Yea, I say the last SUPERB RPG was LoZTP. Well, at least the ones I've played. Not counting MMOs.
Final Fantasy 1 and 2. For the sole reason that I had to stop playing for a good amount of time (say 2 months or so) and now I have no idea where to go. I gave up on 1 and playing 2 right now. Been walking around for 2 hours looking for a town called Poft that everyone seems to know that you should go there but no one even gives you so much as an east or west >.<

Hardest game I have not beaten: The Running Man (Amiga). The controls were just too awful for my 8 year-old motor skills and now I don't have my copy anymore (and also don't want it).

Battletoads, yes, fucking bike level.
I didn't find Zelda 2 very hard...! and I've beaten Super Ghouls and Ghosts, which was pretty hard.
La-Mulana is pretty tough, I got lazy about beating it all the way though. Oh, and Contra.

Zelda 2 was a great challenge.
Mega Man 2 and 3 were other games that were quite hard that I beat.
I haven't beaten many many games because I got stuck at one point, and those games weren't very difficult. There's a few Final Fantasies in there.
