WHY (GOD WHY) SO MANY MEDIEVAL FANTASY GAMES AND SO LITTLE OF ANYTHING ELSE?

Westerns have historically been the hardest genre to translate to any kind of video game, let alone an RPG, but also, I feel, they have the potential to be one of the coolest. However if you look at it, there are few to no decent wester games in any genre for any platform, even looking at professionaly made games.

Wild Arms kind of was a Western game. Live A Live also had a great Western section to it.

Wild Arms 3 was actively a Western, yeah.

The others just had a sort of 'feel' to it.

I'm making one. In fact, it's right here

I'll post some screens when it doesn't look like total ass.
Every time I read this topic title I think, "Why not?" followed quickly by a "What does it matter, anyway?"

I forget if I posted here or not.

I actually like a Medieval setting, but I prefer a realistic one. I do not care for things like "Stamina system" and stuff, but I'd like to feel like I'm in a Medieval area (Either a Mediterranean one or a Medieval northern Europe is fine by me). I don't like elves and things like that, so I wouldn't add them. I also find a happy Modern setting to be fun to work in.

I don't have a problem with people making their game in a Medieval fantasy setting, but if they do that, I would hope that they chose it because it's what they really want to do, and not just because most other RPGs do it. Resources can be a problem, but not as much if you make your own or if you edit stuff.

It would be a nice experiment to try a setting you normally don't do, and to do some research on it for the game. That could be done in a very short game if you feel like trying it out.

That's really not what this thread is about, it's about asking why other things, popular in other mediums, aren't as popular as Indie (RPGs) games.

I also wouldn't mind seeing more realistic medieval games or ones more based in medieval myth than lol airship at lvl 30. Unless it's a steampunk setting, in which case, more power to the airships.
Realism at the cost of fun is a sin that should be punishable by flogging. I do not want to play a medieval setting where my characters are constantly covered in dung and you stand a 60% chance of contracting the plague and getting a game over. I do not want to have to walk the entire distance of whatever world you've built just because you can't figure out a way to sensibly give me an airship. And I do not want to be stuck with no other options in battle than "attack" because you don't like wizards.

And when I say "I do not want," what I mean to say is "I will stop playing pretty quickly."

I am 100% sure this is not what Ocean was talking about when he said 'realism', ST.

I don't know, medieval settings could be more realistic without being depressingly "naturalistic" in the Hemingway mode. I think that Medieval RPGs could do with a little bit of the desperate nature of trying to survive in medieval times, at least in terms of flavor. I just feel that games set in the dark ages should be darker; more plague, more innocents being put to the sword. The original Legacy of Kain did a really good job of this.

Every time I hear someone trot out realism as a selling point or a thing to be aimed for in a video game, it's always for some amazingly innovative new feature like "Your character can have sudden heart attacks without warning" that makes a game fifty times more terrible. Forgive me if I tend to assume the worst when I hear people talking about it.

Yeah, I hate those types of things. "Your character can only run for a short time before they need to catch their breath!", "One hit and your character is dead, just like real life!" and things like that really annoy me. That's not what I meant at all.
