Marching is a very good way to build leg muscle. It's also a cardio workout as well. I replaced squats with marching in fact because squats made my knees feel weird.

I don't think marching can really hold a candle to the effectiveness and benefits of doing Squats to be honest. But whatever works for you.
Yeah, when it comes to pure benefits or muscle building, marching has absolutely nothing on squats. Sorry man.
