ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HAVING A RELEASE? (SOMETHING)
Posts
Remember those events I used to run back in the days of yore wherein I organized the masses into releasing their works on the same day, in the name of get-shit-out-there-and-stop-sitting-on-it-indefinitely? Well it's March already and there's been talk in SECRET FORUMS NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT about reviving that old practice.
However, what happened last few times with Release Something! Day was that we had people saving up their releases and the deluging the event with a bunch of stuff, resulting in some things getting overlooked, some staff getting overworked, and making WIP angry.
So the staff has been tossing backbrewskis ideas and we thought it wise to present this issue to the masses (you):
Do you want another release something?
Of course, we need to do something mitigate that deluge and keep our sanity. The big idea this time around would be:
Run the event over the course of 5 days and have a limited number of sign-ups for each day, first come first serve. Some related ideas we had were having certain days be themed days and having coinciding events like a 3-hour competition.
Having it run over a few days kinda reduces the fanfare over the event, though, plus the last time for RS9 the whole thing was a little underwhelming.
What do you guys think?

Super ultra important point that everyone absolutely must read:
Release Something is not about saving up your super awesome ultra polished release specifically for this event, it is about releasing whatever progress you have regardless of its condition. Anyone who says "My release won't be ready in time =(" is missing the point entirely. Also they will be shot. With bullets. Also the bullets are made of acid.

post=127554as is? Or would you change something about them?
I always thought these events were awesome.
The best part of these events (the podcasts) are done for :(
No.
A huge pile of releases just means some are going to get cut from any feedback out of sheer volume. Plus if people want feedback for something half finished they can make a blog post and put the download on their gamepage. They can get their feedback and without everybody doing it all at once are more likely to get feedback.
*edit*
I'm being unclear, I mean this even with the limited releases per day.

<geodude> i can release some farts
<geodude> though they will be virtually untested (for noxious gases)

post=127562I'd be done with a quickgames event
I'm down with making quickgames for RS! events. I just need a time and place, bucko.
It'd be more in line with the way RMN handles events, too.
EDIT:
From the Events thread, while we are discussing things:
So, new ideas bandied about for future events:
1) Review Madness = sorta like March Madness, only with reviews.
2) Game Gale = the spring equivalent of Game Chill
3) Basket o' Games = A bunch of games made for Easter/Spring with such a theme.
4) Community Boss Project = take an existing game and make a bunch of boss battles for it
5) Action 53, using the random game name generator = making a game in 24 hours, and then making a collection
6) The RMN Awards for Playability & Excellence = selecting 2009's best games by committee
Past event types:
a) Release Something! Day
b) Play Something! Day
c) 3-hour competitions
d) BQ5
e) Chaingame
f) probably other things that I am forgetting
A quickgames event like Game Gale seems fun!
I'm much more interested in making a game for an event than releasing whatever people have laying around.
*edit*
I do think the 24-hour time limit for Action 52 was a mistake though. It just caused (more) confusion with that counts towards the time limit, it isn't enforcable, and the same effect could be had just by having a week or two to make the game.

I am now eager for a Game Gale event, a week-long event where we make a game around some theme or rules.
I agree with this:
And this:
And this!
Types of events I like:
Cutting short, there are two types of events I like and I think make sense: One, events that motivates people to play other people's games (like Zero to Many review challenge), and two, events that require people to make exlusive side projects (preferrably themed) that are short but yet quality projects, not something that would happen in a "make a game in 24h", or even "make a game in a week".

Play Something! Day (actually, I like the review week idea better, because it's more time, also forces people to play, and yet makes them do reviews)

Game Gale would be the springtime equivalent of Game Chill 2009
In that event people (or teams) signed up to participate, knowing that they would have (roughly) 2 weeks to make a game in the maker of their choice. When the start date arrived, the theme/rule was revealed and off they went!
After the event closed and submissions were in, a team of judges selected the winners and wrote up a blurb on each one.
...and with Zero to Many happening, I probably won't bother with a Review Madness. I agree with where you are coming from about using events to motivate people to do certain things that are lacking in the community (like reviews).

If there's no interest in a Release Something there doesn't have to be one, but I was under the impression that a lot of people still really liked it and were really upset when they thought it was gone.

I was under the same impression, but maybe these people started to make use of the site functionality more! Or maybe people just don't have anything to release. Or, like chaos said, they really liked the podcast.
Maybe we could just organize another podcast and play some gams and talk about them?

Only if I get to ruin it 8)
