IF YOU HAD TO MAKE THE NEXT SONIC GAME...

author=Darken link=topic=3768.msg75474#msg75474 date=1242573754I don't get the picture though I assume it's sort of negative. But I don't get why it would have to be so negative? Combining the "flow" that is always talked about in parkour and free running with the "flow" that I believe should be present in speed-based games. I guess the new Prince of Persia (Which I sort of referenced in my post) is also fairly similar, but I haven't played that one.author=Shinan link=topic=3768.msg75458#msg75458 date=1242564273
So yeah. I think a Sonic Mirror's Edge might be a good idea.
If speed-runs are what you're into then you can do that in pretty much any platformer - even Sonic Heroes.
It's just an example, it's really not hard to jump through the puzzles without having to stop for a second.

If you think switching from Sonic to someone else makes the gameplay less fun then that's kinda silly.
Why? I would like to be in control of a singular character with consistant abilities. Jumping through a set of puzzles is not the same as punching a block as knuckles flying to a platform as tails, running for 2 seconds as sonic punching more robots as knuckles, flying more with tails etc.
But I don't get why it would have to be so negative? Combining the "flow" that is always talked about in parkour and free running with the "flow" that I believe should be present in speed-based games.
Flow as in falling off high places all the time and reloading saves? It just sounds like one of those ideas where "OMG WHAT IF THE GRAVITY/PORTAL GUN WAS IN THIS AND THIS AND THIS" is rampant. Sonic the Hedgehog isn't a complicated forumula, make a platformer, speed it up by 10x, you're done. No need to take *inspiration* from Mirror's Edge. No stupid swords/werewolves/treasurehunting/kissscenes and especially having to switch between friends. It's not that Sonic Team isn't trying hard, it's that they're trying TOO HARD in the wrong direction.
To me the last great Sonic game was Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. I think they need to bring back Chao Garden, cause I remember how much I loved this damn little so much. Now Sonic Heroes I hated, Sonic and the Scret Rings made me give up hope forever, Shadow the Hedgehog I beared with. They need a graphically charged 2D Sonic game like what they did with Street Fighter 4. Bioware did good with Sonic with their RPG I heard. I would make a Sonic Adventure 3 frankly. They need the old VA back, if I hear Tails' voice again I might kill myself.
The Mega Drive titles were about level design. They captured a certain blend of simplicity, flow, exploration, and intuitive gimmicks, then wrapped in up in a bow of restraint. At some point, the bow was released, and all the elements pretty much splattered out. None of the newer titles could reclaim that magic because, even if they could gather the bits and pieces, the bow is gone so they just get in each others way. They couldn't blend anymore.
That's what happens when you make Sonic all about speed. Most of the actually interesting concepts require slow precision and patience, but when you're running at 72 mph, it becomes a chore to even stop and jump from platform to platform - you know, actual platforming. Other titles in the franchise had their own share of problems, such as copious amounts of linearity, but this is by far the most important one, and Sonic Unleashed the most recent and best example. (It even has the exploration and simplicity back in full force!) Most other "problems", especially some of the ones mentioned in this thread, are superfluous drivel

Do you see the similarities between this

The only new(er) games I don't have that much of a problem with is the Sonic Adventure games. I'll admit, they weren't that fabulous, the old Genesis platformers were still a hell of a lot better, but they were the closest to being okay.
I don't have a problem with all the extra characters; I love Shadow and Silver (even though I've never played the game Silver is in, he's still cool...and he has my favorite superpower: telekinesis, which makes his super badass)
Find a way to implement those newer characters into the 2D platformer-style games and I'm sure it would be a kickass game.
I honestly much rather prefer the new age Sonic's look. C'mon, it's cool looking.

