12/12/2012 AKA THE MAYAN PROPHECY
Posts
A lot of people already know this, but the Mayans made a prediction that on December 12, 2012, the world would end. The scientific basis behind this is that on that day, the earth completes a wobble on it's axis, and will be in allignment with the Sun and the center of the Milky Way galaxy. My friend started talking about it recently, and I'd liek to hear people's opinions on the subject.
What, if anything, will happen on December 12, 2012?

I've talked to a couple of people about this. Personally, I'm not to sure. Some people say it is Y2k all over again, but others say there is some odd amount of proof behind it.
One person said that things were on alignment with Revelation from the Bible. They said if Obama becomes president and by 2009 Iran and Iraq make a peace treaty, then things are on track based on it.
I hope not, I still have more life to live. :-\

Using the power of HARD MATH I calculated that the world ended two years ago. People just haven't realized it yet.
Its all trash.
There have been countless arbitrary dates which people have deemed the coming apocalypse.
Barring all of the world's nuclear arsenal exploding all at once, a one-day apocalypse will never happen. Just a bunch of alarmism.

Those clever Mayans! Having the ability to predict the end of the world in such a way that it coincidentally aligns with an easily remembered date, in a calendar that wasn't even invented yet!
WOW.
WOW.
I think I read somewhere that the Mayan calendar ends on that date, and that there is no actual basis in Mayan mythology or otherwise suggesting that it's the end of the world.
Then again, the world is even more screwed up than usual these days, so...

If the Mayans could calculate the end of the world then I'm sure they'd be able to come up with a Gregorian Calender and make sure the predicted end of the world lands on a convienent date!
Yeah, I was wondering about the 12th and 21st thing- if no one noticed that. It's the 21st because that's the winter solstice, a time of high energy levels, among other things. Though you would think the end would be closer to Samhein than Yule.
I don't believe anything will happen, but I'll still be disappointed if/when it doesn't.

Also, it's 12/21/12. Not 12/12/12
Yup! The Mayan calendar is cyclic. So, basically just think of it like a clock. What happens after 12:59? The clock rolls over to 1:00. What happens on 12/21/12? The calendar rolls over to 1.
So, we go to 1/1/13 ten days early? That'll suck for Christmas 2012, and play havoc with Release Something XXI. Looks like Retail SHOULD be worrying about 12/21/12, then, since Christmas is when they make almost all of their money. Or do you mean 12/22/12 will just be the first day of the new Maya cycle?
It'll probably just be cold like every other December 22nd.
We should move to Metric time. Days (or a decahour) would be 10 hours long, each hour being 100 centihours (or 1000 millihours). 100 days would be a kilohour. A year could be a gigahour.
Screw keeping time by that ancient method of calculation astronomical phenomena!

I really just don't believe in this at all so i have nothing to say about it. Plus if it was y2k wouldn't it happen on new years.
yeah, the second 12 was a typo, sorry
And the date on teh mayan calander is something liek 13.0.0.0
There's actually an explaination behind the prediction, but It's late and I don't wanna look it up again right now lol
It had something to do with a portal to teh netherworld tho
The most popular scientific theory is that the magnetic poles will shift and cause the earth's plates to move around, and no one's sure if the shift will be over a period of days or years. Either way, major natural disasters if it happens.

eh, it would be awesome to see the end of the world, but i think we have to sit down and chill to about 2050 or so
The real end of the world will be sometime in 2036 (I think) when some comet will come within like 1403 furlongs of earth, possibly getting caught in our gravity field and smashing into WIP's front porch.
I think the LHC is more likely to kill us all than a theoretical polar shift anyway. the big bang was huge - even a mini one will be big =/
the LHC is going to create a mini black hole that will slowly suck up everything, then create a big bang and make an entirely new universe from scratch (hence why the Mayan calendar repeats).

Saw that one comin. ;D
Bet you nothing that the clock time will read 12:21 or something similar.
