PS, what's up with the 2007 RM2k3 remake? I discovered that too, but I didn't like it as much. It felt like a step down.
The new graphics were great though.

I agree--the chipsets were amazing. The interface and overall flow of the battles felt clunky and chaotic. The original interface looked halfway decent, this one just doesn't look and execute as well. Was it not made by DGuy?
bes game I evar played was Starless Umbra :)

It was just DGuy was a few years out of practice, plus the overall complaints about the old demo was stradegy. So he tried to implement more of that in the new battle system.
Everyone was too busy mocking his hilarious character art (CODPIECES/PUBIC HAIR) to notice the game.

No new list, but I found another cool English game on RPG-Atelier; Seekers of the Sun. Unfortunately, it's no completed game. I didn't found it in here, so I thought I should write it into this topic. (If anyone knows more about the whereabout of this game, please contact me. This game is one that has a incredible atmosphere, really one of the best I've ever seen.)

Seekers of the Sun itself is a very pretentious game. Lots of fancy custom systems and overly vague plot. Most of the time you're just wondering what you're supposed to do. It's nice to see just how far rm2k can go though!
I tried seeker's of the sun, it's not that good or anything <_<;
So that's where that one game took the cbs as well ...

And yeah I have no idea what I was doing or what my character was even saying. I just found it out after killing one guy and saying something about Genesis Seal whatever
Hero's Realm. It's so awesome, I must have done a million and two things in the first town before I even looked at my main quest and I enjoyed every second of it.

Having a signature is too mainstream. I'm not part of your system!

That game was released in 2004. Play a 2004 game and you will see what's better. I should have mentioned it, but I didn't. ;_;

Don't know what to do is going to so many RM games. Most of 'em are in this way, especially the old games (like Seekers of the sun, for real. If you ever played Velsarbor, it is the same. Ok, you know what to do, but there is no real story).
You mean if one of these games would be released today, they would be just a "standard" game like every other one? So far you are right. I often read in the German RPG Maker forums, they say the same. Unterwegs in Düsterburg was released in 2002 (or one year later, I dunno the exact date), but it got many of the last "Goldener Deiji" (German RPG Maker award). I has itself "burned-in into the hearts of the gamers". But it has not one of these "awesome" features (I hate this word, because they all seem to keep down a good game on an own battle system, and an own menu, and special lighting effects... ).

Edit:
@Archeia_Nessiah:
The idea for Seekers of the Sun's CBS was taken from Chrono Trigger, I guess. Also, if someone else reads this, it's just my opinion that the named game is good. Nothing else.
@cilence, I played a lot of old RM games, the CBS is the same to this game I played that was using RTP graphics though. And I still feel that Tales of Suneria 2 is better overall :P I think Seekers of a Sun was just mumbling gibberish right now and the intro is almost exactly the same as the one game I Was playing, I wish I can remember the title. Also yes I played Velsarbor, it does a complex turn based system which is awesome (it's similar to ffx)

It's not that my standards are that high it's just seekers of the sun was just a big :|
Also Fenrir's Sonata. That one was pretty good and can still compete to today's standards if it was ever done
There's often a certain charm (for lack of a better word) in something that was produced early or to a different set of standards. I don't think From the Earth to the Moon would have been a successful story had it been published in 1965 instead of 1865, for example, but even though I encountered it well after I was introduced to science fiction I liked it.

The perception that every facet of a game has to be strong is lamentable, though. Particularly in an amateur game, it's all right to go whole-hog on one or two stand-out areas as long as you make your weak areas as unobtrusive as possible (admittedly far from a given).

Standards have risen. It used to be acceptable for a game to have one stand-out area whilst ignoring the others, but now people want every area of a game to be strong (or at least decent).

This is not entirely true. The thing is, you can "forgive" a game for it's weak points, if the strong points are well, strong. Let's say you have a game with a below average story but good battle/dungeon design, the creator decides to have many cutscenes almost making the game focus on the story. The author doesn't realize that his "gameplay" is the strong point, so we are left with people hating the game for it's story, and while the battles and dungeons were cool, they wish the story was more hookable or just shoved aside.

The ABL and NOTSMW comparison is a pretty bad example, considering you didn't even play NOTSMW (not to mention, they have different ways of story telling in completely different settings), and it's up to debate whether or not ABL had decent "gameplay".

I think you should stop looking at things mathmatically, and realize that it's more than just measuring a game based on how good their aspects are, but rather evaluating how they are handled and work together. See that's the problem, I would have enjoyed Sore Losers more if you didn't put your confusing/unclear story in the spotlight and actually made the plot simple while focusing on making the exploration + battles more indepth.

I agree completely that nostalgia plays a huge role in making the old good games seem like 'classics' (lol legion saga). But sometimes that's not always the case as some games can stand the test of time. Just to let everyone know I actually played Seekers of the Sun awhile back (2005 I think?) and I still thought it sucked. So cilence's defense for this game is moot, to me anyway.

I really don't want to ruin a perfectly good thread by starting another F-G created debate. Whatever reply goes forward, make another thread or something.
