THE UNPOPULAR OPINION THREAD

Most population projections in the future have nations with a lower total fertility rate. World population is something to think about, but it's not a linear projection into critical mass, either. People are having less children.

this is important to note. birth rates are fairly low (but still sustainable) in first-world countries and higher in third-world countries, and tend to drop as a country grows more prosperous and access to birth control and other healthcare improves. 'overpopulation' is kind of a weird thing in general, because a lot of the time it's really just someone's code for 'there are middle-eastern people in the UK now and I'm a frightened racist'.

the earth cannot currently sustain this many people at a high standard of living under the current system, where vast amounts of global resources are wasted or misappropriated for the prosperity of a limited few, but if we adopted a global economy that didn't have such a high degree of waste built into it... well, who knows?

e: I will say, though, that 'we have little choice' isn't necessarily proof that we'll take steps to improve things. I have no doubt that many people would gladly run the world into the ground for the sake of enough gain to safely cash out and avoid the consequences.

Actually educated people are having less children. There is a direct correlation between the education of girls/women and a lower birth rate.
oh, that's my mistake as well! thanks.
And we come back to my argument for more/better sexual education~ ^.^

Do it. For the WORLD!!! (Or at least, for the sake of humanity. The world will be just fine without us.)

Also, I know it's a long-ass read but it's really interesting and has to do with space and aliens and IS REALLY INTERESTING GUYS!

the aliens are all waiting to throw us a surprise party but finding a good schedule for multiple interstellar civilizations has mired it at the planning stage

No problem at all. You are right that better health care is a factor and makes a huge difference in the long term, but short term it can actually lead to a population explosion. With access to better health facilities infant mortality rates plummet, but without education, especially of women in regard to contraception and health, the old model still applies of producing 8 children in quick succession in the hopes that 2 or 3 of them will make it to adulthood. Now you're getting survival rates in the 70-75% range and suddenly 5 or 6 of those children survive and population sky-rockets.

It's a very complex issue with so many factors involved, but education is the key.

Oh and just in case you discuss this sort of thing on other forums where people can be tetchy, the terms First and Third world aren't really used any more. It's Industrial, Less Developed and Least Developed. The term 'Third World' was considered pejorative, though it does ruin the joke about having First World problem, Industrial World problems doesn't have the same ring to it.
I've heard varying opinions on that, honestly -- First World and Third World are outdated and rooted in colonialist thought, but I've also heard people rightly point out that framing these countries as 'developing' or something along those lines can unfairly correlate progress and development with a country's resemblance to Western capitalism. they went on to describe First World and Third World as representing, instead, a country's relationship to capital and exploitation, where First World countries are the exploiters and Third World the exploited.

this isn't anything I'm anything close to an expert on, though, so I'll probably err on the side of caution here and take up those new terms.
More like remnants of the Cold War (the second world referred to the Soviet Union and other Communist states), but that's more or less accurate. Reality tends not fit very well in the boxes we try to shove it in.

I've heard that argument too, and it's a fair one. Though becoming less so over time, thankfully. I think it got toned down a little by one of the UN councils/agencies creating purely mathematical measurement in regard to the classification. Something along the lines of % of GDP spent on infrastructure, education, health etc. Not something like how many TV's are in the average home. Though don't quote me on the actual content of the calculation. It is, as all things like this are, convoluted and complex.

I just find when I use the newer terms on other forums I get a loss less flak over it, and I'm always happy to spare someone else from having to deal with idiots if I can.

This chart always makes me laugh: I don't know what the UAE are doing but they're ballin' out of control.

Oh like you wouldn't believe. We stopped by the UAE when I was on deployment and they pretty much live their lifestyles by the mantra of "What Would Kanye Do?" twenty-four-seven. It's fucking ridiculous.
But guys, we know more about pluto than marianas. The ocean also offers more readily available resources compared to space rocks. For example: boiling seawater caused by magma is a terrific perpetual power source. All we need is a way to harness it and poof! power problems solved (or alleviated, at least). Krill and plankton are potential food alternatives and are in very good supply. Undersea travel is largely unaffected by surface weather conditions and may serve as an alternative to ships and planes as a mode of transportation, especially during calamities. Living underwater will lessen the burden on earth's overpopulated surface (by dumping people into the ocean XD). Who knows what others we can do or find if we look a bit closer? Cost-wise, we would've made far more advances if we focused on diving down than taking flight. I don't have numbers to back me up on this, but it only seemed correct to assume so. This is my stand on it, anyway.

