.
I love it for the fact that it's the one month of the year that I'm usually fully at peace with myself and I can spend time with my family and loved ones and exchange gifts.

S'all there is to it. I could do without the commercialism and everyone hyping it up two months before it actually happens though lol
