THE FINAL FANTASY XIII TOPIC
Posts
There was the part where the villains wanted a good guy to become a furry Ragnarok and kill everybody and summon the maker.
Still feels like it was written by monkeys though.
Also GRS I have to disagree with you on the graphics. The graphics and visuals are pretty much nothing short of incredible!

The terrain looks horrible. The characters are half decent.
I guess I just mean the quality of the graphics in general, not the characters or whatever in particular. It's pretty impressive when it's hard to tell an FMV from regular gameplay.
Just got the game today, and been playing for a couple of hours, and I have to say, Vanille's voice is realllly annoying when she talks... when you're hearing her thoughts, it's okay, but gawd, I'd hate to know her in person.
In anycase, been enjoying the speed of the battle system, 3 second victories are pretty satisfying, and I haven't unlocked everything yet. Can tell this games gonna eat into my time over the break like no other game.

Don't get used to it. This is the most challenging Final Fantasy to date.
Yeah as I've read/heard/seen. Ahwell, I'll savour those victories while they last. Just got past the battle with Anima (Reeeally short time into the game) soo yeah
post=131199Did I miss something, there? Because I didn't quite get what that was all about...
Bad guy: "I want you all to kill Orphan."
Party: "We aren't your pawns, we're gonna follow our own path!" *kills Orphan, anyway*
Party: "Take that, fal'cie! That'll teach you to give us orders that we'll b!tch and moan about and then do, anyway!"
I noticed that too. I thought I missed something at first, but upon relooking at it, I'm pretty sure that the good guys were fighting fate by going against barthandelus' wishes, which as it turned out were
his intention the entire time
Well thank god for shrouds carrying over into forced battles :D Aegisol made Odin far easier than the first two times fought him, allowign me to blitz him with magic and not have to constantly have Hope as a medic.
Edit: Argh, why are Shrouds in such a short supply... I could do with some for the Brynhildr fight... damn random drops >.>

Did I mention how I was waiting for my brother to bring over an English copy, but then I saw it used in a store for 1700 yen (about 20 bucks)?
So I'm playing it, and the language it uses is heavy on the slang and technical terms, but it's still going pretty good. I'm still at the very beginning for I only have a few initial impressions:
It's like Xenosaga, only not shitty
Battles are fast, really fast
it fucks the idea of the fundamentals of an RPG being important, and gives shit loads of icing.
Beautiful amazing graphics.
What the hell? Lucy? I'll have to check Wikipedia what it really is... ohh... L'Cie.. it was more fun when I thought it was Lucy.
When they took all this shit out of RPGs, wait made them think treasure chests were one thing that would be good to leave in?
Initial review score

That was an issue I was still having at the end of the game. There's an accessory that makes them drop more often, but it still doesn't really help.
Shroud drop rates are inversely proportional to your rating. I imagine they're like rare drops where they don't even drop for certain ratings. Thankfully you can start buying x-sols except the TP one in Chapter 13.
Wait, they're inversly proportional O.o So a lower rating = More likely... great, maybe I should go fail at some battles so I have a few Fortisols and Aegisols before I fight Cid (So I don't have to start out with Sazh and Vanille in Synergst and Sabateur roles).
Speaking of Cid, what's the best strategy for him? I've got him 3/4s of the way down with a Lightning/Sazh/Vanille (My main party) and Snow/Sazh/Vanille party (Snow's got the Highest HP at the moment). I'm tempted to try with Lightning/Snow/Sazh, after boosting Lightning's Medic role a little, the plan being to leave Snow in his Sentinel role, go offensive with the others (Espec Light, having around 460 Strength thanks to my accessories) and heal snow when needed, only problem being Seraphic Ray.
Also what is the maximum that statistics can reach? Just so I know how far I can push Light's strength.

