YOUR GAME SUCKS
Posts
Dark Gaia: After six pages, the topic is allowed to change and expand; RMN is not that strict about staying on topic (in the design forums, at least). Just a heads-up!
Craze I call bullshit to like a 60% degree, but not fully.
I am not saying all fantasy games have to be traditional "epic RPGs" or that science fiction games can't be in this genre.
But to say how sick you are of classic fantasy RPGs (specifically: Your Game Sucks) and then say (as you have said) that you "just don't like" science fiction games, and never play any of them (I think the games of mine you've played the most are the two fantasy game I ever released) is kind of...BS.
It reminds me of my clients at work, constantly demanding that I make an abstract shorter, but include more information.
Of course this topic is not just about what kinds of games Craze likes to play, but about a general genre oversaturation problem, which I agree is evident.

Metal Gear in most cases overuse the cutscenes in most cases in order to show anime cliched nobody outside Japan cares about.
author=Dark Gaia link=topic=3818.msg79646#msg79646 date=1244706614Lets not.. Seriously.
However, some games DO need cutscenes. Let's look at Metal Gear Solid...
Maybe i'm easy to please, but I like just about every setting there is out there. Fantasy, Sci-fi, post-apoc., you name it.... Though one setting that would be great to see in RM games that is very rare to see: PIRATES! I mean, sure there are pirates in tons of games, but i have yet to see a pirate THEMED game round here (maybe i'm not looking hard enough). Though I also am guilty of sticking to the usual themes, if I ever DO end up finishing my game ('bout 3 years?), I wanna work on a pirate epic. Also, another theme that is horribly ignored is the ancient middle eastern one, like in the bible times. Ever read the bible? Constant wars and shit going on there and stories of heroism and all that. And yet, ignored in the game making community.
Anyways, there's my wall of text that cost me 2 cents (Get it? :)). Goddamn, I'm too lazy to do proper paragraphs...

The truth is, people like games likes FF7, or Chrono Trigger, or Tales of Symphonia, and they want to make a video game as cool as those. Now, obviously, games like these have teams of anywhere from 10 to 100 people working on them, and an independant RPG is going to have a hell of a time keeping up.
But with enough hard work, sweat, blood, pain, anguish, tears, long nights without sleep, caffeine, more pain, spriting, violence, and self-loathing, you can use RPG Maker to make a truly sweet, epic game.
I loved playing Wilfred the Hero, but it felt cut off. The story's not finished, and it never will be, and that makes me sad. To make a story as enthralling as a good book in an RPG, it has to be fairly long, so it includes gameplay and isn't just a movie with crappy graphics.

Hope to play your game in 2040, if world war 3 isn't started.

World war 3 will probably be started because of all the pain, sweat, blood and violence put into my game.
I may just take your idea, Craze. Whenever I try to start something epic, it always fades away into nothingness. So I might try making a battle-oriented or otherwise small RPG or RPG-ish game.
I think the main problem with epic RPGs it is the need to make 'filler for the sake of length'. The idea that the entire game won't be 100% quality and that you're going to rush some parts. I think this was pointed out earlier in this topic when we weren't arguing about cutscenes, but I'll explain more in this example:
Say you have two major plot points:
-Villian burns main character's village down
-Main character meets villian for the 2nd time and realizes what he's up agasnt
Most highly ambitious people would say: "Okay, there's going to be 5 dungeons 6 towns, and 20 sideplot-quests between these points."
You get the idea of what I'm hinting at. I really wish there were more games that weren't based on this whole 'town->dungeon->town->dungeon->town' formula. Believe me, I'm one of the people who think FF7 should have just taken place entirely in Midgard (with maybe a disc taken out). But sadly, the developers were making a Final Fantasy game, where the traveling scale had to be increased.

I definitely agree with this. Although I can see the fun in making a huge world, and it does add a sense of realism to the game, it has to be done well. Most of FF7 was playing "Where in the World is Sephiroth?" through beaches and mountains and feudal Japan.
Throwing some wrenches in the formula is nice. Example, instead of you going through a dungeon, the town is attacked, and you have to fight through it. (Happens a lot in cutscenes, but not often in gameplay) Many great games can be reduced to a giant game of tag across the countryside, and there's no reason why the plot can't be going on at the same time.
hey guys, i only read the first page, but i can assure you my game is not an RPG and it is not very long, only about 3 hours maybe or something like that, so everybody play it :D
Please do not run around advertising your game in random threads, dethmetal. It's tasteless and against the rules.

There was a lot of Final Fantasy VII that was dead-space, but there were plenty of wrenches flying around after you got to the Cloud-Sephiroth-Zack storyline.
What do you mean?
*haven't played that part in a while*

Well, the first part of FF7 (after the eight-hour-awesome-intro-which-is-Midgar) is pretty much running around the world to every locale: farm town > harbor > beach town > mountain town > casino > glacier, etc. just chasing after Sephiroth. The plot does develop over this time, and the other characters get to show off a bit, but it is a little slow. After a whole bunch of this, the plot happens and the storyline gets real awesome real fast. But it takes a bit of goofing off around the world to get there, which is vaguely annoying.
By the way, is there anyone who doesn't love Midgar? The game is pretty damn awesome through that whole part, especially the last couple of hours and the motorcycles and whatnot.
(and I'd post the best part here except I can't figure out spoiler tags lol)
the reason i don't play short games much is just that, they're too short, i don't want to play something that'll i'll finish within the day, i want something that will keep me occupied for a few days. sure a short game can be good but it's just over way too quickly.

Hey, I have a proposition for you all. I want you to make some games that aren't epic RPGs.
Please.
...
I want you guys to start making small games.
...
I don't know which one of the goddesses sent you, but you've really hit the nail on the head. I don't care if it's a necro.
Unfortunately, I think it takes experience to learn this as I'm not sure I would have listened to you when I was 13 years old- the sad thing is I don't think anyone who hasn't already learned this lesson will actually listen to you.
