The "best" Final Fantasy all comes down to personal perspective.

If their were really a best one it would probably be Final Fantasy VII because of how popular and high selling that game has and is the most highly regarded of the series? You could argue/debate which is or isn't but what's the point, not everyone will agree with what you like and vice versa.

BTW I think Final Fantasy IX is my favorite for overall appeal and that the game was just enjoyable throughout.

VI for story, TA2 for gameplay.
Tactics for the best mix of the two.

I think this is pretty close to my opinion, although FFT seemed much better when I first played it than when I tried replaying it years later. It's hard to return to the game afterwards, and like Xenogears it seems a bad translation really hurt a good story. At least FFT wasn't as rushed in its second half, however.

Also, I recently finished FFV for the GBA, and I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the story. The game is good primarily for the job system, but it also does really well arranging the familiar cliches to tell an interesting story that kept my attention. By the time I reached World 3 and the bad guy was blowing the shit out of everything, it actually got a reaction out of me. Maybe not as much as FFVI, which took the same idea to a bigger level.

I blame load times. Fuck all those camera sweeps and pans when some random fight against a tumbleweed starts. It takes half a minute from the start of a random encounter just to run away from it. Wandering anywhere takes ages because of this.
Speaking of VI, I've been replaying it and I can't figure out Blitzing for the life of me. Even though I hit LEFT RIGHT LEFT A, it still does nothing and I get Doom Fisted to death. Could someone explain how to do it timing-wise?

Also, that game has some of the best music in the series. (It's 2nd to FF1. OH YEAH.)

This is a big reason. Also that the ATB gauge takes forever to fill up. It successfully makes the battle aspect of the game excruciatingly boring (it had this in common with VIII).

The story also starts nice in the sense that it's meaninglessly referencing past Final Fantasies (for no reason other than nostalgia it seems), but then it turns into the same sort of "You are not who you think you are, you are artificial etc." sci-fi esque storyline. The characters are also flat as hell and seem more like concepts for characters than fully fleshed out characters. .

It has a lot in common with XII in that the first 3 hours make it seem like the game is going to just be phenomenal, and then all the reasons that made those first 3 hours fun fizzle out and what your left with is bordering on mediocrity, but usually less.

One thing about FF9 that always put me off - pathetically easy boss fights UNLESS you want to steal every item each boss has. If so then some of the boss battles turn from 5 minute cakewalks into half an hour of tediousness. Often I had to HEAL THE BOSS so that he didn't die before I snatched everything. Being a completionist it drove me nuts. Furthermore there is that one boss (a Hill Gigas?) whose final item is absolutely impossible to steal. I spent an hour trying to get it. Imagine having to constantly choose defend with everyone and steal with just one person, sometimes pausing to recast Float or heal. Imagine doing this for a whole hour. In the end I failed getting the item. Which happened to pop up in a store an hour or so later. Fuck.

I agree about the story, it is very weak, the worst in the series in my opinion. For most of the game the party just wanders around the world visiting new locations without any real purpose. It's not like FF7 where you knew from the moment you left Midgar what you had to do (trail and catch Sephiroth). The events are not really connected to each other. Also, the main antagonist is incredibly shallow and simply... not antagonizing.

Load times... please don't remind me about THAT.

Assuming you're serious, I'll tell you.
Click Blitz. Finger dealie points to Sabin. This is your cue to input the command.
You can take as much time as you like to press the first button. From then on, you have about 2 seconds to do the next button, and then next, and so on until you press A.

So after the cursor points to Sabin, press Left. Then Right. Then Left. Then press A.

You have unlimited time between presses. You can wait ten minutes before you push the last one and it will still connect.

Oh yeah the waiting for the battles and slow ATB were the only things I didn't mind about that game. They were fucking idiotic long. Like when testing the game how would you not notice that, I know it was like a homage to the games of old, still.

Another thing is I wanted to see more of the Tantalus group in the game, Blank, Marcus and them, they were cool characters and the fact that you couldn't get Alexander as a Summon. Not as many side quests as the other games either.

Although my fav game for nostalgic reasons is Final Fantasy VII I still think IX was the best in the series as an overall package. Or maybe I just need to replay it since I haven't in some time.
Final Fantasy 4 for story (any version, even the '2' one was playable to the extreme) , and again 4 on the DS for gameplay - it had a better auto-battle system than 12 in there AND didn't kill it's playability with it. 6 comes a close second on both counts :)
the new one, dissidia for gameplay

12 for story

Just because a story isn't inherently amazing doesn't mean that it can't compel you and make you feel like you're a hero.
It's just that I've heard nothing but bad things about FF12's story.
