WHAT MAKES STEREOTYPICAL JRPGS TERRIBLE?

I guess I disagree with this topic's premise. It seems to only exist only to bash a genre, which I don't find constructive. Plus, it's an overly broad and vague category. What, precisely, is a stereotypical jRPG? Final Fantasy? Breath of Fire? Dragon Quest? Suikoden? Xenogears? Star Ocean?

I like changes of pace (like bashing) - I always find it absolutely hilarious when RM* developers are try to talk and be constructive. Bashing is more my style, so I made this topic.

Also, I mean the RPG game that doesn't exist (except for that SO4 video). Maybe I just don't play enough games, but one problem with THE TERRIBLE GAME THAT SUCKS REALLY BAD AND IS 100% ANNOYING is that I see it mirrored in RM* games... but I can never find a game that is that bad commercially!

Maybe RM* games just absorb suckiness from a variety of sources and amplify certain aspects of mediocre commercial RPGs.

I watched that video. I have no idea how something like that gets produced. It is incomparably confounding that at no point during its creation nobody found something profoundly wrong with the product. Like, who is that made for? The only suitable audience I can think of is like, 3-7 year olds who might react on a base emotional level to the bright colors and funny voices.

Bad JRPGs are really just bad for the same reason anything else is bad; ineffective, poorly considered design. Most creators lack a sense of objective thought and thorough reasoning, which makes it hard to create anything other than garbage. I can think of no finer examples than Star Oceans 3 and 4.

Also, why do the characters look as if they are bad cosplays of what one might imagine the actual characters to look like auguughh it is just so bad all around

Karsu and I have been talking about this for a while now. We pretty much agree that the worst part about bad jRPG-derived RM* games is that they have no substance - we don't care what is going on or about your races because there's nothing to care about except Odin and Bahamut the Stereotypes. We can predict your entire story before it even happens. This is okay in I AM MARIO LET'S SAVE THE PRINCESS, but when you're telling an epic there should be at least a few WTF OH NO parts that are different and exciting.

We're not saying BE ENTIRELY ORIGINAL (Hell no, steal all you can folks!), but when you have an amnesiac chosen one it tends to get stale unless you're playing The Witcher Enhanced.

I think it's more of a "been there, done that" idea than stereotypical RPGs actually being objectively terrible (what in the world is a stereotypical jRPG anyway?)

Self depreciation/self loathing sucks and is a symptom of insecurity and it also sucks. Take pride in everything you do.

I don't know if you're saying that to both of us or not, but I'm as full of pride as they come.
I mean that towards AznChipmunk. Not to him perse, but to his statement. I KNOW you know you're the shit, Craze, haha.

What? I don't get it.
It just seemed like a statement that was downplaying the notion that people can take a hobby (in this case, RPG Maker) with any degree of seriousness.
Clearly, I said that RPGMaker IS serious business.

Come on, you cannot tell me you wouldn't expect someone to think you're being facetious? Of course, as I don't want to derail the thread, I didn't mean an attack towards you, the attitude that 'RPG Maker is dumb to take with any degree of seriousness and/or pride' attitude is dumb and part of the reason why the community doesn't end up with better results. I thought your post was a mirror of that attitude.

Sorry, didn't mean to offend, misinterpret, or derail!

What the hell does this even mean? It can't mean what I think it means, so why don't you elaborate for us?