Launch him! He'll change forms a bit before half health but he can't if he's launched. Try and stagger him just before he changes and start hitting him with Ravagers (after launching) to build up the chain gauge. Have a Saboteur out to land some debuffs while he's staggered too, they land easier when the target is staggered. After building up the chain gauge switch to a paradigm with more commandos to increase your damage output and hope he drops before the stagger gauge does.
I think I was going Fang/Lightning/Sazh, popped shrouds, and did the pre-transform stagger before they wore off and killed him.
If you're having trouble, remember that Sumnmons are your Get Out of Jail Free card. They'll fully restore your party including revive dead characters and remove debuffs, you're practically invulnerable while the summon is out to the point that the summon can revive your party leader if they die without a game over, and they can build up the stagger gauge, and they are a hole 1 TP more expensive than Renew.
Max Stats: There isn't any cap, but I'm not sure how high characters can get without equipment. I'd ballpark around 1800 strength for Lightning but I can't say for certain.

I found FFXIII pretty good, despite all the flaming I hear about it. But, I didn't start playing FF until 7, and I've delved back as far as FF3, so maybe I just don't have the expectations for the game others have. But all in all, I still would give it a 9/10, my biggest problem was Chapter 11, they should warn you before you get into a fight with a behemoth that has fricken thundaga and laid out my group in under a minute. Plus, the story had its annoyances, especially Vanille, man she was annoying as all hell. What is she anyway? British? Australian? From America? Her accent changes more than her bipolar attitude. But I digress.
It was still a good game.

it fucks the idea of the fundamentals of an RPG being important
Which is why I didn't really like it.
What the fuck is with the ending of this game. It went from really cool to really bad to just okay.
I'm pretty sure the whole thing was a "whoops, we spent too much time on graphics" and not much thought actually went into this.
FAL'CIE SMOKE AND MIRRORS, WHAT A GREAT WAY TO PLUG A PLOT HOLE!
I really like how they tied the logo together in the last scene though. The boxart of the game is a huge spoiler but it's kinda impossible to know what it is until you beat the game.

The whole story falls apart at the plot twist in Chapter 9. Before that it still has somewhere to go but after that it's like everything came down to shoehorning in the Chapter 11 and 12 intro movies.
*edit*
To correct myself, the entire damn game is based around writing plot around the cutscenes (see: Chapter 8). It isn't anything that new to the series (see end of disk 1 in FF8) but FF13 reeks of it. At least the others integrated their duper-super cutscenes into the story better than 13 (which isn't saying much).

Okay, I can finally post a comment in this thread as I have just had my first, 6-hour taste of FF13.
The game started out really fun.
I found the battle system MUCH more acceptable than that of FF12; it's not as enjoyable as FF9's (and the games before it) battle system, but I actually liked it, for the most part. The storyline was good, as well; though, I didn't delve far enough into the game before I stopped playing to get a lot of the plot. Graphics were acceptable (though, I never judge a game harshly because of it's graphics). Those were pretty much the good parts about FF13.
Now, for the parts I found unacceptable...
The characters. This may sound contradicting, but I liked most of the characters (except Hope; he's a pussy). Then why am I saying the characters were a bad part of the game? In the six hours I played of FF13, there was pretty much no character development (or at least not enough), and the past was still in the dark as well. Lightning was probably the most developed from what I could tell (and she is my favorite character, by the way). Snow was probably the second most-developed character; he and Vanille tie for my second favorite (just 'cause Vanille is cute). Other than that, Sazh, Vanille, and Pussy-ass Hope, were nothing more than a playable personality (that's all the had was a personality, no past yet).
Keep in mind now I said I'd only played for 6 hours.
Now, the part of the game that hurts it more than anything else...the goddamn LINEAR, BLAND, TEDIOUS, piece-of-shit gameplay. Now, the battle system was pretty good, like I stated before, but be prepared to lose interest quick because THAT'S PRETTY MUCH ALL YOU'LL BE DOING. God. I feel like I'm playing a dungeon crawler. Yeah, seriously, there's no exploration, there's no visiting shops (the save point has a shop in it and that's where you buy EVERYTHING), and that one aspect of the game--it's tedious linearity that consists of battle after battle after battle after battle after battle after battle
(sigh) I wanted to enjoy FF13. I really did. I'd hoped it would've made up for the horror that was FF12. In some areas (i.e. the story and battle system), it did. But, I hate to say that FF12 outshines FF13 in it's dry, forced linear gameplay. God dammit.
I just played 6 hours of this game in one sitting. It started out fun, but got boring and tedious with no sign of changing. I don't think I'll be playing this game again...
