THE STRAIGHT UP BEST FINAL FANTASY

EVERYBODYCan we get an explanation as to why it spells the end of the topic?

Dear narcodis,
I think FFX has the third best gameplay. Behind Tactics and VI. I (like you), like the battle system better than in any other FF, and for me the battle system is a huge part of gameplay for RPGs.
Always yours, (although you never call)
canuck.
ps: I reread your first post, and it seems we agree about tactics and VI. Soul mates?

I thought I posted this already, but I guess not. Final Fantasy Tactics is the best in both categories, and that was even before it got a proper translation on the PSP.
Final Fantasy Tactics. Story and Gameplay = <3
Final Fantasy 7 has pretty good minigames and a story, but gameplay wise, the battles can be boring specially those animations.
Final Fantasy 6, well, I liked the intro and the magiteks and all that. Gameplay wise I haven't gotten that far yet. Have to finish it someday
FF8 well, I Guess the concept is nice but it didn't really stood out to me that much.
FF9 never played it.
FF 10 ...I played it, I hated Tidus btw, Gameplay....well I guess is ok. Story, not interested.
FF 12 Gameplay is pretty cool but easily lost, Vaan should die, they should've made Ashe or Basch (?) as their original protagonists you control as first planned!
FFTA and FFTA2, do not like sorry. Those two just bored me despite that I'm a huge tactics fan =w=
Overall, FFT. Ramzzzaaaaa *cries tears*

Final Fantasy 6 for story/characters. It keeps drawing me back in for replays. Lots of people love FF7 for its characters/storyline, but I have just never connected with it. I find Cloud incredibly boring. Cue flaming. ;)
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for gameplay. God damn that game is fun, I have more than 350 hours logged on my save file.
I've never really played Tactics for more than 5 minutes, so I can't pass judgement on it. And I have yet to look into A2.

If by gameplay you mean just the battle system, then most likely X-2 or XII. But if by gameplay you mean sidequests, minigames, menu system, skill progression and battle system then I suppose it'd have to be either IX, VI, VII or X-2.
My personal 'Best' would be IX.
In IX there was a lot to do - minigames, sidequests, card collecting and playing, skill progression, hidden secrets ahoy! It was a pretty full-on fun-filled game and an absolute joy to play. Sure, your characters weren't as customisable as in V or X but it was fun to try and get all the skills. The story and characters were really good, too.
Story wise I'd have to say VI. It wasn't just a story, it was involving tale, touching on themes that, at the time of its release, were quite controversial and just not done. From suicide to teen pregnancy, it touched many bases, but didn't stretch itself too thin. It also had great characters, each having a real history and playing a major part, but none overpowering/overshadowing the others. Add to this an engaging villain and you've got a winner.

Story: FF6, 7, 10 and 12. I agree about the politics in FF12. Realistic, sophisticated and interesting in a way that no other FF game has managed. FF6 and 7 have a special place in my heart, just loved the characters and plot as well as the fact that both are supported by great, albeit, hugely different villains. FF10's storyline was both original and well executed but was let down by a poor cast in my opinion (Even the best plot fails when the characters involved are wankers). Also, I found it quite dull gameplay-wise.
Gameplay: FF5 I'm normally a plot junkie but was perfectly willing to ignore this tapestry of clichés and archetypes for the job system, which made grinding an absolute blast. FF12. Just liked the dungeons and monster-hunting in FF12. Also didn't mind gambits to be honest, you have the option of ignoring or using them as your own personal preferences dictate, so that's all down to the player.
Overall favourite: FF7. Almost purely for nostalgia. The game that turned me on to RPGs.
Also: Wish I could play tactics. Never released in Europe...

I remember a few years ago on another message board, someone described FFX-2 as a training program for future drag queens/trannies. I thought that was funny.
Well, I guess it's funny if you've been around lots of gay people. In my previous profession, I was surrounded by gays so I get the reference.
I.e. - A game where the heroes are strong women that gain different abilities by changing outfits = gay, gay, gay.

Best FF for story: FF7
Best FF for gameplay: FF12 (real time is the shit)
They pretty much are. Vaan has all of five lines in the game after they join. ;P

Out of FFIV, FFX and FFXII I'd go with FFX as it has the most memorable story line out of the three, it's random battle thing was the only annoyance which was reduced by playing Dragon Quest around that time.
FF1 has the most replay value <3
I remember a time where everyone you'd talk to would say that 7 was indisputably the best and to think that 6 was better was just nuts. Either times have changed or this forum is full of people with super enlightened taste like mine. Anyways I like 6 the most but I haven't played tactics so I can't say whether it's the best or not.
FF7's story is so asinine... mostly the subplots and random character development-related shit but even the main story is a bit silly. Like for the first half of the 1st disc it's not even clear at all why it's rational for the party to be following Sephiroth. They kind of forgot to put the plot in.
