RMN3 APPROACHES JUNE 6TH! COMMAND?
Posts
Hey RMN3 is coming out in about a week or so (June 2nd6th). Or so that's the plan. There are some exciting things coming along in the pipeline that we are hoping to show off as soon as possible, but you'll have to wait!
So here's the big question: what is RMN3? It is the entire site remade. Some code was borrowed from the existing site, but not much. Following are some of the changes!
No Game Releases on the Forum
The biggest, most "controversial" change. The entire attitude of RMN3 has shifted to "Do more with the site". Posting games on the site and on the forum is wasteless data replication and I don't like that one bit.
Revamped "Comments"
I say comments in quotes because honestly, they are the same thing as forum posts just not in a forum topic. They look the same, act the same, and work the same. The forums and "discussion" sections on the site have the exact same look to them. Discussion sections also have pages just like a forum topic.
Gamepages Are Cool
One of the biggest pushes in RMN3 was to improve the game hosting. RMN3 supports multiple users per game, which has been asked about since the first version of the site. You are able to attach other users in either a developer, assistant, or tester role. Developers get full access to your gamepage just as you would.
Unfortunately, I have to cut short some of the gamepage customization features I wanted to implement. In the future, you will be able to attach custom CSS to your gamepage that is applied to every page within your gamepage (blog, image gallery, etc).
I HAVE ALL THIS COOL STUFF
Users also have access to a Locker, which holds files. As your Makerscore increases, so does your Locker space. Everyone starts with a 10MB minimum and it increases after that. You are able to view other users' Locker and see the files they have uploaded. However, a user can opt for their file to be private which will make sure the file is not shown in the user profile. You are still able to link to it normally.
Game Subscriptions work again!
Currently game subscriptions are pretty much just favorites. However, with RMN3 you will be getting notices in your mailbox whenever a subscribed game is updated. As a game developer, you will receive a notice when someone comments on any part of your game.
I am worried that the flow of notices will become unbearable, but we'll have to see how that goes.
Just a Lot More Good Stuff
There are numerous things that just feel better about RMN3. The forum is an interesting spot because it is completely custom coded now to mesh in with the rest of the site. No more shit just working funny from the forum. There are no more crazy AJAX popups. Site messages are easier to see and much fancier. The staff has the ability to pin items to the frontpage of the site, so we can more easily highlight events, games, and so forth.
What's the Catch?
The catch is that it is coming fast and not nearly as tested as I would like it to be. There is a good chance some parts will be broken or not work as nice as it should. I apologize for this, but there is actually a reason for pushing things out so soon. And really the best way to test is to force unwilling participants!
A few things might not feel polished. But after the initial RMN3 release, I am going to continue to further update the site at a much better pace than RMNv2 was.
EDIT:
Delayed because I can't code fast enough and there was a ton to do.

Remember when you said that some of the upcoming changes you had would crush my dreams? Well, I don't see any dream crushing going on here. These updates and changes look like they're going to be the best stuff to happen in a while. Not just saying that either.
As far as the 'controversial' change; well, I'm personally more concerned about the end result; if more people are playing and commenting, and discussing games, and the 'community' aspect isn't lost, the change is fine by me. Time will tell if it'll actually work or not.

You know, WIP, I've been meaning to ask.
What kind of courses did you take to gather the coding experience you now possess?
I.e. What kind of training imbued you with the ability to grace us with RMN3?

(Saw this coming, but glad you made an official announcement! Also, I think he is self-taught, Chaos.)

Also, I think he is self-taught, Chaos.
If that's the cause, I'd be incredibly impressed.
Activate force fields! Prepare the stasis fields! We're going into hibernation for approximately 10034567234.567 seconds! I am not going to take chances with those damned insects!
Edit: Wait a minute, makerscore=free pass to waste bandwidth. Prepare to upload every old game including cancelled demos after the hibernation phase is over!

This gives me a legit excuse to upload a bunch of screenshots like I've always wanted to but always been to lazy to do.
Also I might re-post Pimp and Last Day for archival purposes. A couple of other things might make it up two.
...
Although, I honestly don't know what I'd do with the locker space...

Finally.
I will make good use of RMN3. Every single part of it.
It took you a half hour to type that!?
I have a habit of viewing the Online List when new topics come up to see who's jumping in. I noticed that Neophyte started posting about a half hour before he actually posted. Just a silly little observation.

@Feldschlacht IV: Are you watching him or something? O_O
Edit: Oh woops.
To ideally add something of value: I was not particularly impressed when I originally saw/heard of the ideals behind RMN3 early last year, and I really wasn't for quite a while. In fact, I hated them. But the vast amount of development and progression I've seen has truly won me over, and I've been eagerly anticipating it for a while now. Everything about it is sleek and fresh, many of the design ideas are something truly unseen before, and I pretty much can't wait for it to launch!
I do this too, at least in times of low activity.
THAT'S RIGHT I'M WATCHING ALWAYS WATCHING
