LET'S DISCUSS: GENDER EQUALITY, IN GAMING AND IN LIFE
Posts
yeah Orig, my real beef with your statement was that it sounded like standard fundamentalist philosophy; WOMEN ARE TO BE LOVED AND NOT UNDERSTOOD. That's an incredibly ignorant and simplistic statement.
People CAN come to completely understand one another. They merely have to be willing to communicate their thoughts properly to each other and know how to do so. Not ALL marriages fall apart, after all. Understanding is a big issue with longevity in relationships.
Glad we agree on the ad, however.

Well, you believe that, and that's great. That's beautiful, man. But my cynicism towards mutual understanding is just a thing I suppose. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to agree with you. But I digress. :-\
Having known Orig for a while, I highly doubt he has a hint of misogyny. I think you may have jumped the gun on judgment there, Asa, which is out of character for you frankly.
Sounded to me like saying the opposite sex isn't meant to be understood, in that context implies that you can't try to "figure out" your mate on a scientific/psychological basis. There are some things you have to take on faith. That quote directly applies to situations where my girl has stopped me in the middle of giving her advice (during times of her crisis) and said "just give me a hug and tell me it will all be okay." That sort of thing.

I don't understand this.
Saying that men and women minds work in set different ways is retarded. Everyone is different. Hell I will admit I think too much to properly play FPS's and platforming, despite enjoying them and playing them a lot--I still suck at them. And I'm a dude.

I don't adhere to the stereotype that girl gamers are somehow inferior in any way, although don't take this the wrong way, dear wife, but I kick your ASS at any fighting game... except for Super Smash Bros. You have me beat there.
Yeah, I know. >.> You always get a fistfull of Princess Zelda or Roy when he's around (hey, he's got fluffy red hair, I am obligated to use him! And Fire Emblem = <3). One day I will defeat you with Nakoruru or Galford, I promise. But you always pwn me at Puzzle Fighter, too. We're even in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, though... and Mario Kart DS? *evil grin* Typically, I am not good at competing in game form. There are a few where I hold my can own, but there are no games where I specifically pwn at competitively.
My younger sister is really good at 3D adventure games, like Mario 64 and Starfox Adventures. She takes in the enviroment very well, while I always miss something. Then again, she had a hard time with multiplayer battling in Tales as she felt EVERY CHARACTER was slow. *shrug*
I just think that previous experience, in real life and in gaming both have a lot to do with the kind of gaming you may or may not be good at. For example, my sister has been trained in how to use a gun and rides motorcycles. She has great vision for her surroundings, and that's why 3D adventures always applied well to her. Her eyes are trained to see quickly and react to it. She does pretty well in Smash Brothers with Samus and Yoshi.
With me, I wanted to be a pilot as a kid, but I have horrible eyes - stigmatism in both sides, one eye is nearsighted and the other farsighted. I never see anything quickly, it takes me a few moments to guage what's going on, which is one reason why I am horrible at fighters and competative puzzle games. When I wasn't playing games, I was reading or drawing. Though when I read, I have to read a few times before it sinks in completely most of the time. While it's not an excuse, it does tell you a bit about what my brain can compute completely before I act. I played a hell of a lot of strategy games like SimCity and Utopia as a kid because of the fact that I needed to be able to absorb what was going on before acting. RPGs like Final Fantasy or Shining Force allowed me to take in what I was doing. I'm still majorly the same way.
It's previous conditioning that determines how you how you play as far as I'm concerned. I don't know how it would fare for someone that's never played video games in their life, because I don't really associate with people that don't game as they never quite understand why I have my fangirlisms.
Saying that men and women minds work in set different ways is retarded.
Wow, uh, hmm. Try reading a basic psychology book? A class or two? I mean seriously this is embarrassing to read!

