Welcome to Mischief Managed!

THE CONTEST ::..
This was a Playlist creation event. Contestants were to make a good, creative play list of at least 4 games and post a link to that list in this topic. I have checked them out, select the top 10 (in my opinion) and put them in a poll.

We will now vote for the best one, and the winner will get a gifted copy of Mischief (worth $25) a cool art program, courtesy of RMN (if you already own it and you win, I wil gift you a $25 Steam game in lieu). Deadline for voting is Wednesday, April 1, 2015 @ noon Saskatchewan time (-6 UTC)

THE FINALISTS ::..
Cap_H "No Love For Pictures: Text based gams"
Pizza "Golden Age of Plagiarism: The games that use rips like no other. Old school RM!"
kory_toombs "Zelda Masters: Zelda Fan Games"
kentona "Yume Scary: Those ethereal mindfuck games that seem so popular nowadays"
TungerManU "Black and White: Games with (mostly) black and white graphics."
CashmereCat "I'm a puzzler, not a fighter: Games that focus on puzzles or puzzle-like gameplay, but feature little to no combat"
CashmereCat "Post-Battle Heal:Games that heal you after you win/lose/escape combat"
Cap_H "Surf Rock: List of games you should consume while taking a wave."
Craze "All Aboard the SS Drama"
Zugzwang "Blown your head: Highlights with original art. Basic package of influences from various countries."

I voted for Pizza. He has some pretty interesting picks on the list (It's good source of inspiration). And It has no Middens.
I voted for craze even though I have mixed feelings about which ones "count"

Yeah, some note for those of us less-versed in RMN's history as to where the drama is for given games would've been helpful. I get picks like Legendary Legend, Space Funeral or Forever's End (18 reviews, most negative one with 112 posts... just wow), but I'm not sure what made Legionwood qualify. Was it something on one of its 11 pages of posts underneath?

i find it hilarious that my drama one got picked and not the one where i point out cool games in the engine everybody thinks i hate

I am so glad RMN isn't like that anymore. Good lord. Someone writes a bad review and every comment is "lol ur gams are bad so shut the fuck up" and "u kno nothing of quality" and every second comment is a shmup member being a fucking shmup member.

Actually to be honest I'm still afraid of that happening, which is largely why I didn't give Oneshot a bad review.
Have you seen my Middens review from 2 months ago? Only 16 posts, but that was some pretty serious shit (kentona and Liberty can both testify.) So yeah, I can totally understand, even though I'm still sad to hear you didn't like Oneshot. :(

I felt that after harping on you about its content that I felt obliged to include it.

Oh, I remember that review. Some truly vile stuff was said, but to be honest I don't really blame the guy- he's apparently pretty hard into psychedelic drugs, so he's no doubt very spiritually and personally connected to his art. I think his reaction was because it was judged as a game when he really intended it as a purely artistic piece.
Yeah, I actually found myself kind of agreeing with the Middens guy even though his rhetoric was childish. Judging something without understanding the context of the medium in most instances is derided or at best ignored, but on rmn anyone can submit a review, and that often means getting reviews from very young players (not saying this was the case here, but it's an example) who might not understand everything that's really going on in a game. And, even knowing that, it doesn't change the fact that getting a low score on something you put a lot of thought and heart into really hurts. I know that whole bit reeked of drama, but the core of that discussion was one worth having.

I guess that explains a lot. Believe or not, however, I actually view all games as artistic pieces, which is part of the reason why I tend to give lower scores on here than most. It's just that to me, gameplay in a game is like cinematography in a film, i.e. an integral part of an experience regardless of how artistic it intends to be. And of course, I mostly praised the gameplay; it was the storyline I had greatest issues with.

EDIT: @ Housekeeping: Didn't see your post when I first wrote it, but I guess same points apply. And I agree that the discussion overall was worth having; I just wish, like everyone else, that it could've been conducted with more grace (which I suppose I must take some of the blame for).

Regardless, I think it's pitiful to criticize someone for not being able to judge games just because they haven't created them. Sure, you could've created a game and thus know somewhat better about what makes a great game from a developer's perspective, but that doesn't mean that non-developers can't judge a work of art just as lucidly. In this case, I think NTC3 gave a valid critique, using detailed explanations of various facets of the game to back it up. It sure was a lot more informed an opinion than many others on this site.
I think I’ll vote for Craze. With a name like “All Aboard The SS Drama” – how can I not?
