If you're looking for a somewhat short (3-7 hours) RPG with a serious story and potentially very challenging combat, you might enjoy Illusions of Loyalty:

If you're looking for a game with a really "out-there" bizarre story that starts off silly and lighthearted but eventually gets dead serious, you might enjoy The End. Although I have to warn you, combat in that game is in a rather rough state and isn't as tightly balanced as Illusions of Loyalty. The End is a bit on the easy can-spam-strong-stuff-a-bit-too-easily-win side.

I would also recommend any of the World of Arum games by Indrah and Fomar0153 (Dead moon night, Grumpy Knight, In Search of Immotality, The Sunken Spire. In that order). They're usually pretty well designed, and have fun stories and characters.
