GAMES AND WHY YOU PLAY THEM
Posts
post=132968post=132966I think it's less of that and more of "I play games by people I like and respect BY THE WAY THAT'S NEXT TO NONE OF YOU"post=132957I don't see how, 1) playing games by people I respect or 2) expecing them to be competent/complete, or at least MARGINALLY interesting is being an asshole. It is certainly better than somebody saying "I don't play anything ever because everything (other than my game/in 2k3, XP, VX/that is over or under some arbitrary amount of megabytes in size) sucks."
And people call me an asshole.
Even with these preconditions I play far more games than most people here.
As for my bit about the chariot - it is becase "I don't have the time" is the worst excuse ever. You can apply it to anything. It is merely a coded message implying that the person is not willing to make time. Because, you know, everyone makes time for things they enjoy.
Just be honest and say you don't care. It's not like anyone will be surprised.
I mean you can't be surprised for someone to take ill with that comment. I mean on behalf of everyone else who may be wondering; what's wrong with us exactly? Especially since the majority active community around here is pretty intelligent, competent, and friendly.
I for one, commends his honesty. Straight up saying "I'm not interested in your game cause I don't like you/cause it looks bad" etc.. is better then fabricating a detailed excuse.
I don't see how, 1) playing games by people I respect or 2) expecing them to be competent/complete, or at least MARGINALLY interesting is being an asshole.
Really... Is that right? Well, here.
1) I like/respect you. (This cuts out about 95% of people in this community)
Still can't see it?

Still having trouble? Here, I'm a generous soul.

Look, I'm not a fan a lot of the habits this community (as a whole, not just here) has; but If I hated most everyone in a community - I just wouldn't be a part of said community... But that's just me and my common sense talking.
I for one, commends his honesty. Straight up saying "I'm not interested in your game cause I don't like you/cause it looks bad" etc.. is better then fabricating an excuse.
Honesty is great when talking about an actual game. That's how you move forward. Telling everyone else "Hey no offense but I don't respect you, oh and ur ghey" does nothing but ignite anger.
Well, as I said, I was referring to the RM* community in its entirety.
That's not to say we don't have shit here at RMN, but the general level of awful is much lower, if only because we have some submission restrictions.
Edit for Nightblade:
Semantics, guy.
A vast majority of people I have no opinion of. Do not mistake 'not respecting someone' for hating their guts. I don't waste my time with that garbage. I'll leave loathing en masse to you.

