ANGRY VIDEO GAME NERD
Posts
I never really dug the 'I REVIEW VIDEO GAMES WITH A SNARKY ATTITUDE AND HATE MOST OF THEM' so stuff like this isn't really my thing. I see enough of that all over the Internet. Sometimes they can be funny, though.
I honestly can't stand that guy.
First off, there have been a few games on there that I have likes that he has dissed for lame reasons (i.e. Castlevania 2. I don't care what anyone says, that game is fun)
Secondly, most of the games he reviews that suck, a four year old could tell you that they suck. And he's not all that funny about it. He's like Carlos Mencia, using anger and forced jokes to make up for lack of wit.
Finally, he comes off as one of those guys who hates all NES games and only plays Xbox. That ticks me off. Although I'll never understand the people who only play Xbox games, but I will respect their opinions. However, I can't stand the "Xbox-only" people who diss on people for liking retro games.

I don't watch AVGN much because I haven't had much interest in games as old as the ones he reviews. To be honest, I was born when they were produced, but I didn't grow up on them. I was an SNES/Megadrive kid.
Nostalgia Critic is more relevant to me because I have actually seen most of the movies he reviews (I even have some recorded on VHS), so I can directly relate, and even have particular moments I anticipate him ripping to shreds in the reviews. The Surf Ninja review, especially, took me by surprise.
ThatGuyWithTheGlasses has reflected many times in comments and interviews that he's playing a character loosely based on himself, which makes most of his reviews complete exaggerations of his opinion. That allows you to more easily view it as entertainment instead of an attack on old movies. They do get pretty exhausting if you view them consecutively, though.

What? You actually think he's serious 100% of the time? He's more of a "retro gamer" then you'll ever be. Have you seen his collection? Has he ever hated on a good NES game like SMB, Megaman, Contra, etc? I agree that he has bad acting, forced humor and all that. But saying he's some new-age Xbox fanatic is just silly. He's huge on oldschool video game collecting. You sound like you're talking about The Irate Gamer.
Another humor critic I'd like to mention (that I think is underrated) is Spoony One (or his site, Spoony Experiment). He doesn't exactly have any kind of angry gimmick setup or fancy film techniques. But he really does take the games quite literally almost as if you could feel his pain as he goes through some really bad games. He has a talented way of speaking and is really fun to listen to.
Also Nostalgia Critic is just awesome.

The guy comes off so hateful at times, though. Maybe he is more of a reotrogamer, I don't know. I just know that when I used to watch him, there were times where it seemed like he was going after the entire NES collection because some NES are really bad. It got to the point where I couldn't watch him anymore.
Especially after his diss on Castlevania 2. Although I realize the bosses were so bad in that game, the exploration and rpg elements are great and he totally disregarded those elements just for the sake of humor.
I've never actually seen The Irate Gamer. I usually don't regular video series like that. I just remember being forced to watch AVGN a lot at my friend's house, 'cause he thought he was "uber-hilarious."
AVGN FAQ
Q: That game's not that bad, you're whining about it, just because you suck at it!
A: Remember this is for comedy. Sure my gripes with the games stem from truth, but they are exaggerated. The whole point is to play bad. If you want to see somebody play good, go watch a speed run. If you take my reviews seriously, you are missing the whole point. Think for yourself. I may actually like some of the games I'm complaining about. I only focus on the negative. Some of my complaints may be legit and others far fetched. To this day, I still get long winded emails bitching about my Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest review, describing every last detail why they disagree with my video. Meanwhile, I'm just laughing my ass off. It was just a quick little video I made one night when I was bored, just for a little joke, and there's real “Angry Nerd's†getting mad about it, which is sad, pathetic and hilarious! The same people probably believe that I go around in real life, wearing a white pressed shirt, stuffed with pens in the pocket, and saying “fuck†all the time and talking about buffallos taking diarrhea dumps.

Spoony is a wierd one. Sometimes he's funny, sometimes he just goes on and on and on and on and on. It makes the good parts feel really awkward. =/
