OVERSEXUALIZATION OF FEMALES IN GAMES

Okay. Wait, what? What happened to this thread? Can't people respond to something normally?
One chance. I'll give this topic one chance to get back on track.
a) revengasweet, meh_ch - revenga started it and maintained it, meh facilitated it. You two are pretty much responsible for this thread's derailment. Not a peep out of either of you unless it is relevant, on-topic, non-flamey, and not a response to the other. revenga, stop being a turd. meh_ch, stop backseat modding.
b) kef should just not post. I am sure he will not mind. =p

Yeah, most women just prefer bishies to look at. ^.^ Or is it just me?
As to games and the sexualisation of females within them, there is really just one thing to say: Romance is dead. Most stories focus around getting the two lead characters together, but they forget that the audience isn't completely stupid and hitting them over the head with sexual references and innuendo between said characters can be overkill. There's really no relationship build up any more (if there ever was) and most relationships within games are either romantic (pffft) love and/or sibling love. You hardly ever see a game where a guy and a girl are close friends that don't step past that base, or without a love interest at all.
Then again, most RPGs and other games were (are?) mainly played by men and sex sells. Really the industry is out there to make a buck and if they have to be a bit risqué to do so, so be it.
And if I don't make sense at the moment it's because I am bone-tired.

This is pretty funny because I can't think of many RM* games with strong romantic themes.
Well, that didn't take long.
I didn't mean to put Visions and Voices on the spot like that. I've noticed this in other games as well.

Why not? I've known you three minutes...
Is this whole thing just playing to the whole "gamers are male" theory? Then again it is certainly possible that this can also make effective comedy when done right....
It also occurs to me that an inordinate amount of female leads in RM Projects have red hair....

This is an area that's always bothered me about games and the media in general. Oversexualized women are practically token in games anymore. I get the whole sex sells thing and that game making companies want to stay in business, but it's still an unfortunate trend. You'd think the amateur community could afford to counter such things since they don't have to worry about making money, but maybe they have the same idea anyway.
Much like the issue of swearing, this is the kind of thing I avoid in my own projects. It simply doesn't fit the kind of story I'm trying to tell. There are scenarios in which such things are appropriate, but it's usually so over the top that it doesn't contribute the way it should. Basically, if it's only there for the sake of being there, then perhaps you should rethink using it.
I don't even bother touching the subject, actually. We're saving the world from demons, people! There's no time for sex!
Besides, I prefer my female heroes to be either butch or old because that is a strong indicator that the writers/creators actually put some thought into their character AND made them capable in some way. Kreia from KOTOR II was an awesome character (probably one of my fave all time). A female hero should be able to kick your ass and then chug a mug of ale.

Absolutely. And on the topic of romantic and sibling love, I just remembered the incest in Lost Legacy. It made me go very "Eeeeeeeeeewwwwwww".
I've also noticed that I tend to not play games that have the character's relationships already established. For example if the main character already has a bf/gf or is married, or a game in which two brothers decide to go on an adventure, stuff like that.

How would you know that until you started up the game? Is it like, you start up the game, get past the intro, and after the first dungeon, and our hero Alex has a conversation with Ashley, and the news hits you like a ton of bricks and you go 'ALEX IS ALREADY TAKEN? I'M SHUTTING THIS DOWN IMMEDIATELY'
I read the characters tab. :D But it's not like I said I'd quit the game, I said I'm not into those types of games.
I know, sorry if I seemed defensive. It's just that, I dunno, characters are a really important thing in rpgs to me and forming relationships, especially romantic ones, makes the gaming experience that much better. It's not like Alex won't meet other cool PCs, but I'd just rather witness Alex and Ashley's meeting, with all the banshees flying around and trying to take over the world.
Well I mean, I know that's a preference and all, but outright not playing games that have relationships already established? That seems rather limiting! Especially considering the saturation of games nowadays where Joe meets Jane, there may be a lot of interesting gems out there where Joe already knows Jane (like FFIV, for example), and instead the characterization between those characters focuses on the maturation and maintaining of the relationship as opposed to them just meeting.
There are a lot of ways to enjoy a romance, a relationship, or a brotherhood, and just limiting yourself to one way can have you missing out on a lot of fun!

It just so happens that one of my game's main character's first lines is a comment on the female lead's impressive bust size. Maybe I should rethink my writing choices...
But then again, she is really stacked after all.
...
I think the problem might run deeper than I thought.
Actually, isn't it exactly like that in most JRPGs? Even in the cases where the girl has an obvious romantic interest in the guy, the former is too much of a coward to admit it, and the latter is usually too dense or innocent to realize (kinda ironic if you stop to think about it). I barely remember the last time I saw the word "love" used in a romantic context in an RPG.

That still isn't "close friends". That's more of "sexual tension all over the place". (And unanswered love and all that other stuff that sitcoms are made of)
There's not a whole lot of "we're really good buddies. Rock on!". You'll find that with the hero and his sidekick. But the sidekick in this case is never of the opposite gender.
But yeah it's true. Love usually isn't a big part of the RPGs. It's like action movies. Somewhere between the second and the third act the guy and girl get together but it's not really the point, instead it's just the short downtime before the Final Showdown.

Also, everyone knows the Japanese are a particularly perverted society.
You might want to rethink this, unless you've actually been to Japan and have extensively researched the topics of Japanese sexuality, pornography, and self image. As someone who actually has, this is not the case. ;)
I tend to use a lot of female main protagonists in my games, simply because I don't see them used that much in other games or anywhere else in the entertainment business. I try to portray women based on their character, and not their appearance and features. I hate hate HATE damsels in distress, or any other situation where women are portrayed as weak and dick-hungry. Needless to say, I sometimes tend to fall into that trap almost unwittingly. I can admit that I'm pretty much as horny as most other nerdy gamers are, and don't necessarily mind seeing big-busted whores. As a result, however, those characters become nothing but eye candy for me, and I overall lose any reason to care about that character (many of such are also portrayed with annoying personalities).
I say, for a sake of having a voice, that you should keep the sexualization with women at a minimum. While we are trying to entertain, we should also make content as believable as possible.
Fact of life:
> Most girls often do not initiate relationships with the opposite sex, especially when they haven't known that person for a while.
> Unless they are going to some club, girls will almost always dress decently in public, nothing that shows the bare, full midriff.
> Girls have just a variety of personalities as men do, not just "Shy and peaceful" or "bad tempered and whiny".
Hope that made sense... Oh and lol @ revengatard.

Most of the girls out here have such low self-estem that they feel that they have to show off as much as they can to get attention. It's pretty sad to see, honestly.
But that's for a different topic. Just throwing it out here.