As for making the next Sonic game, first I'd redesign sonic:

The whole Sonic 2 HD thing is being made.. Just not by Sonic Team. It was inspired by this picture someone on Deviant Art made.
Ok going to try take this topic seriously. Being a huge fan of the original Genesis/Megadrive Sonic games(Childhood favs and even today are a blast to play) I would just try going back to the basics, disecting each and every bit of those games and finding/applying all of what makes them great and combining them with the technology of today.
I thought the daytime levels for Sonic Unleashed were great fun and even at that speed never slowed down with frame rate or anything. I'd make the multiplayer racing on stages like that against someone with shit loads of multiple paths to run/jump/climb through.
For the single player I would make a very simplistic story like Robotnik kidnapped Tails and plans to use him in an attempt to capture Sonic when he tries to save him. Make some interesting boss concepts similar to Shadow of the Colossus and bring back the casino level as a bonus ending game stage with the credits rolling behind it.
The answer isn't as simple as STRIPPING THE GAME DOWN. There are already games like that. The Sonic Advance series; but they are pretty sub standard being that the sonic team is only capable of rehashing the old 2-d levels, only this time; with a colorful cast of furries characters!
I've never played a Sonic game but I think they're all about speed right?
So it should probably be a game about insane amounts of speed. Perhaps something like a simpler version of Mirror's Edge with Sonic. Sonic doing parkour on time-limited levels and going at insane speeds always blurring the details of the environment (though it should be colourful so that the player can tell distinctive features.
Some sort of bullet-time might be good but I think it'd be best if you could make the game without it. Perhaps some sort of hyperspeed instead that stops time while moving.
To make it accessible to the current generation of gamers it should be fairly forgiving and checkpoints should be everywhere (or alternatively it could go the Prince of Persia route and make the player unkillable, which could be a good idea if it was possible to make it make sense in-game).
The challenge in the game would be the time-trial modes as well a ring collecting. Alternate routes and certain speeds could give extra rings (perhaps the hyperspeed feature, when time stops as you're going insanely fast certain otherwise invisible rings would become visible and available to get)
I wonder if it would be a good idea to make the game on-rails so that you can only regulate the speed of Sonic (Fast, Insanely Fast and Hyperspeed). It would probably make it easier to control since I guess the biggest problem is how to convey the speed while still make it possible for players to feel like they're in control.
So yeah. I think a Sonic Mirror's Edge might be a good idea.
Sonic 1 was a very solid platformer, 2, 3 & CD had a lot more of speed, but they have the same formula. The two SMS titles are really slow paced...
I think you are making a mistake, but not only you, a lot of people. Is true that if you have played Sonic 15 years ago you will only rembeber the speed, but play it now! Check the levels, they are really complex, with a lot of paths. Are you running in every moment? The speed is limited to certain moments, and things like tubes and bucles are not playable, its only used in transitions. The rest is a pure platformer, like any other.
I think the main problem is that they are too centered in the Speed and graphics. Speed not means anything, in the original Sonic you were 95% of time in a normal platforming. Where is it in actual Sonic games? And the arcade and complex levels? Also, all the other characters and the non-platformer levels are crap... totally boring.

Yeah, but the various obstacles you roll through aren't the only fast part of the old games. Yeah, they were the fastest parts, but that's the beauty of the classic Sonics: if you were good at them or familiar with the stage, you could still move quickly through the slow parts, too. It's not to say that the game's only strength is speed, because it can be just as fun slowing down to figure out how to move on or explore an alternate route. The old Sonic stages were well designed because they balanced speed, platforming, and puzzle solving while still letting the player move quickly.
I'll admit, I haven't played many of the new Sonic games, so I don't know how well they recapture the essence of the old games. But the ridiculous premises and gimmicks behind them are so awful, I've never even bothered to check them out. The abysmal reviews I hear don't help things much. I'm usually willing to try something before assuming it's terrible, but I guess I've heard too many negative opinions to want to waste $40.

Rent them for less. At least Sonic Rush Adventure or Sonic Unleashed, as they appear to be the direction Sonic Team intends to head forward with. Unless you're into mercilessly abusing glitches and bugs, though, avoid Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) like the plague.
i am reliably informed that sonic 2006 is hella fun to play on drugs because you stop caring how shitty it is. it becomes more of a contest of who can wipe out in the most ricockulous way.
If I had to make the next Sonic game it'd have mario in it.i bet they'd be fighting huh ?? what do you think this is ?? VGDC ??
...oh wait.

I would do this.
Wow. I would
