The Misaos are monumentally silly but this community goes way out of its way to make sure no one ever respects us or takes us seriously.

I can't think of a time the misaos resulted in anything but complaining, but apparently it's very important to our community even though no one seems to like them.

Voting is fun!

I don't think anyone takes the Misaos as the end-all be-all Best Games Of RMN, anyway. But, for what it's worth, didn't we have a huge discussion topic about alternate ideas for running the Misaos after last years?

I like them too. Obviously enough to spend a couple hours to compile a list of notable games for a thread so people can discuss their favourite games of the year. Because honestly people could benefit from playing more games. While they're not making them themselves. I think the Misaos should be about congratulating each other for what we've done, for supporting each other and discussing how the year's gone in games, encouraging each other to make more games and hopefully gaining something from all this. I think it all depends on your attitude and how seriously you take a bunch of imaginary trophies that are supposed to instill more joy than grief. It should be an opportunity to discuss what you liked in the year, what you didn't like, and foster a positive sense of community to others for their games by incentivizing them with love and imaginary prizes of gold and silver. Instead it's coming up with all the reasons why something shouldn't exist, when it's actually supposed to be a celebratory, jubilant occasion giving people the due they deserve for blessing us with cute games. If your game doesn't get nominated, it doesn't matter, it's just an award. You can live without it, right? Doesn't mean they're a bunch of tripe, right? Have fun with it.

I mean I can see the reasoning behind hurt feelings if your game doesn't get nommed- it's basically "Nobody likes you."

Of course, that usually means either you're not social enough on the forum to get any attention, in which case why do you care, or your game doesn't stand out for whatever reason, in which case that's an opportunity to solicit some crit.

Or, alternately, to rethink why you're making gam.
I'm in it for the makerscore. And babes.

I don't really ever notice people being upset that their game doesn't get nominated, it's more that almost every other year people think the game that won shouldn't have won, or whatever.

I think some people secretly don't like that they didn't get nominated they just won't say it because they'll obviously get ostracized for it so they express their discontent by naming random games they say they think should really get a nomination but what they're really mad about is that they didn't get theirs. Not all people, but some. Even complaining about someone's game they know not getting nominated could be a form of bias and selfishness. Even hatred for popular games, even if they are bad, is usually unwarranted and can tend happen due to jealousy. If you claim an awards system is corrupted because a game you don't like and is popular gains awards, that's not the fault of the community, that's just the result of a vote that led to a certain result that you can choose to accept or reject. Misao season is nowhere as pervasive as the commercialization of Christmas so it's easy to just ignore and watch it whisk on by like a gust of wind. No harm, no foul, and in fact people who rejoice and have fun giving trophies to people who honestly have made great achivements (most games are great achievements worth celebrating, even if they're absolutely crappy we should celebrate them), will do so gladly. Now maybe I'm being a bit too acidic here, but I feel strongly about this and I think as an awards ceremony, it holds value beyond sheer tradition.

I'm not sure it's possible for the Misaos to be corrupt, unless like the admins in charge of coding cheat the polls somehow. That's the beauty of a popularity contest: it's just one mang, one vote, and no expectation of fairness or balance. The fact that it's just "Who do we like best?" and not related to anything particularly substantial is what makes it fun: it's a nothing little end-of-the-year thing that's basically an excuse to talk about what got published and squabble over predictions. (And then get mad when Popular Tumblr Game wins.)

We have caught people trying to cheat the misaos before.

Well, yeah, but it's not the SYSTEM being corrupt. I mean, the fact that you're stopping people from cheating says the opposite!
Honestly, I quite like the Misaos (although choosing to permanently drop anchor here right as last year's one concluded probably had something to do with it.) It certainly provides an insight into the psyche of RMN's visitors that year, if nothing else.

Then, fact that "Tumblr" nominees often win is in many ways a good thing, as it keeps us from becoming too insular. In a way, the question might well be not "why the masses of Tumblr et. al. ignore our games?", but "Why we ignore them?". I mean, HOME had been the frontrunner in several categories last year (before ultimately ceding ground to Oneshot like everything else), and it continues to get attention nowadays. Yet, not a single one of its reviews was written by an established user on here, as far as I remember, and I found that quite strange (I suppose I should get on it myself...some day.)

Lastly, the idea of replacing Misaos with something like a top reviewer committee sound nice in theory, but would be too early for now. Not only is actually organising for people to play that many games too difficult at the moment, but I just don't think it'll look good for us to be replacing a popular vote like that when there's still almost a thousand unreviewed games on here, including plenty of complete ones that were added throughout this year, only to be promptly forgotten about afterwards.

I might sound idealistic here, but I think that the right day for a Misao Committee would be the day when the number of "(Completed?) games with a download without a review" reaches zero, and not a moment sooner. Even then, we might wish to keep the original Misao with its silly name for those needing it, and have the Committee as a parallel, "Critic's Choice" event.

P.S.

HOME is popular on tumblr because it's a fixfic for OFF, which has a (deserved) huuuuuuge fandom. It isn't popular among RMN regulars because it honestly isn't very good or notable when decoupled from the fandom.

So a part of gam mak is frolicing in the forums?

Ah, I still remember good ol' Sakaguchi, posting now and then about social economics, bossing everyone around, likeable guy, he had friends.
I just had to check out his game, Final something or whatever 6, I nominated it for most RTP game.

I don't think being social on the forum necessarily means you get a lot of attention for your games. It means you get more attention, but the guy who made Blank Dream has never set foot in the forums and his game is freakishly popular. Sure, it helps to be active in the forum so people can notice you, and I think it's a good thing to have mutual support, but I wouldn't consider it a necessity. Sometimes you can get more done when you're not busy being distracted by people.

Part of winning popularity contests is making yourself visible to the voters, yes. It's another form of marketing, albeit for something dinky and ultimately with little point.
