[RMMV] NO MP3S WTF?
Posts
MV doesn't seem to ('t least natively) support the MP3 file format. That can't possibly be right, can it? I mean tell me I'm doing something stupid here. I knew it wasn't going to support MIDI going in, but this is FRICKIN' ridiculous. Edit: actually it's not letting me import music...at all? I converted to the MP3 into an M4A and imported it both ways in both formats and it just will not show up in the editor.
EDIT: DOES IT SERIOUSLY ONLY TAKE OGGS?
While I'm at it, how do you get at the base scripts of MV to make minor adjustments? Or is the only scripting possible literally by plugins? Like if I wanted my title screen music to not fadeout and continue playing into the next map, I could do that in VX by just setting fade out bgm to false or commenting it out or whatever. But now with MV I need to hope someone wrote a plugin for that? Again, this can't be right, can it?

Blame patent trolling for MP3, convert your music to OGG (which is a royalty free format).
The base scripts are in the js folder of a new project, though making a mini plugin to patch the base script might make upgrading the base easier.

It might use OGG for the PC version or maybe that was mp4... I dunno. Android can only use one of the file types and the PC should be able to use both. It definitely should take both mp4 and ogg. Benefit of MV is you don't have to import anymore. You can just put the files in their respective folders if they are formatted right.
Also the core scripts/base scripts are not accessible the way that VXA where everything was loaded in the engine. They are located in the js folder of your project. I haven't really played around with the base scripts as I don't know much about JavaScript but that is where you will find them.

You can do the same thing with Ace, probably other engines. (I've just only done it with Ace.) Apparently you can cause problems if you do it while the program's open but I've never done that. vOv
I have. It just doesn't show up. You gotta close the program and reopen for them to appear.
OGG is a good alternative to MP3, so it's fine. It's not like having the choice between midi and mp3.

In Ace the resource database refreshes when you open and close the import screen. Any modifications made to existing resources or any additions you made will pop out when you close the import screen.
Ogg has better compression. 5.50MB mp3 files are reduced to 2MB without sound losing much quality.
Get audacity stormcrow, you'll be able to turn mp3 into ogg quite quickly and efficiently.

Better use this online converter. That should be the fastest solution.
1. Hit the blue button to upload your audio-file.
2. choose quality and to which file you want to convert.
3. Hit the second button to convert.
Online converters are kinda shady and inconvenient and probably slower, just use https://www.any-audio-converter.com/any-audio-converter.php
Well yes, if what you want is just a fast convert as is, I guess using an online converter works.
But I do reccommend stormcrow and everyone to learn to use audacity if you're not using another audio editor already. It will be useful for everyone as developers in the long run, since it's a deceptively powerful AND free audio editing and creating tool, not just converter. You can in time, not only simply open a file to convert it but edit out unnecesary silence and spaces in the case of songs and sound effects extracted from a recording or video or a file, optimize the song in case it comes with additional noise, or the volume levels are too low and you need to normalize the audio, etc. It has lots of neat filters and effects you can use to create cool stuff.
I've made lots of neat ambience pads for surreal landscapes using the Paulstretch effect on various tracks.
In the case of VX Ace, you can easily add Loop Points to ogg files to get those final fantasy battle theme kind of music transitions, so you can turn even songs which would normally not work as loops, into functional loops that you can use in-engine. I am not sure if MV also supports loop points in ogg.
Actually I'm curious, anyone know if MV supports loop points? I don't have it installed to check.
EDIT: The curiosity burned my entrails so I quickly installed MV. It does, RPG Maker MV support loop points! Awesome!

What is a Loop Point and is it more efficient than me just cutting down the music manually
Fuck yeah, Mirak. Ya damn beast. That's some good knowledge!
author=SoozIn a nutshell, it's that thing like in final fantasy that when the battle music starts playing, the initial melody doesn't play twice. You tell rpgmaker what parts of the song to start playing again after the song reaches one point. The tutorial i linked to explains it a bit better... I think.

I used Audacity to make a lot of sound bites of Star Trek dialogue. I would cut the piece and listen to it in Audacity and it was fine. When I put them in Ace they would be cut short by milleseconds, which is totally obvious because the last word gets cut off. I'm not sure if it's an Audacity issue or Ace issue, but it was certainly annoying.
I've been using Audacity for years. It's great. But it can be difficult to learn for beginners and not everyone needs those features. If someone wanted a great tool to learn, it's the best. But I wouldn't suggest Audacity if it was only going to be used for conversion. Especially batch conversion. If I'm not mistaken Audacity used to have some kind of batch option, but it got updated and the menus trimmed down significantly and I don't see that any more.

It was a you issue i guess because it has never happened to me, neither in Ace or in Audacity.

I'm just gonna say, Audacity is free and cool and you should have it on your computer because it's awesome to be able to edit or mess around with sound files whenever you want to, just for fun.
Wanna lower a lady singer so she sounds like a man? Wanna listen to a slow speech faster? Just wanna play around? YOU CAN. FOR FREE.
It's super great.

I've had audacity on my computer for years and probably used it to convert the musics I was using to .ogg five minutes on either side of my OP, but I am still annoyed. Having to convert every single music file I put in my game using a separate program is a hundred little extra steps I could do without, making this another tally in the "I probably won't be switching to MV as my main dev tool" column. It's safe enough to say literally none of my music--either the stuff specifically squirreled away for use in games, or the stuff that is just on my computer because I am a human being and listen to music--is already in .ogg format so yeah, very inconvenient. (It does not help that more than occasionally, for one reason or another, the music I wanna use needs to be ripped from Youtube, so that's running it through TWO converters, youtube to mp3 (shady online converter) and then export as .ogg (audacity) and THEN import/drop in folder. So in those cases we're up to at least a three step process to get the song I want to play in MV.)
This online youtube to mp3 converter let's you download in .ogg . I've used it for years and it's not shady.

You'll still need audacity to edit out silence in the first part of youtube videos, or cutting out intro/outros, and so on. From audacity, you can directly save onto the BGM folder, so you don't need to grab the file and drop it. That's one step less, at least.
Also, ultimately it's up to you, but it's not good practice to use mp3 in games at all because the format is patented. Unless it's something like 2k3 in which your only other option is MIDI. It would be good practice to get accustomed to using open source formats for your audio.

I specifically use this one to mass convert audio files https://www.dbpoweramp.com/
And since when is gamedev not convenient? lol
