Square hasn't really produced anything memorable since they decided to say "Fuck you, America". Has anyone else noticed the quality of games coming out of Japan has been getting worse and worse, especially in terms of RPGs? They are pretty much interchangeable in terms of bullshit cutscenes followed by overly complex (sometimes only in their nomenclature, though) battle systems and terrible dialogue.
Super Mario RPG had an excellent translation and was overall a fun, offbeat game with great systems. Part of that is because Japanese developers were still working with limited media (especially in terms of storage) and were still aiming at a world-wide audience. Once the storage aspect was overcome by CD (and then DVDs and Blu-Rays), cutscenes became commonplace (and usually terrible). Japanese people apparently only value one thing: ANIMU and everything else is absolutely secondary to that. To all the people who like games because they are enjoyable and not because they are extensions of the anime they enjoy watching, jRPGs are just terrible.
You know game I miss? Secret of Evermore. That game stirs something in me, even to this day. Its enjoyable story, its vibrant locales, its incredibly atmospheric music and sound design. It was a great game. Some people didn't enjoy it, but it provided a lot of things great RPGs provide without being in the least way pretentious about itself. Of course, Square closed down the entire studio that produced it in what I can only imagine was a fit of Bushido-fueled rage, but I still loved that game.
To summarize: fuck you, Japan.

Japan actually is really in love with America. I'm not sure where you're getting the aiming at a world-wide audience thing from back in the snes days. This was hardly the case. It is now though, since the American market is pretty much where all the $$$ is in gaming these days, so now Japan is aiming at a world-wide audience. They're putting ff13 on the 360 just for us. They're obsessed.
As far as quality, I dunno. There are some really really good rpgs out (valkyria chronicles). You just have to ignore the milking of certain games.

I'm not convinced Square's decline is caused by a shift in audience focus. Things change over time - perceptions change, teams change, people leave, and retire. Its apparent that the people responsible for games like Super Mario RPG and FF6 are long gone. Unfortunately; the people who brought you such "classics" as FF7 are still amongst them; which is why you get low grade garbage like Star Ocean 3 / 4 and Kingdom Hearts. (Not saying that the same teams or people made the above games)
The decline came from people developing standards and applying them to new games and looking at old games via nostalgia goggles.

Plenty of people really enjoy FFXII, The World Ends With You is fresh and original, and DRAGON QUEST EIGHT HELLO THERE (and the DS remake of DQIV is also truly enjoyable and memorable).
I really don't get this SQUENIX IS DYING stuff. I'm not a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts, but I know people who do like the games a lot. While I try to save their souls with Suikoden V and FFVI, there are these folks with different tastes than a small group of angry e-nerds. They are getting some of what they want, and we're getting Dragon Quest 9. I'm pleased.
It's because somehow people can stand a combat system where you walk up to an enemy and hit (or if you are feeling lucky and holding+releasing) B and hope the collision detection isn't shitting a brick or the enemy isn't attacking back which will make the game either dodge for you or it will be an enemy skill which just plain will hit you every single time because the player has no control over what hits them. Or the player can use their own skills which comes down to making every other attack option pointless, only using one skill over and over, or pausing the game for flashy effects (It's like KH2 reaction commands except they only do damage). And none of them require any skill or effort behind the game.
Then you actually make combat not retarded and allow the player some degree of control over the character but now we got Winnie the Pooh and that makes the game worse than the ones described above. Yes KH2 has the flowchart but I can describe SoM's flow much easier:
Here's SoE:
Or the mystery of how Star Ocean 2 isn't grouped with 3 and 4 for being a huge pile of terrible games in about every way possible.

Are you fighting a boss?
Yes: Spam magic, making the entire fight irrelevant
No: Spam B when at 100%

Are you in Omnitopia?
Yes: Spam the Dog making the Boy irrelevant (except keeping him alive, use that invulnerability spell)
No:
Are you fighting a boss?
Yes:
Do you have crush?
Yes: Spam Crush (every other attack skill is useless)
No: Well the first three bosses just require spamming B.
If you're fighting the Snake turn on TV or something because it is going to be a long and tedious fight
No: Spam B

Hey hey hey. Overrated or no, FF7 was 'not' a bad game.

Agreed. Also agreed with Craze.

post=120183FFT is still as good today as it was back in the day, There are some games that withstand the test of time. FF7 is not one of them.

At least to you it isn't.
Well, if you can still sit through FF7 with a straight face, more power to you I guess.
I find it amusing how people debate and squabble over things that are in fact a matter of personal preference.

I find it amusing that you're easily amused.
So there.
Take that.

As soon as someone volunteers to do the CSS for my gamepage I'll do a massive update.

'Enjoyable' and 'Good' are two different metrics although I believe they aren't completely inclusive or exclusive from each other. People could enjoy games because of nostalgia goggles, it's so bad its hilarious (why I enjoyed Sonic 2006), playing with others or simply spectators while sharing drinks (although this scenario questions if the fun is coming from the game or the company), or it could just be because the game is 'Good'. Personal preference does come into play when a game is 'Enjoyable'. I do not like racing games; I can't stand playing them. Does that mean that there are no good racing games? Of course not. Hell I don't like Shadow of the Colossus but I wouldn't say the game is terrible, bad, or mediocre by any means.
Another comparison, but it is a different medium: 11-year younger me enjoyed the Phantom Menace when it first came out. Hell some kids still enjoy TPM. TPM also made millions. Yet the movie is absolute trash from any objective standpoint except the score. People enjoying the movie or the profit it made does not redeem TPM from being a terrible movie.

Fixed that for you.
This is starting to get into