Unrelated:
UAE: a land full of Lambs and Chevvys and Ferraris. Where the streets are lined with gold, and it rains petrol. Where everyone lives in either a palace, or a 5-star hotel. Where 'luxurious' is an understatement.

I think that any interesting person's demographic identity (their race, gender, sexual preference, and so on) is the least interesting and least relevant thing about them.

The kind of diversity that interests me and that I value is diversity of opinions and viewpoints, not demographic diversity as represented by stock photographs of smiling racially diverse yuppies as appearing on corporate tech and finance websites. Give me 10 people all the same color who think differently over 10 people of different colors who all think exactly the same.

Well....at least America isn't the VERY worst of all countries? "USA, USA, USA!"

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

@karins: Exploring downwards is way more likely to result in us killing off thousands of species and destroying the Earth than exploring upwards. I think I'm fine with us not doing that.
Speaking of space exploration, I would love to be part of that one-way trip to Mars that is supposed to happen 2025, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm such a wuss and don't want to potentially waste the one life I'm given, seeing as it's probably going to be very risky. I'll wait until they danger-tested it, and then... I'll be walking on Mars, baby.

I like to think we are the first. So all those movies with evil aliens invading. That's just us taking resources like we do today XD.

I mean, in Australia we give money to women who have babies. It's a little backward to be complaining about people having kids if you're paying them to do so. :/
Oh shit I didn't know you were Australian, I'll have to watch my mouth now that you could feasibly be close enough to me to kill me.

Thing is in Australia over-population is far from anything of an issue, though poverty may increase drastically if we don't do something about the housing situation, oh well, I rent!

So, all my wonderfully ugly opinions, let's begin!
-I hate the current hegemonic state of RMwebs, and how much they are babies. Like reason I'm still here even after getting pissy sometimes is that you guys make me work for shit, oh and I can be a little crass and have it completely overlooked.
-While I'm banned from RMwebs, I can still use their steam group to publicize stuff, they removed the links until recently, maybe because I threatened them in a subtle manner, shit man... does that make me a cyber-terrorist?
-I fuckin love Coffee Club, not sure if it's an international branch or Aus only, but my god best place for breakfast, and pretty affordable for a good hearty meal!

Oh right, I should probably talk about games and stuff.
-I have no intent of playing a Zelda game ever, the exception being maybe Majora's mask.
-I have this weird relationship with Nintendo where I refuse to buy anything they make, even if it would make my life substantially happier.
-In most scenarios I'll support the PC gaming masterrace, I think consoles do have a place though, I can't imagine playing Ratchet and Clank or Kingdom Hearts on PC.
-I wager Xbox's demographic is Fratboys, thus I avoid it like a Louisianan plague.
-Despite my tenuous pact with Nintendo, I too lament Iwata's death.
-I used to hate twitter, now I'm using it. Hippo crate is me.
-I tried making a tumblr, I couldn't be bothered keeping it up to date.
-I will never make a reddit. (Seriously fuck reddit)
-SnowOwl is a cool guy, I think this despite being in a heated argument with him recently, I can't stay mad at people for very long. I'm not saying he's cool just because his name has Snow in it either.
-I think Liberty and I are destined to both squabble and apologize for pretty much ever. We're like Mario and Bowser or something.
-I don't hate Indra, at all. I don't blame her for hating me, though.
-Despite what a cunt I can be, I can never stay mad forever with someone. And if it would be in my best interests to get over a thing, I will for the greater good.
-Some think I talk about myself too much, well shucky darn looks like they're right!
-I can only hate something when I know very little about it. Otherwise I'm forced to see what if any good it may have.
-I think the Australian Liberal National Party are literally the dumbest and most insatiably malicious government we've ever had, and this term for them has been notably bad.
-Australia is still using fucking coal, that sucks! Everywhere is beating us sans Saudi Arabia on Climate change policy as well.
-Politics make me depressed, unless it's rpgmaker politics, then it's fucking hilarious.
-Much as I talk shit about Beleren I've had like three conversations with the guy so I don't know if I am really in a position to hate him.
-It's a small world after all in the rpgmak world, I commonly find someone I've insulted is later someone I'm discussing stuff with, how weird and bipolar is that??

Okay some of these aren't even opinions, woops!
I think you're cool too BM, you should just self-advertise a bit less.

I'll keep that in mind!

It'd be unfair to have another go so I'll let some other poor sponge unload. I've got TAFE early tomorrow anyway.
