WHAT VIDEOGAMES ARE YOU PLAYING RIGHT NOW?

Posts

Just finished my first trip through Human Revolution. It felt like it was about 75% Deus Ex, 20% Metal Gear Solid and 5% other. All in all, not a bad mix! At first, the third person stuff really turned me off, the load times on the 360 were kind of brutal, and I was a little put off by not being able to sneak past a boss/kill them with a code phrase, but the deeper I got into the game the more it grew on me, and the new "conversation battles" were a lot of fun, and not as hit or miss as the interrogations in LA Noire could tend to get, in that you could actually recover from an error or two instead of just having a whole line of questioning go dead on you.

Despite the fact that the team really seems to wear their admiration for MGS on their collective sleeves, it is also clear that they really loved and understood what made the first Deus Ex such a great game.

One of my only remaining complaints would be that a couple of the areas that are said to take place in certain locations really just let you see the inside of the complex you're infiltrating and maybe a digi-matte of some cityscape in the background. I would have liked to have more hub zones to explore. Another complaint would be that at least the first boss fight almost punishes someone running a strict hacker/stealth build, though luckily I was carrying some decent weapons at the time (planning on trading them in for more credits to buy praxis kits with... I was technically the biggest gun-launderer in Detroit - emptying the DPD armory out and offloading it to neighborhood arms dealers for fun and profit) which made it kind of a breeze. At least one of the boss fights (as far as I discovered on my first play through) could be won without actually firing a single shot AT the boss. Getting to use the environment greatly made up for being stuck in the battle in the first place.

My advice to anyone who doesn't really want to worry about boss encounters would be to save inventory space for the revolver. Fully modified, that thing is amazingly well suited for mauling bosses/mechs/groups of heavily armored commandos... you name it.

The second boss is quite hard, being zapped around and that bitch teleporting everywhere.
You can kill the second boss with a total of two well placed mines. She's the one I beat without firing a single gun at.

You can also survive the electrified floor with a quick painkiller to buff your health and some jumping, especially if you have the improved jump.
I wonder if you can knock bosses unconscious instead of killing them. I never tried. I had a tranquilizer rifle in my inventory most of the game and only fired the thing twice since it was more fun to sneak up and headbutt somebody.
I didn't try it either. It might be possible, but I'm pretty sure the game would still treat them as being killed. There was one side quest that I completed using a pair of non-lethal multiple takedowns. The dialog with the quest giver treated it as though I'd actually killed the team instead of just disabling them.

I actually didn't get into using takedowns that much until I was a couple of missions in. Once I realized that my last bar of energy recharged, giving me unlimited takedown potential without having to carry a backpack full of power bars, I barely touched an actual a weapon for the rest of the game.
I takedowned the shit out of everybody, dawg. I totally loved the thematic implication of two dudes talking about soda or whatever the fuck and some dude out of nowhere just rolls up on them and beats the shit out of both of them.

Or my favorite; *tap tap on shoulder*, dude turns around

I like the one where Jensen tricks one guy into punching his own buddy before putting him down.

I also had a couple of funny situational ones. I screwed up, a guy saw me and went for the nearby alarm. I sprinted after him and put him in a sleeper hold. I also found it funny that the enemies seem to try to "tap out" when Jensen is choking them. It is almost as if there is some Belltower guard who is known to go around choking his comrades for fun. Choke. Tap tap. "He's not stopping! Oh crap, that's not Bill!"... unconscious.

I do have a painkiller, and I even reloaded back a safe to get some items in a room before hand. Sadly, no improved jumping.

But, there's no cheat trainers no workie, for steam for me. Seems to work for other people though.

Plus there is a weapons cache box you can stand on to avoid the electric floor, but of course Ms Fastbitch seems to think that'll be a easy way to get me anyway.

Another alternate is use a zapper and then quickly use a pistol or heavy gun to take her down quickly.

All Blacks Rugby Challenge or overseas it would be called Jonah Lomus Rugby Challenge. Great game.
I was expecting something else, judging from the title :D Made me smile.

In other news, since I recently upgraded my PC a little bit, I am now able to run PS2 games on emulator with around 50-60 fps most of the time, so I can finally play FF X and Tales of the Abyss. Played a little of both, then picked TotA to be the first game I'll play. I liked Luke more than Tidus, and was feeling like a Tales game, since after I reinstalled my PC, I kinda forgot to back up my save from Tales of Phantasia, and I don't feel like playing 15 hours through the same content before I reach the point where I had the save.

Not to mention, Tales of the Abyss looks gorgeous, kinda reminded me of Valkyria Chronicles, especially the menus. And being able to see/avoid monsters on the field is so much better than the random encounters in Phantasia. Playing PS2 games on the keyboard will probably be a little rough though, since there are more buttons than in PS1 games, and in Quick time events, it's hard to hit the right keys, not to metion analog movements (possible with mouse? I dunno). But I'll make it work somehow, it's worth it.

I kinda feel bad about playing those games for "free", but in my country, I can barely get some of these old hits, and when I can, they are usually used versions, which means I wouldn't be supporting the developers, only giving my money to some random guy. They should have released Tales of Vesperia on the PS3 outside Japan, they would get my money for that. And Tales of Graces F is still pretty far away...

So as far as RPGs go, I'm golden for quite some time with the new PS2 possibilites, and since I will be working day and night till january, I won't get that much gaming time anyway, especially when I mix epic long rpgs with starcraft 2 multiplayer, and with Skyrim on the way.... Oh bother, enough gaming for a lifetime right there. Days really need to be like 10 hours longer or something.

EDIT: Heh, scratch that, I overestimated my PC, Tales of Abyss does slow down quite a bit in some areas, which kills the atmosphere for me. Combat is fine and fluid though... Anyway, moving on to Tales of Eternia.

Boob stab.

Also played Dead Space 2. Oh god it's fricken awesome, bump in the night type game, I don't wanna play alone. :( Not really scary, but sometimes it is.

Now playing the witcher 2, downloading new patch.
Been trying out Dead Island.

Many reviewers seem to not like it too much, but I don't see why. Though unlike most times, IGN video review was spot-on this time. This game is great. There is nothing more satisfying than smashing a zombie skull with a steel pipe or slicing off arms and legs, all in first-person view. Kinda feels like Oblivion meets Fallout 3 meets Borderlands meets Left 4 Dead, only with less depth and more zombies. And who doesn't like to kill zombies. I also like how the weapons get damaged, you can see the damage, and have to constantly look for new ones/repair some good ones.

I find myself charging up to a zombie, jumping in the air, kicking him in flight and then slicing his head off when he's lying on the ground.

Very cool game, and kinda relaxing, in a disturbing kind of way :D
