MAP DESIGN FUN #7: TIME TO TAKE THINGS IN A NEW, ODD DIRECTION!

Thanks to Neophyte, things are gonna be a lil bit different. Instead of working with just one chipset, let's do a whole theme shall we?
Anyways, I've been given permission to host MDF 7 (Whoo!) and since I'm a huge mother fanboy... Our topic is now... Trippy/Weird!
For example, here's a chipset I made of "Magicant" from Mother 1.

So get crackin' everyone!
Some examples (sadly, not the best ones) of how this chipset can be used:

Have fun everyone! ;D
I tried my best but there wasn't much to work with. I'm so used to a full chipset! I'd suggest next time to use a chip with a few more...features. Here you go:

Wow, I haven't played Mother 3 but I loved the original Earthbound. Magicant has changed so much...

Will be interesting thinking in the trippy feel that is the Mother games. :P Will update this post when I do my map.
Hey guys, this topic could be A LOT better if it didn't limit things to one chipset. I don't know how it's really your own design since they are all going to look similar and everyone is using the same chipset. It also limits the maker to just RPG Maker and none of the other ones like XP or VX. There's no originality here except using overlays and tints as workarounds.

There is so much more to map design than this. Having the freedom to design based on what the concept of a map is in your head is one of them. I would scrap limiting things to chipsets and just set it to THEMES. It allows more freedom and will make better products come out of it. I absolutely hate when you have to be set on a really bad chipset that somebody compiled. It sucks!

Just my 2 cents, because I know 90% of the community doesn't get into these things because of how limited they are.

I have hated every chipset posted here, so that is also why.

Neo, you have a very good point there. How about Mother in general as the theme?

Neophyte you are awesome. This.
I agree with the themes idea. That can totally expand into something everyone, in any maker, could use.

Mother as a theme may be a little constricting depending on how many Mother chipsets exist out there, though I haven't looked yet. How about Mother-style environments? (i.e. the trippy feel)

Sounds like a plan.
So what Neophyte is suggesting is that you can use programs like Photoshop to map your design out?
I would try this if there was a better chipset to use.

You can use any chipset that uses the theme. Thanks to Neo, things changed.

I prefered the DQ tileset. I want more retro map design events!
Did you actually make a map with it? I can't remember.

Yeah, I made a kobold shrine.

Oh right. I wanted to play the slots.

Since these little map topics aren't doing much why not try taking something out of Xenos Mapping competitions he held. Those were huge and always drew interest and plenty of great entrys?
Xenos Mapping competitions? I don't really remember those, can you tell me more about it?

I would really love some decent mapping topics/ Competitions. I'm also missing the 3 hours.

What is this?
In a continued effort to keep Game & Demo alive and thriving, I've taken it upon myself to try and bring back one of the forum's older community activities; the (rather self-explanatory) mapping contest! For those unfamiliar, the premise is quite simple; participants will create a game environment broadly based on the given theme, and following the appropriate deadline, submissions are to be played through, accessed, and eventually judged for quality and content by popular vote.

The Theme?
Not to tread into old territory, the setting for our work this time around is going go a a Mountain locale of some feasible variety. I consider such a subject to hold a very ambiguous conception, and as such, those participating will not be bound to any certain requisites. Your work may range from a glacial peak to a volcanic inferno; a mountainous highland to a precarious cliff formation.

Guidelines:

You may use any two-dimensional game engine that happens to be your preference, as long as your entry directly complies with the theme and may fairly be judged amidst the multitude of other submissions.
This must be a SINGLE MAP. This is a fairly self-standing facet, so be reasonable.
The map will need to be playable. This entails an uploaded Game Folder with a maximum file-size of approximately 10MB.
As made clear by the above, this means your map must be functional. The player must be able to traverse, explore, and (ideally) interact with it. No mockups.
MP3's, Overlays, effects, and events may be used, but they will be taken into account in the judging process.
The work may resemble a piece already existent in your various projects(s), but it may not directly be taken from such. Those who are caught are to be immediately disqualified.
On Sunday, June 8th, 5:00PM EST, the submission process will swiftly come to a close, and a committee of judges; Myself and whomever else is chosen as appropriate, shall access the top-three entrants based on a number of factors.

These include:
-Ambience and atmosphere.
-Playability & coherence.
-Aesthetic appearance.
-Function and navigability.
-Use of sound design.
-Originality/Uniqueness.
-Miscellaneous elements.

There is a minimum map size of 20x20 (320x320 pixels). There is no maximum, but consider that quantity shall not be taken before quality.
Note: It will be at the discretion of the judges whether an entry complies properly with the rules and guidelines; regardless of nominations!

Prizes
----------------------
First Prize: $30 USD.

Second Prize: $5 USD.
Prizes are available respectively by either PayPal transaction or mail. Please note that with the latter you shall be taking a risk!
Judges may enter the contest freely, but are not eligible for nomination nor prizes.
In addition, the judging committee shall provide a personal, comprehensive assortment of feedback for each and every map contributed. If nothing else, use this event to better your mapping prowess!----------------------

Judges:

BlindMind
Neophyte
King of Games
Kaempfer

That was the last one's guidelines, etc. Ofcourse we don't need a money prize to go with it.
If some of us are willing to pool some cash together I'd love to do that.
