I loved the bits with Laguna/Kiros/Ward. Squall and co. is boring.
lol

I am sure Squenix is enjoying their 39/40 and Famitsu is enjoying their bribe disguised as consultation fees and pseudo-sponsorship money.
it's a caring sharing relationship
Would it really change anything
I hear a lot of people say that reviews are just based on bribed.

Does this come from a news story or something? Or is it all fabricated?

welcome to the world of major reviewers. this has been fairly standard practice for the past decade
I think stuff like

Sonic 2006 on Wikipedia
Dave Halverson of Play Magazine is notable for initially giving the game its biggest praise; a score of 9.5 for the Xbox 360 version. This was dropped down to 8.5 in the next issue, with Halverson explaining how he was incorrectly told that the load times and glitches in his review copy would not be in the finished product. Later, Halverson gave the PS3 version a 5.5, expressing his disgust not only for how the glitches and load times had not improved, but how the game actually ran marginally worse despite the extra development time.

helps feed the fire. It isn't real evidence but damn if it doesn't make people wonder. I don't know if anybody has outright admitted to being paid out though
someone i know who has worked for PC Zone for a while tells me this is the case

Are you fabricating this, or do you have something this comes from?

No, I've actually heard of this. From what I understand it does happen a LOT. Look it up, and do a little digging, you'd be surprised.
I totally get that, it was just that I was hoping someone else had already done the digging because people were talking about it like it was common knowledge. I'll put digging on my to-do list.
CANUCK HOW DID YOU MOVE THAT POST

Remember that Kane & Lynch fisaco over at Gamespot? They paid a wadful of money to Gamespot to have their game PLASTERED all over their site, and then Jeff Gerstmann (reviewer) rips it apart and gave it a 6 as a consolation prize once he finally gets a review copy. Very soon after, Jeff was fired.

That being said, however, It's easy to see how something else could have been a factor, and some bad timing lead to a misunderstanding by the general public. Word of God is that Jeff's reviews were unprofessional, and that was why he was fired.

yeah idk why it gets slammed (i do know it's because people crave their precious formula)

a simple story that works is better than a car crash in all cases
rebuttal: orphanage plot twist

I've never heard anyone criticize FF8's plot for being too simple. However I have heard it criticized for many other reasons.

That orphanage thing, jesus!! if they had changed like 1 line it would have been perfectly fine. Like, you have a bunch of kids who are orphans right. the orphanage shuts down so where do they have to go?? Well yeah, they end up in various branches of a military organization that trains from a young age, especially b/c the people who ran the orphanage founded it! it is also acceptable to me that they were forgetting their earlier memories because of the gf, like, if you want to get into dumb fantasy mechanics it makes sense that it would have to occupy a space in the mind, and hey, why not start at the earliest memories. It was set up early in the story that there could be dangers to using them ("some other gardens dont use gfs because of the side effects") idk, the only reason it came off as lame was because it was not handled very well i.e. irvine: guess what guys!!. but basically all the pieces were in place to make it reasonably believable so i cannot really fault it as super bad writing. I think people who hate ff8 ride that point too hard without really thinking about it!
