UNOFFICIAL ANIME AND MANGA DISCUSSION TOPIC
Posts
In an effort to discover myself and learn about the world around me I discovered through a friend an interesting branch of japanese culture, anime and manga. At first I called it weird and stupid, but I myself was soon drawn in and now I'm 100% Otaku. So I come today to find others like me who share in the visual and sometimes peverted art called Anime and Manga.
All this and more hopefully will be answered.
- What are some of your favorite Animes?
What are some of your favorite Manga?

What are some of your favorite Anime?
Soul Eater, Neon Genesis Evangelion, D.Gray-Man, Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist and Hunter x Hunter
What are some of your favorite Manga?
D.Gray Man and Soul Eater.
And that's about it. Ku ku ku.

Out of it all, I would have to say that D.Gray-Man is the one I enjoy the most out of all of them. Soul Eater follows in a close second, with FMA coming behind in third. It's like...Bleach meets FMA, but I find the story to be much better. Well, better than Bleach anyway. I'm not too sure about it being better tha FMA. It starts out slow and appears to be faily generic, but things begin to heat up quickly and it just gets better from Chapter 50+.
Also, if I were to reccomend it at all, I would have to reccomend reading the Manga over watching the Anime. I don't know why, but everything seems so much more...better! Nothing is dragged out and things flow smoothly all the way through. A very enjoyable read.

What are some of your favorite Anime?
Ouran High School Host Club, the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, FLCL, Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann, Honey and Clover, and Azumanga Daioh. I mostly stick to Josei and Seinen anime these days. I watch a handful of shounen series, but am only a casual fan of them.
I would add Avatar here even though it's not technically anime, just because it's relevant to the interests of otaku either way. Avatar's awesome, and the very fact that it's American gives it such a different feeling from run-of-the-mill shounen series, and its writing is surprisingly competent. Plus the art is gorgeous.

I haven't read as much manga, sadly, even though I tend to enjoy it when I do. Azumanga Daioh, Ouran High School Host Club and Yotsubato! are the only contenders (I've also read Death Note and Tsubasa, though), and I've already listed AD and Ouran under anime. But both the anime and the manga of those two have their advantages that the other lacks....for example, Kiyohiko Azuma is a master of the beat panel. The anime uses similar timing, but for some reason that extra "down time" in a manga is a really different experience.

Anyone ever heard of IdolMaster? Its japan only but its quite interesting. It started out as a playstation game, but a sequel was made on the 360', and made the 360 more popular in japan. The game was about you, as a producer, to try and get a selection of girls to become the next big pop sensation. I could go on if you guys want.
That's a game ... not an anime. Anyways, I don't like anime nearly as much as I use to a few years ago. I guess most of it is relatively uninteresting nowadays. However, a few good ones I've watched recently is Bakaneko, a small section from a series called Ayakashi. As for movies, I've always been a fan of Hayao Miyazaki's work.
Actually they made an anime for it, since it was popular whenever or whatnot; thats why i mentioned it. :P I've seen alot of anime, mostly the ones on adult swim. Cowboy bebop, love hina, bleach, samurai champloo, ghost in the shell, full metal, death note and all others.
My running second-favorite anime series of all time is probably Dennou Coil, which is also my pick for most underrated. Tying for first place are FLCL and Fullmetal Alchemist--for all their flaws, Fullmetal Alchemist is probably one of the best shonen shows ever made and FLCL is the only anime I'd classify as art. Also, the dub for FLCL is the only one I've heard that doesn't actually sound like a dub.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also a really fun show, and Paranoia Agent got me interested in Satoshi Kon; an interest which I haven't yet reciprocated, unfortunately. Then, of course, there's Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
In terms of Manga, Monster by Naoki Urasawa screws over Death Note easily, but is easily bested by 20th Century Boys, which succeeds despite it's crappy ending--and considering how it ends, that's saying a lot. Fullmetal Alchemist is my favorite shonen manga ever, and although Tekkonkinkreet isn't shonen it still deserves ridiculously high marks.
That's it, really. Honorable mention: Kekkaishi, Gurren Lagann

I don't read much Manga, in fact, Azumanga Daioh is the only one I've finished. As far as Anime goes though, favorite series include SaiKano, Wolf's Rain, Rozen Maiden, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Neon Genesis Evangellion and Serial Experiments: Lain. Avatar was fun too, like shadowtext said, even if it isn't 'anime', but I didn't actually like its art too much.
's fun stuff.

You know thats one i like with american "anime". While it still holds the anime feel and style, they incorporate a whole lot more action and stuff... sorta like teen titans, and avatar and what not.
Neon Genesis is definitely one of the best anime i've seen. I just saw the latest Gundam Destiny movie the other day which was incredible and as good as the series.
Another recent favourite of mine would be Code Geass. They finally brought out the first two volumes of it a couple of weeks ago.

Yes, i've seen both of the neon genesis films. Evangelion: Death and Rebirth and The End of Evangelion. I find the films to be good and they run for a decent amount of time. End of Evangelion would be my favourite out of the two films despite it being an alternate ending to the series.
author=demondestiny link=topic=1822.msg29368#msg29368 date=1220532421"Both?" There are about twenty seven Eva films. I'm wondering if Drumsticks is referring to the remake movies.

The Rebuild Of Evangelion movies are very good.
Well...I can't really speak for ALL of them, as I've only watched one (since it's the only one released and subbed). However, that single moive was very well done. From animation to story telling--it was all there! And some of the extra things they did with a few of the angels also adds a nice little twist to it. It definitly feels much more solid than the series did, and I can't wait for the second movie to come out. I want to see how this thing ends! (But I'll have to wait, as there are 4 movies planned! =X)
Also, for fans of Naruto, Bleach, and Anime lingering in the same general category as those, I would reccomend Soul Eater. One awesome Anime with animation that doesn't fail to please! There are 51 episodes planned, and as of now there have been 22 of those 51 released. Great story, character, action...everything! Well, in my opinion, anyway. There are those who dislike it as much as I love it, and I'm all fine and dandy as long as they don't try and pass it off as a FACT. I hate when people do that. =X
Here is a short video clip of it. I love the episode, and I found this to be a very epic scene. It's not spoiling anything major for those interested in watching it.
(Don't forget to click "watch in high quality" for both videos!!!)

The opening is also epic. =X

Yeah, i've just started watching Soul Eater. I have only seen the first five episodes but it's good so far. If you haven't seen Code Geass before i suggest you watch that.
Yeah, right now Im watching Soul eater, code geass, and black cat(which comes on the funimation channel)I have to say that my favorite still is Wolf Rain. But I do like the 3 I mention plus vampire knights, Black lagoon, last exile, soul hunter, shura no toki, eden's bowy, rune soldier, Gun X Swords, heat guy J, naruto, the last airbender(tho some say it is not an anime),and whole lot more that I cant think of now. Oh and trigun, which I just finish the other week. That was really good. I heard they are making a movie of it. I cant wait for that.
