DRAGON QUEST IX
Posts
So it's out.

Observations so far:
-Mages seem kind of underpowered. Sure, they can lower people's defense, raise party defense and do some other cool stuff but Crackle takes 8MP to deal the same amount of damage a strong enough warrior with a good weapon can. What?
-The plot is kind of repetitive, what with going to new place, meeting NPCs, going to dungeon, fighting boss, going to next place, repeat. On the other hand, the story is often surprisingly touching (Coffinwell, etc.) so it could be a lot worse.
-NPC dialogue changes ALL THE TIME. If you come back to a village you've already been to after a couple of quests, everyone says different things. Just another indicator of the astonishing level of detail in this game.
-The English localization is incredible, right up there and beyond the Bestiary from Final Fantasy XII. Even the item descriptions are little masterpieces of alliteration: plain sandals are "simple slip-ons that slip on simply."
-I haven't gotten that deep into alchemy yet but the sheer number of recipes availiable in-game appears to be sufficiently mind-boggling.
-Stella isn't so bad! She was apparently incredibly annoying in the Japanese version, but she's pretty bearable in the English translation.
I'm only a couple of hours in, but I'd already say that it's probably one of the best DS games I've played. Maybe not quite DQVIII caliber, but very, very close. What does everyone else think?

I really have no problems with this. I knew this was going to be the case when I got the game, but at least the intro story and the overall plot is DIFFERENT from most typical RPGs. I think there's just this "playable characters are blank slates but really customizable" outlook going for the story so honestly, being someone who likes DQ3: I am satisfied.

I really find it hard to think of the localization team as human beings for turning this game into Pun Quest IX.

This was my team when I beat the game.
The only advice I can give for this game. Skill point farming is your best friend, its a good way to earn some of those good skills for later on. It will make quick work out of the bosses in the game.
I'm enjoying the game so far. I'm about 13 hours in and I've just *Spoiler* received the ship from Bloomingdale. *Spoiler* It's not as amazing as DQVIII, but it's one of my favorite DS games so far.
Why does this thread have so little replies?
Dragon Quest IX is by far, the best DS RPG that I've ever played. Everything is pretty smooth IMO.
(and unique stories in DQ games are pretty much rare.)

It's an ok game. They could've done a bit better at spicing up the rusty gameplay. The graphics are pretty impressive for a DS game, even though it lags a lot. I really, really liked it that equipment changed the character's appearance though!
I've enjoyed it thus far. It's pretty fun, though some of the quests are annoying (especially the tangleweb one - Give me a new quest tangle lady or stfu!) but so far, so good.
*SPOILER*
(Just met my master again. Bastard.)

though some of the quests are annoying (especially the tangleweb one - Give me a new quest tangle lady or stfu!)does she ever give a new quest? i spoke to her like three times in the hopes that she would and then gave up.
it's probably the best RPG game on the DS i've played :) though i've just got my boat and all the monsters have become frustratingly hard, i have a feeling i'm exploring the wrong way.
also that witch near the beginning had the coolest name hehe
Just started playing this, only just gone to Zere. Playing an all female party for the heck of it, with a Minstrel, Martial Artist, Mage and Warrior. Just have to say that my main character is probably a bit chilly seeing as she's equipped with chain mail and a pair of knickers... (How can knickers be more defensive than trousers @.@)

Did you go north or south when you got the boat? Because going south seems to be the express ticket to PAIN. (Hello Cumulus Rex!)
You're also supposed to be near level 25 when you go sailing, but can encounter enemies up to level 30 (so you probably won't wipe unless you're unlucky). Not that wiping is exactly a big deal in Dragon Quest (3 and up).
i don't even know which way i went, i saw a big island that i hadn't been to and headed straight for it. yeah, im about level 26.
time to head north!

Is it me or do the Dragon Quest games get much easier once you get a party of four? Granted I've only played Dragon Quest VIII and IX but those got much easier once I got 4 party members. That said, IX has been easier so far, as I haven't been running out of MP as quickly as I do in VIII
post=149414In that game SLIMES CAN KILL YOU.
@CociCookie: Play DQ1. That only has a party of one.
It is very unforgiving.
But fun.
...in a nostalgic kind of way, now.
Yeah...DQ is notorious for having worthless spellcasters.
Once you've successfully lowered a boss' defense, all they're good for is healing.

I am currently at the prison and the boss is so hard. I am starting to get bored and tired because I feel like I have to grind or something. - -

Amazingly, I've found them quite useful in this one, mostly because the mage gets Accellerate and Sap, plus the attack-chain thing allows me to use them to increase what will most likely be the Warrior's attack damage.
They're spell casting isn't half bad either, and will probably get better once I level my mage one more level (Magical Might +10)
On the other hand they do level slowly, much to my annoyance...

I agree. I was ecstatic when I finished that one. Albeit it was only the GBC remake.
So far I find IX is pretty fun, I'm up to the point where you can start changing vocations, and I haven't found a need to do so just yet. I expect there'll be a few secret classes or something to make the system worthwhile... like the hero's minstrel turns into a hero class or something... but we'll see.
I'm pleasantly surprised with how decent the graphics look on this thing too. When I first heard that it was going to be a DS game, I had my doubts.
