OLYMPIC LUGE ACCIDENT
Posts

During olypic luge training today, a Georgian named Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control while making a turn at speeds greater than 145 KPH (90 MPH), flew off of the track, and crashed into a steel beam. The Olympian suffered major injury, and after being airlifted to a hospital, died.
This speed is supposedly the fastest speed in the sport of luge, and many are now deeming the track unsafe.
Why was there uncovered steel beems right next to the track, and why are the Olympians traveling this fast?
Fuck Canada, thanks for dropping the ball already. In my province, no less.
You can browse around for a video, there was one on the news, but Youtube has blocked the man's name, and deleted all of the videos, so it is becoming increasingly harder to find.
EDIT: Apparently his name is unblocked now. I found a video, but the quality is aweful.

Holy shit man, just finished watching the video and it immediately got taken off like 5 seconds after!
EDIT:
Fucking Youtube is exploding with joke vids...

My friend showed me this video recently today. That is just awful and sad man, so close to the Olympics that he never got to compete in... :[
I didn't know that speed was anything excessive (hey, I don't watch luging.) but holy shit, he was going fast.
Also you bring up a good point about the uncovered steel beams (which I presume they've already figured out)

EDIT: Here is the video in perfect quality by the way:

Why anyone would slide down a hill at 90 mph is beyond me. Sounds kinda...um, how do I put this? Like a deathwish? Yeah, that's it.
I almost started cracking jokes about dudes dressing like sperms and sliding with ice skates in their ass. Then I read the OP.
Now I feel like an ass. :(

Stuff like that has happened before and yet there's still an open air top. I don't see why you dont simply have a transparent plastic half pipe over the bends and straights.

loss of momentum towards the end of the course while upside down
This is no different than any other sporting accident where you otherwise wouldn't even bother to give half a thought about, I don't see what the fuss is all about.
That said, RIP luge athlete.

i think maybe roger williamson et al are pertinent to this discussion in terms of the consequences safety failings can impose on a sport and its participants

I agree.
This was a 21 year old who died the day before the olympic opening. He died due to a safety issue in the course, and because of such, fell short of achieving his dream.
This isn't a sprained ankle. An athlete died because Canada fucked up.
In other news, the luge track specialists are blaming the death entirely on the athlete, claiming that he messed up the turn, and that there are no deficiencies in the track (Which I think is a load of BS). The turn wall was raised, and the track is re-opening.

When you're going at around 80~100mph riding a sled going downhill on a slippery surface there are bound to be dangers of some kind. Blaming a single, insignificant death on a whole country when the sport is inherently dangerous is rather ridiculous and overblown.
In other news, plenty of people die before obtaining their dreams/goals, it's nothing new on the grand scale of things.

Yes, yes, that is my point exactly. People die, but most people haven't looked at and accepted that risk, like this fellow here. I personally don't really see the great sadness here. I think it's much worse for, say, a 4 year old to die just walking down the road. At least this guy knew what he was getting into. Myersguy, sound like you've been listening to Kyle's mom too much. Blaming Canada is not the answer, although it is kind of fun.

Well I guess it isn't really sad that all those soldiers died in the war... ;]
(I actually don't find it sad (The thing I said just now, not the luge accident), I'm just pointing out the flaw with your statement.)
EDIT: Disregard this, I see now that I am going absolutely nowhere with this
