Agreed with geodude although I really don't care about this that much.

People will deeply held religious beliefs have done centuries worth of damage to the arts and science

this goes both ways
does the scientist genuinely believe that this could cause an earthquake?
i want to know more about his reasons, it seems too silly.
if it did though, we'd feel like right fuckers - i dont think ill be attending on second thoughts. and theres the fact that i dont have much to show! haha

No. But unlike religion science like to look for proof. An empirical experiment is probably not all that useful from a scientific standpoint though.

I guess it's kinda like mythbusters. Or this time mythbusts. I wonder what they'll do to make it actually happen though. Explosions and boobs. That's a great episode right there.

This is kind of pointless. Religious extremists around the world, including the Iranian cleric in question, are not going to change opinions they have held all their lives just because of an event such as this. People love making excuses whenever presented with a "lolfoolrpoof" argument concerning their beliefs (part of the reason why religion still exists, maybe?). And yeah, there's a risk (albeit a small one) of radicals going, like, psycho.

"People need to continue pointing out how ludicrous these sorts of claims are." What? Don't most people already know that the frequency of earthquakes is not directly proportional to the number of women wearing miniskirts?

I am all for cleavage everywhere so I am not at all against this however

oh right, sorry, i just read it properly and realised it was a religious thing.
...whenever religion is involved it always makes things so much more complicated.

To my knowledge it hasn't been tested before so what if it's actually true? It would obviously lead to a bunch of other questions but science could take a completely different turn!

(Of course the chances of it being true are less than the chances of the Large Hadron Collider destroying the Universe)
I can't wait for their god to smite me for posting this topic!

On that note, anything that promotes ignorance and intolerance deserves to be fought, mocked and ridiculed at every opportunity. And like the event organizer says,
I'm a firm believer that when someone says something so stupid and hateful, serious discourse isn't going to accomplish anything - sometimes light-hearted mockery is worthwhile.

I'm going to bow out of this juicy topic; I have some religious friends who may read this, and I respect their perspectives enough to not mock them.
Check out this strawman factory right here.

I have no idea why to this day otherwise reasonable people keep equating crazy vocal fundies that spout out stuff like the earthquake thing with all religious people.
I'm not sure why people assume that an event targeting crazy vocal fundies automatically means that all religious people are targeted!

I guess the assumption of generalization works both ways, whether your the perpetrator or victim!

Approved.

By the way, Kentona, I got owned in your four tower dungeon this morning :) But Darmon II was a fun boss battle, so it's all good!
What the cleric said was pretty stupid, but I don't think thats reasonable grounds to just make a giant celebration seemingly just to mock his beliefs. I don't see how this could help anything really, it's more than likely going to promote more extremist actions if it does anything at all.

Way to go, Jen. Way to go.

ALSO:
"The name of the event may be about boobs, but feel free to show an ankle on Monday â€" that will still be immodest to someone, somewhere," she said.

So I guess this is "Offend everyone you can" day. Bitch.

Not to any surprise, almost every comment on that page is just some sack of shit going "Yay Jen! You show that dirty Muslim what he gets for believing!"
Yeah, I dunno, this stuff is pretty offensive.

note: i don't believe in islam or anything though, but i don't really get why people have to try to mock other people like this
No it's not offensive at all.

Or at least no more offensive than denying evolution or claiming that indecent dresscodes cause earthquakes.
Looking into it, i think some of you are missing the reason why they're doing it.
Okay, i'll agree that the way people are going about this is obviously offensive to the cleric in question, and isn't going to change a thing, but this guy shouldnt be blaming earthquakes on women who dress 'indecently' in the first place. I understand that it's a religous belief, but some things are just that silly that they really should be questioned.
It's demoralising for females...why should we have to cover up to get men to stop being horny bastards? I've always thought the burqa might as well be a symbol for mens power over women(not that i dont respect the womens choice to wear it). Linking it to earthquakes is just a load of rubbish.
And the way he says '...lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society,' is really just offensive. So it's not the mans fault at all?

You would think that in this day and age he would understand that the two factors couldn't possibly be related, nevermind the fact that just because we might show a bit of skin a man's condoned to cheat on his wife? ...and in turn, cause an earthquake...
...also this isn't being disrespectful on the entire muslim community, i don't know where that came from. Some people might abuse the event and take it that way, but it clearly isn't the original intention.

Oh gee that was an essay...

Basically i dont condone the event, but his beliefs are offensive in themselves!
Edit: ergh i sound like a right feminist :/

yeah, religion isn't a valid shield for being an ignorant douchebag and a misogynist*. Why is it when a belief is associated with "religion" it becomes taboo to even question it?

EDIT
*It can explain why someone would become one, but that doesn't justify it!