i honestly don't have much of a problem with entertainment for entertainment's sake at all! i am not gonna throw out uh DIE HARD or whatever and i still do play some old snes games despite the fact that they're basically children's toys. but i think it's important to bear in mind just what these things are and to also try to respect genuine quality and originality of vision etc. i don't expect people to give up doing things for fun but i think it's too easy to fall into a rut with this stuff and become like those 40something comics nerds subsisting oin the equivalent of junkfood every day. strive to improve the self....... ~ dwayne johnson "the rock"
Yeah, I get what you mean. I mean basically in life, online and off there's a lot of people that pretty much think they're TOO GOOD for most entertainment out there and they only 'allow' themselves to like/watch/play/listen to shit that they dub as 'deep and meaningful' and describe their tastes as eclectic or what the fuck ever and refuse to 'sully themselves with trite entertainment *sips tea with pinky up* There's absolutely nothing wrong with having an eye and a taste for quality and shit but I mean...
To give you an example, I love film and movies. I LOVE film and movies and I think film is one of the most powerful forms of art. I can make a conversation for hours of powerful films that made me almost cry and directing and obscure tastes and all of that weird shit. But on the other hand that doesn't mean I CAN'T enjoy mainstream, common, 'trite' shit for enjoyments sake either.
Like I'd watch a trailer for something like 300 or X-Men 3 or whatever, and I'd ask some friends 'Yeah so you want to check that out'? KNOWING that neither one of those movies, (even though I enjoyed 300 a lot) are going to be LIFE CHANGING THEATRICAL experiences, but just seeing some silly movies for a fun time that we may ending up liking anyways, and some of them would go *scoff* "those kind of movies are below me, enjoy your brain melting entertainment I'LL on the other hand be in the independent art theater in the Cultural District Downtown enjoying REAL art SEE YOU LATER PHILISTINES" I mean are you fucking kidding me? I'm not saying you're not allowed to not find something interesting that's out of your genre, but come on it's just a fucking social experience watch the fucking movie goddammit. Having gone to an upscale 'accredited 'high school in a part of the city that's flooded with 'enlightened young professionals' I have experience with a lot of these assholes.
I sort of went off on a tangent there and I'm having trouble connecting that to any particular point I wanted to make about amateur game making so if you want to fish out some meaning behind this post I mean you're welcome to I guess.
I think you mistake "this community" for "RMN".
Fair point.
A vast majority of people I have no opinion of.
That's fine, but that directly contradicts what you just said, just FYI.
As far as the actual topic goes - well there are a variety of reasons... It's a really tough question now that I think about it... I guess it just has to catch my eye first of all. Whether its just word of mouth, an interesting visual style or even just a name. It's the first impression that draws you in for a closer look. Sometimes I decide to play right away (Wooby RPG) sometimes I click on the title, see a bunch of crappy VX maps and a garden variety game model and just hit my back button.
A vast majority of people I have no opinion of. Do not mistake 'not respecting someone' for hating their guts. I don't waste my time with that garbage. I'll leave loathing en masse to yo.
Do I need to post it again? Really?
1) I like/respect you. (This cuts out about 95% of people in this community)
Here, one more time; I know how hard this is for you.

Also I want to FILTER THIS OUT for a second and mention that 'I do not have time' is sometimes a legit reason. Life goes up and down and sometimes people may find themselves super busy for long periods at a time. Even if they can find time for leisure (and people always do, as going without SOME sort of leisure leads to insanity), WHAT they make time for has certain levels of priority. Like, if I'm busy with exams, a job, and an internship, and I only have time for one 'fun' thing to do, and I have to pick between playing an RM game (or any video game) and say...hanging out with my brother on leave from the Air Force or seeing a concert with my girlfriend, well, which one of those three activities is going to be on the bottom of the ladder? (answer; playing video games)
At least for me. There HAVE been periods of time where I AM too busy, and when I DO make time for fun, it's some OTHER fun that's higher on the list than playing amateur games, even if I like doing that a lot.
I mean I see the general point you're trying to make and I agree, but I wanted to point out that caveat.
well, mog, one of the benefits to holding stuff to some basic standards of competence is that i don't have to scream like a child about elitism and pretentiousness and poseurs lying to themselves about not liking the final fantasy series on every single occasion where someone brings up the idea of encouraging actual creative merit of any type. this is just an offtopic tangent feel free to draw whatever conclusions you like @___~
Personally I hate everyone
edit:
Anyone who doesn't hold their peers and their machinations to some basic tenant of competence loses my respect. But saying you don't like 95% of the community might be a bit too ridiculous, no?

How hard is it to find 15-20mins or so to play through someones game?

What? That is, like, a game of Tetris. We're talking 'bout RPGs and adventure games, primarily. These games can take hours. And I am too busy spending those hours playing Borderlands to do anything else!

I forget, is borderlands one of those RMXP games that hope to cash in on the popular Diablo games?

You can always save the game and play later. I admit though, RPGs nowadays are a little restrictive on when you can save.
post=132941Hold on, while the small minority of visitors of RMN that post in the forums regularly and leave the occasional comment on a game may not play many games, there's a lot larger group of people who crawl the site for games and download ones they like although they never comment (at least that's what I would assume looking at the number of page views and downloads). A more important thing to look at would be ways to encourage that group to sign up for an account and provide feedback, instead of another topic with squabbling game developers/people who neither play nor develop games but post on the forums for some inexplicable reason.
It is no secret that a lot of people don't play many games around here.
It's only the vocal users of RMN that don't play games.

