You naysayers are all lame. This game is fucking amazing. =[
Are you serious?
Aside from little things that distinguish it from your average RPG (ie the ability to jump around and do Mario Bros. style things all the time) Mario RPG is pretty much garbage. It's way too easy and has too few redeeming qualities - if it were at least funny or clever (like earthbound) or had an engaging storyline (like insert RPG I like that shall not be named for fear of causing an even stupider argument) it might not be crap. For me it had like three memorable parts to it:
-the really abstract and trippy temple with Belome in it where you buy the fortunes and go through different paths
-Culex and the weird sort of symbolism between typical Nintendo character/typical Square character reconciling and basically saying "even though this is the last game we'll collaborate on, we made some awesome gamz in our time together so let's just remember that"
-the battle with Bowyer where he disables certain buttons... very creative
I guess the boss battle with Birdo was good for me since it showed how fucking insanely hot that pink furry bitch is. I think I creamed myself just writing this post...
Wow, that's passion.
I thought that story was well executed, the graphics well used, the battle fairly innovative, the amount of secrets and extras great, and the light heartedness welcoming.
Compared to other RPGs of the SNES era, I'd definitely put it up there. Not as good as the top three, but as good as everything else that was good.
On a side note, I found Earthbound incredibly boring.
also, besides Cop Killa, who posted afterwards, who are these naysayers?

I was wondering this too actually - I think Blindmind knows it sucks so he predicted someone would come in and say so.
I'll respond to just one more thing - as for the battle being "innovative", I really REALLY don't think that "push a button at the right time" or "mash y as much as you can" constitutes innovation.
edit: oh and thinking earthbound is boring is just unforgivable, even for a fellow canadian
Super Mario RPG was a good SNES RPG, but that's about it. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga basically beats the shit out of it in almost every way. It was built on timed attacks and defense and they're a fundamental part of gameplay while Mario RPG is where they're more tagged on. If they were removed from Mario RPG, the game wouldn't change much but if they were removed from Superstar Saga it would need a huge overhaul for the battles to actually work.
Plus Superstar Saga has a 'Stache stat. You don't beat that.

I was about to start into an epic adventure, and do the first addition to this topic (64 images), until I realized that in order to do it through image shack, I will literally have to click on EVERY image, and get the url code that way. Sorry guys, but that was a HUGE loss of motivation, so I will be doing it a bit later.
Photobuckets.

Not only did Square successfully re-imagine the Mario universe in the form of an engaging RPG experience, they did it with superb creativity, addictive mini-games and astonishing visuals.
As for being "Clever"; exactly what standard are you holding it to? As made pretty clear by Canuck's post, humor is mostly a totally subjective thing. No, the story-line isn't particularly complex or compelling, but it isn't really meant to be. The dialogue is consistently cute and has a genuinely humorous attitude.
Likewise, it's pretty easy to look back more than twelve years later and denounce the originality of the battle system, but honestly, can you name off another game at the time that actually had that level of player engagement? I mean, I agree that Superstar Saga perfected the formula a tad, but I'm fairly convinced that it was an innovative inclusion at the time of SMRPG's release!
I agree with GRS. SsS's I and II owned. As for SMRPG, never played it so I couldn't say.
(how's THAT for stupid abbreviations Darken!)

Well, if we are going to abbreviate it Relyt, it would be SMRPGLOTSS

Addictive mini games? Like... go down the waterfall and collect green coins? Or "guess which hand of mine has the red ball and if you're right you get a rotten mushroom (gross!)"? There weren't really that many mini games period, I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about, unless you're counting the four rooms in Bowser's castle (the other two were annoying as shit but I'll concede that was a pretty cool part of the game). I'm really just asking for clarification here.

hey, i remember loving the shit out of that waterfall thing. The one where you stomp on the goombas was awesome, the one where you try to successfully "jump" multiple times on a single enemy was great (beating 50 jumps was HARD), the yoshi racing was also excellent. There's alot about this game to love.

Just to clarify, the jumping wasn't really a minigame, I think that was just the Super Jump ability and the number of consecutive jumps was allowed to go insanely high.
The premise of the Yoshi race was kind of cool (alternate buttons to the music etc) but in execution it just didn't turn out to be that fun, and I think most people relied on being lucky to win that one.
Maybe you guys can tell but I don't feel that strongly about how much Mario RPG sucks, or at least not so strongly to ruin a perfectly good thread, so I'll stop. My main complaint is that it's so unchallenging, and an RPG that's really easy is basically a movie, and a movie without a good story (right as Blindmind may be that it isn't "meant" to be good) is hardly a good movie. So in short, wahh wahhh I hate an RPG that lots of people like. fin.
I guess I should probably explain what happened to this topic:
I had taken quite a deal of screenshots, and I had tried to make an update (as seen earlier in the post) until after waiting for a ton of images to upload, it turned out that the system for direct url's was incredibly tedious. I then declared I would do the update at a later time.
Well, around that later time, my computer was sluggish, my internet card would randomly disable itself (requiring a restart to fix), and my computer would just freeze at random. I backed up everything, and formatted my computer, installing a fresh copy of Windows XP to it.
It seemed like at first everything was back to normal and fine, however, the problems all came back in a rush. I got pissed off, and used my laptop's original restore disk to format and go back to shitty Vista again.
Unfortunately, due to my anger, I forgot to back up the screens the second time, and sadly, I lost everything. Now, obviously this is a huge loss of motivation to say the least.
So to anyone who may have been looking forward to this, it won't be happening any time soon. Perhaps one day I will try again.
