IN THIS TOPIC I BRIEFLY COMMENT ON EVERY VIDEO GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED.

Seriously, who thought that controller design was a good idea? It was terrible.
Honestly, the N64 controller, at least to me, was the only controller I ever got great at racing games (F-Zero X) and FPS on. I have a 360 now but I can't stand playing an FPS with the controller.

You actually like playing FPS on the N64 controller?
To me it just feels weird not having a stick to move and a stick to look
Chrono Trigger
SNES, Playstation, DS
There's something mystifying about Chrono Trigger, isn't it? Even if you're not the greatest fan of the series, you can't deny that it's one of the most popular and beloved RPGs of all time, even for a Squaresoft title. I always thought the time traveling aspect of it was awesome and no RPG has tried to replicate it since, for good reason. CT just did it best.
Of course, I could go on and on about the characters, the music, the gameplay, everything. Really one of my favorite games. Story time; when I was younger I borrowed this game off my best friend and lost it. I feel bad because now the SNES version of the game is worth a lot of money.

Honestly, I like Chrono Trigger, but my biggest annoyance is the fact that every character in the entire game except Frog and Magus is boring and one-dimensional.
I think for the most part, having the majority of characters static in RPGs can be a good thing, and Chrono Trigger is a case of where it is a good thing.
Also, as a person who finds the characters in Chrono Trigger boring, can you please tell me which RPG's characters you find interesting? I'm genuinely curious.

Yuri from Tales of Vesperia is probably the best RPG hero ever. And for that matter, pretty much any character in any Tales game ever is interesting enough to me. They tend to have much deeper personalities than Generic RPG Hero #1287 and Plucky Female Sidekick Slash Healer, and they change significantly from the start of the game to the end.
IMO, characters should be fleshed out until they're real enough so that the writer can let them decide what happens (though I'm not much of a writer so take what I say with a grain of salt here).

Lucca? Really? Her entire motivation was "oh my god the world's going to be destroyed hundreds of years after I die! We should save it because we're RPG heroes and that's what we have to do to advance the plot!"

Hmmm ... maybe not Lucca, but Marle. You can't deny that her character had some depth.
For a 1995 title, Chrono Trigger had decent characters for its time. Nothing compared to FF6, though.
A game where you can replace the silent protagonist is . Too bad you can only do it when you're 80% done the game :I

Ah, but you miss my point, friend! Chrono Trigger is one of the few games that could get away with 'breaking the rules' on the long list of 'musts' of character development and all that because of how memorable and effective the characters were for the narrative of the game. Do characters need to be Shakespearian to be fun?
Streets of Rage 2
Genesis
Everyone has a certain association with certain games, and for me, Streets of Rage II is the Great Equalizer. I can go to almost anyone I know that's played video games and ask them 'hey dawg remember Streets of Rage 2?' and they'd go 'HELL YEAH'. This is one of my favorite games of all time, man! Two player is the best part; last year my roommate and I spent about three hours of the night trying to beat this game on two player without any of us getting a continue (or an outright game over, and that tends to happen on the level with the elevator with the enemies dropping down. You remember that? Hell yeah you do!) Out of all three of the games, this is the best one.
And the music was killer, man.

author=TooManyToasters link=topic=2836.msg54939#msg54939 date=1231604124This is a joke right? Chrono Trigger for depth > Tales of series combined.