Please discuss this topic and any solutions you have. And try to avoid having it spiral downward into a sea of spam and trolling and arguing about ridiculous things.
I don't know why I bother sometimes.
GameOverGames Productions hit the nail on the head.
If you look at some games, they have thousands of downloads. Even on youtube, different trailers have tons of views for games that aren't even that good. (Although some are impressive...)
I wish to see more people engage on these forums in the actual creation of a game, I think blogging about games is such a great idea, I wish more people did it here. When I see someone make a breakthrough, or post a new screen shot that looks great, I get motivated and energized to go work on my project.
Like GOGP said, we should find ways of bringing in more people to this site and showing them what Indie Gaming can offer.

It's a difficult thing to stand out on the Internet.
As someone who hasn't developed anything wildly popular, I'm not sure how much authority I can speak on this matter. I would say it'd be a good idea to look at those independent breakout hits. Cave Story, N+, Exit Fate to name... well three. Diligence, feedback, (game)design sense, and even some luck. Nothing that hasn't been discussed at great length already.
I appreciate your efforts; and I wish I knew how to break this stagnation RMN suffers from. It seems that all we do is sit in a circle and pretend we know what we're talking about. Maybe I'll start making video reviews of RM games so people can laugh at my voice.

Fixed.
I am not sure why you are trying to start a pointless semantics argument, NB.
Here, a quick look at why I played Demon Legacy, using my model:
Quandary: I am looking at Demon Legacy, which is for download. Do I download it?
#1) Do I like you? Not particularly. I don't hate you, either, even if you are acting like a dickhead. Do I respect you? Maybe sometimes, though certainly not right now.
Conclusion: I am generally ambivalent towards you, like I am towards most people in this community. That is, I do not like you enough to play it right away, or dislike you enough to completely ignore it. It is like how you would try a friend's game before some dude with whom you have no meaningful relationship. Anyway, this means I go on to #2, because I cannot use #1 to justify my trying it.
#2) Demon Legacy looked interesting conceptually; the screenshots were fairly pleasant. It got my interest, at least.
Conclusion: I downloaded it and tried it. Thankfully it did not get to #3.
It is not like this is some magical formula that I have made up TO HATE ON THE COMMUNITY, guys. It is just my natural thought process to see if I feel a game is worth a time investment. I imagine many people follow this train of thought.
Christ.

I fail to see how this relates to you openly stating you hate... Oh no, I'm sorry. "No offense guys, but I just don't like or respect 95% of you!" You don't need to drag my dated game into this (Im pretty sure "thankfully I didn't get to #3" is some kind of side mouthed insult), nor do you need to post a big explanation. A simple "I could have worded that better" would have sufficed.
In other words : drop it.

Nobody here is really an authority on anything. I was just hoping to get us together and do some brainstorming to figure out what our problem is. =) I know WIP has some stuff in the works that is really cool that may help, but we can't rely on him to do all the work for us.
Being successful within this community is a very different metric from being successful outside this community. I'd say anything on this site that hits 1000 downloads is quite successful, but to the greater internet, 1000 downloads is nothing.
I basically get the idea that we're isolated in a dark corner of the internet where very few people venture, and I am saddened to see that those who wind up here often snub or turn on each other rather than engage in an atmosphere of mutual support.
Most of us seek critique yet many do not want to give it, and this is a bad cycle because we are our own only resources for this.
Also, I have noticed very few people mentioned the word "fun" as being a motivator for why they check out a game. This depresses me.
As retarded strange as this may sound, I think the new gamepage system has something to do with this.
No, I don't want to go back to the days where people post detailed (and bad) character bios nobody ever read (I myself was guilty of this back in the day), but it just seems like less discussions on games take place with this new system for some inexplicable reason. Maybe there can be some compromise between the old way and the new way; because the new way is certainly not without it's merits.
