Well, in the 50s it was shown that as soda pop consumption increased, so too did polio cases. Of course, the fact that it was warm and summer-y had nothing to do with it.
There was a program on public radio recently about people who know just barely enough about a topic to start a conversation or enter an argument about it without actually knowing what they are talking about. The most common way people do this is by saying "Yeah but there have been all sorts of studies . . ."
I've heard these urban legens about soy products too and really people are just citing their hypotheses. All of them are entirely inconclusive. I guess there were a few cases where rats were fed their weight in soy every day and they got a little messed up but you know what that means. You are also disregarding the outrageous longevity of people in cultures that are centered almost entirely around ingesting soy in its many forms.
Also soy milk is pretty gross. It is not something you should drink. Its best use is as an ingredient; in coffee, cereal, or baking for example. It does not mix will with cheese so I keep some dairy milk handy when I am cooking.
Also yes I do have an eating disorder I thought you guys would be helpful and supportive :(
Abite: I have heard that almond milk is delicious!
The whole shebang to do with soy is its phyto-estrogens and theories on its effects on humans. One postulates that the phytoestrogens hook up with our hormone receptors, thus blocking out our own estrogen and testosterone, and testosterone is a huge factor in things like heart disease. Ergo longevity!
(and I changed the topic title, because this this thread is getting off topic. I'll change it back when we're back on track.)
EDIT:
After working out for 2 weeks-ish, I've lost 8 lbs! But probably because I've been sick for 5 days straight with (what I think is) the Norwalk virus!

Yeah same here. I tend to lose a lot of weight when i've been sick and then put it back on by eating.

Well, considering I pay money to study this stuff I'd like to at least think what I know on the matter bears some weight. :(
By the way, does anyone else have any trouble getting motivated to work out on the winter months? With the cold for me comes the desire to sit around in the warmth of my house and idle, and not work out ever. I'm trying to combat that right now, and I figured out that cold showers help out a lot with getting motivated. And cold showers are very, very good for you.
Actually, because of years of playing hockey and indoor track and a host of other winter activities (street hockey, pond hockey, skiiing, general running around in the snow), I have come to associate the winter months with physical activity.
It's the summer where I have ZERO motivation. Plus, there aren't any sports in the summer (baseball and golf are hobbies at best).

That's really awesome, man; most of the people I know (or in general, I'd bet you're the exception) associate winter with it being too cold to move or do anything. They call it cabin fever or something? Admittedly, I was like this until recently.
I've made an interesting observation; how you look correlates into how you can wear clothes and how 'fashionable' you are. People with 'bad' physiques have a hard time looking good with almost anything, and have to work harder to do so. However, I've noticed that people with top physiques can wear almost anything and get away with it, and some are called good dressers with good taste in clothes, with little effort.
Talk about extra incentive.

It is because clothes are made from patterns for people with good physiques, not for pudgy people.
hahah i may be late on noticing this, but i enjoyed the topic title change lol!
as for having a good physique/clothes looking better- i notice that guys who are REALLY, excessively buff tend to just look overweight with clothes on (a lot of them aynways). unless of course they are wearing skin tight shirts.

Actually buff guys usually *are* fat. One typical strategy is to carry extra fat in order to build muscle. You probably don't need to do this to get buff, but it's one tried-and-true method.
If you see a buff fat guy, chances are that; 1. He's fat with some muscle mass, 2. He's in the middle of 'bulking'.
If you want to gain muscle mass, you have to get a healthy amount of fat in your diet. There is no way around this. However, a well built physique at the near end of the muscle building process, for many people won't really have signs of visible fat at all.
As far as myself, I've gotten back into the full swing of my workout and lifting regimen. I plan on getting back into boxing as well since that opportunity has presented itself, but it's REALLY snowing a lot out there recently, so I hope I can be timely with it.

I have fat friends who dress really well, better than I do, so this is not always true. Where I live, having good clothes is more important than having lights for some people, and weighing 250+Ibs will not stop them.
However....I do like to wear small shirts because I like to show off my pecs. Not that they're BODYBUILDER HUGE or anything...but they stick out and they're ALL muscle!
Anyway, overall, I'm pretty happy with my weight and size, but I am trying to get better and lose this tiny piece of fat around my stomach (that's taking forever). I jog 45+ mins every morning when I wake up (except on weekends), more so for fun than for physical reasons.
My diet is pretty decent I think, though I guess it could be better. I drink only water, and as often as I can. Whenever I'm hungry, I turn to fruits and veggies instead of cookies. I make it a must to have breakfast everyday, usually a bowl of cereal. I avoid having huge meals, though if I really like what I'm eating, I can't help myself.
At least every other Friday, I usually "treat" myself, using by ordering General Tso Chicken or a few slices of pizza. I'm sure that's destroying me, but I don't want to stop. Giving up McDonalds in HS was hard...I don't want to give up Chinese too. :(
Anyway, current stats:
Age: 20
Weight: 138
Waist: 30 but I prefer to wear 34

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen a fat mannequin. *shrugs*

Yeah. Even at Fashion Bug Plus, the mannequins are skinny. I think they are slightly bigger than the average mannequin but they definitely do not represent the XXXX-Large customer base.
Does anyone have any updates as far as their workout regiments or working out at all? I've found a gym near where I'm staying, and I'm definitely pumped about that. When I get a chance, I'm going to post some detailed stats and progress (well, you'll see what I mean), and you guys can and should do the same.
My workout regiment over the holidays is what I like to call the Eggnog Lift.
Talk to me in the new year.

I'm finally getting a gym membership (actually as one of my Christmas presents!) and so I'm ready to go head on over after school everyday, or close to it. Mmmm no more working out in my garage! I guess I'll post "stats" sometime later

Haha, so true
I finally got to use my membership yesterday and I plan on going again today, or possibly just jog around town. Probably even both because I can't stand treadmills because I like going somewhere while running instead of feeling isolated on a track like a hamster. Still haven't maxed out yet so I can't post any numbers, but I'll probably do that in fitness class as soon as Christmas break is over.
When I get a chance, I'm going to post some detailed stats and progress (well, you'll see what I mean), and you guys can and should do the same.
Remember when I said this? Yeah so basically one of my New Years resolutions is to minimize the amount of time I sit on my ass as much as possible. I don't know about you guys but I find it pretty pathetic considering I have a sit down job and I come home and sit down some more for several hours. It especially hit home when my girlfriends dad had to have surgery for what basically is long story short physical strain, wear, and tear caused by him being overweight and sitting around all day.
I don't think I'll have any problems with the weight part but I definitely could devote more time to being active, so without further ado, I'm going to post my 'stats' here for basically my own morale and recording. Every two weeks I'm going to update these stats and I really implore you guys to join in, it's really a great feeling to see improvement.
Stats are approximate at this time.
Week 1
Weight: 160 lbs
Bench: 145 lbs (I've always been really bad with bench press so I want to start off real low)
Squat: 185 lbs
Pull Ups: 10
Curl: 40 lbs
Deadlift: 145 lbs
We'll see how it goes. I implore you guys to join me and do the same.
