Make them watch your intro the first time through, but allow them to skip it on New Game + playthroughs or similiar. Or, just make your intro kick ass.

I would argue that the "Do you want to skip the introduction" is kinda like pressing Start or something to skip a cutscene in a game. I'd rather have that option there. Also, people tend to generally release multiple versions of their game, so I don't want to see the intro yet again. If the game is short and replayable, I also don't want to see the intro again.

If I have not seen the intro, then I will see it. I've had someone tell me they skipped the intro and cutscenes in my game so they could try out the game itself. I don't mind them doing that. They went back in later and played with the intro/cutscenes.
This is true to a certain extent. The problem is when a newcomer comes to try the game out, they're confused. They're probably asking themselves "Why did he/she add this here? Should I watch it or skip what could be an essential part of the plot? What if it's too long to hold my interest?"
What you said is correct, but usually in commercial games you can pause the cutscene mid-way through and continue on with the game. It isn't the case with RM games. It's acceptable when someone releases multiple versions of their game, but it would be better to just have a save point at the end of the last demo so you could continue where you left off.

i think that if there were a lot more non-medievil style games or nothing involving a heavy amount of mechs i could work with that.

I think you're thinking of your Super Robot Taisen game.
