Trade ships or a castle under seige? What exactly do you mean by "raid"?
Top catacomb, earth cave, underwater ruins.
But only if the underwater ruins have some sort of neat gimmick like rising water levels with the tides so you can only get certain treasured at certain times.
catacombs if there are lots of nooks, crannies, and hidden objects.
Earth caves because they aren't TOO complex while still being great for hiding treasure.

Cities, ancient ruins, Washington, castles, planes between dimensions, and towers. Definetly towers.
Giant mechanical crabs on the other hand can fuck right off with sewers and generic caves. (mines are all right though)

Intricate Machine Stuff (like FF5 steam ship, and lots of other factory places)
Volcanoes
Ruins (if they're done right)
Can you attack its weak points for massive damage?

1) Sewer
NOTHING NEEDS SEWER DUNGEONS. EVER.
Mines are a personal favourite. I always thought the Narshe mines in FF6 were too small. I would have loved more exploration/lootable things/awesome mining-related puzzles in there. :)
Ditto about the sewers, can't stand them, not a fan of mines or caves either (unless they're either underwater or in space - then they're great).
The internet-based assumption that they are always filler.
Sewers are always fillered with crap.
BEST
1. inside the belly of the beast
2. volcano = fucking awesome
3. frozen tunnel
WORST
3. Earth cave
2. Castle ruins
1. Sewer

I'd like to a sewer town.