While I can't say I understand most of how people work because I'm so warped, I know that there are ingrained mindsets of male and female. But there are cases of men having female qualities and vice versa, too. If we weren't built differently mentally, what would be the point of gender, other than reproduction?
I don't like being a woman most of the time. I've hated the fact since I can remember. The only thing that changed it was going through pregancy and having my baby. But even though I try so hard to hide it, I can be as girly as the next girl. My namesake, Suzuricho, is proof. I played Nintendogs. I have that side of me that has always ached to be pretty, dreamed of glorious weddings, write in those fuzzy diaries, and adopt cute things... but if someone would ask me about it, I'd reject everything there with a blush so red it would rival a tomato. I had to hide it around my cousins, and I did a good job - until puberty. Oh and there's that whole patronized and looked down upon thing. Guess I'm not a complete tomboy.
>>;
I'm gonna go play Utopia now. Got some aliens attacking my colony. Stupid alien douchebags.

I just didn't care for the way it was phrased, it smacked to me of fundamentalism.
"women are to be loved and not understood", that's the phrase I had a problem with.
Yes, we all think differently, that stands to reason. Are women completely incapable of being understood by men, so all we should do is love them and forget about trying to reason with them? I don't buy into that religious zealot type of thinking . That
may have worked for the 1700s, but it won't fly today.
That's pretty much all I was saying, really. He clarified and I noted that perhaps he just hasn't found the right person to want to try to understand, is all.
Well that's depressing, maybe my current girlfriend isn't one I'm meant to understand either. A lot of the time our minds are going in two massively different directions. She's really liberal and agnostic, and I'm a conservative-leaning libertarian christian. I drive her nuts when I say "Go America!" during movies, just to poke fun at her. But we have an emotional bond/link that's ridiculously strong somehow.
They do say opposites attract. My wife and I are polar opposites in a LOT of ways.
Still, there's enough we do have in common to keep us glued, heh heh.
November 4th must've been interesting for you two, eh Harmonic?

Actually, I concluded that Obama was the better candidate. Wouldn't have been the case if the Republican Nominee was one of the more strict constructionist / pure conservative ones instead of McCain, who might as well be a right-leaning democrat. It's funny how I liked Obama better, even though I'm pro life, pro military, anti gun control, anti bailout, anti amnesty for illegals... etc etc
But anyway, back on topic:
When I read the topic title, I had gender equality within the games in mind. Like the characters and such.
I think it's pretty well known that I have a propensity for amazonian girls. Think Ayla, the pretty/cute ones, not the god awful bodybuilders. And also, girls who fit into the fighter/knight/warrior archetypes, like Celes, Beatrix. So maybe I'm biased. But I really enjoy those characters in games, and have made an obvious point to include them in my own games. Example: Diedre/Alma from Legacies of Dondoran 1, or the big-assed green clothes sword girl in my screenshots for LodVX. I don't mean the super fast ninja types, I mean actual warriors, who can carry heavy equipment and take some hits and not have to rely on superhuman agility/evasion.
I'm well aware of the physiological differences between the sexes in real life, but video games aren't real life. So I think giving gamers of both sexes the chance to play as a female avatar with absolutely no strength/durability disadvantage is a great thing. Shit, look at WoW nowadays. Female characters are quite prevalent.

Are you, DS, are you really? Dude looks like a lady to me.
Seriously...
Yes anyone who has implied it is possible to understand women is completely wrong, sorry. Women are the most godamn mysterious thing on the planet.
Well I think girls and guys generally don't like the same things so I don't think you should be offended by that picture. Are you offended by chick flick posters? It's sort of the same idea. Most girls like girly things so ads targeting them are girly. No big deal.
Women don't have as many adventures because of when they're pregnant or nursing they will be reluctant to put themselves or the baby at risk. Considering that most women have children during their able years, this means that during the times when they would be able to have adventures, they would be too young or too old. If, on the other hand, you have a celibate female of adult age, she could go on an adventure. Typically the only celibate female characters you will encounter would be priestesses. Hence the lady-whitemage association.

That's why I went outside the box with my game in making my heroine pregnant during the story. Because people have the mindset that pregnant women can't do much. Well, as a pregnant woman and someone who has been previously pregnant, I can say that I don't do much adventuring in the flesh. I do it in my games and it's more relaxing for me that way anyway.

Well I don't like action movies or pornography or especially cars that much but I don't worry too much about ads targeting men who do - because a majority do, and the majority of the ads therefore target them. I don't think it is about gender inequality but a real difference in sex that applies to most people.
Also I like most movies! Especially chick flicks.

*shakes head* I get more out of playing a video game than I have ever got out of a movie. No kidding.
