I HATE CLOSED-MINDED GAMERS AND GAME REVIEWERS... (METROID: OTHER M)

So I randomly decided to peruse Destructoid.com, right? On the front page was this
...a single, negative statement claiming that "Metroid: Other M's story failed on so many levels." It piqued my interest, so I clicked...

Immediately after reading the first paragraph I had decided I did not like the fellow who'd composed the review. Why? Because his close-minded attitude towards the game and how it was presented before he'd even played it is the worst type of attitude to have.

Now, I don't know about you, but I thoroughly enjoyed Other M. I wouldn't consider it one of the best in the series, but it's certainly very far from terrible. There were a few times it irked me, yes, but my positive experiences with the game outweighed the negative:

- The gameplay was acceptable...and no, I wouldn't say that it was passable, because that implies that I would have been unsatisfied with it, which is far from the truth. I was satisfied with the gameplay overall, despite the times it irked me (like searching for the smallest clue with the first-person perspective to continue the story.)

- And--you non-believers might want to shield your eyes from the next few words--but, I actually liked the story. Yeah, I enjoyed it--sue me. I mean, what the hell was wrong with it? Are you so shallow as to dislike how Samus--a normal, human female--was so close to a man? Oh, and dare I say, how she actually got some much needed character development? Yes, I know, up until Other M Samus was almost a complete enigma: she barely spoke and was pretty much a blank slate in terms of personality, so there was nothing for them to "break down" other than the metaphorical veil that actually was preventing her from becoming a rounder character. Final verdict: Did they need to give Samus a backstory and evolve her character? No. Did it ruin her character? Absolutely not.

Now, how and why did I accept these vast alterations to the franchise and Samus' character, you ask: because I kept an open mind, and that's honestly the way I believe everyone should approach any video game/movie/anime/television show/work of art/etc or any alteration therein. If you don't keep an open mind, and if you don't keep all those stupid negative thoughts out of your head, then your setting yourself up for disappointment, and that's really the sad part.

Be tolerant and happy of what you are given, and if in the end--even if you've kept an open mind and are not satisfied--them you can go ahead and rant about your displeasure. (kinda like this =P )

Okay...Mitsu-rant over.
I agree totally... I've noticed that in recent years, its become very fashionable (almost mandatory) to attack any movement from what you (or it) was to what you (or it) could/might be (even the slightest change is betrayal or heretical)... In everything from politics to computer games...

SO many people bitch about groups and game franchises becoming 'cookie cutter' series, but then scream when anyone tries to change even the smallest aspect..!

YOU CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS..! 0_o lol
anyone who disagrees with me is close minded, therefore i am open minded

Yeah pretty much. It's not necessarily a bad thing to be displeased with a game as soon as you see it, especially considering how much games are shown off nowadays. In fact if this guy gave it a chance after thinking it was bad, then he can't be all that close minded.

Personally, I think Other M is by far the worst Metroid game yet. As soon as I heard the voice acting I laughed my balls off at how bad and awkward it was, especially considering that Samus didn't need voice acting, ever.

What's next, Link speaks?
Legend of Zelda: Banjo of Spacetime
Yellow Magic
Could I BE any more Chandler Bing from Friends (TM)?

Open-minded doesn't mean liking everything, it means being willing enough to give everything a try. The guy gave it a try, it sucked, he hated it, but at least he was willing to give it a try.

This is a straw-man if I ever saw one. The poster did not once complain about Samus being close to a man. He did however complain about plotholes, inconsistencies, dropped plot threads and the lack of emotional spectrum among other things. Maybe you should have addressed those points instead of non-existent complaints?

The poster did also explain your question of "what the hell was wrong with it?" very clearly. He did not only tell us what he didn't like, but also why he didn't like it and how he perceived those elements to be poorly done. Heck, over 80% of the post is precisely that, him explaining those thing. How the heck did you manage to miss that? Did you replace his issues with issues you made up?
Yikes...

I don't put any faith in reviews, good or bad. I find that I usually disagree and I would have missed out on some great games had I listened to reviews. Then there's games that get high reviews but I find terrible.

I haven't played Other M yet so I can't speak on that, but I would probably enjoy it despite any of the issues that were stated. I know nothing of the metroid storyline and I simply don't care. Metroid is about exploring vast levels and platformer action, so that's all I want out of the game. It's all about the gameplay.
Funny how Metroid went from a unique open dungeon crawler that needed no words to a generic modern action game complete with terrible voice acting and a cast of awful characters.

"Remember me?"

...What the fuck?

No, seriously, what the fuck?

Samus was better off before they turned her into a blond bayonetta in tights, but I can't see how this game did anything else but desecrate the classic character.

Well, that's your opinion. Like I said, I personally don't think it ruined her character, meaning I still like the character of Samus and don't believe she was shattered because of Other M. Granted, I'm pretty sure there will never be another Metroid game like this at all, but I don't hate it for being extremely different than the rest of the franchise. I didn't find Other M a failure.

And I know they didn't have to make her a "blond bayonetta in tights", but come on man, even now that they have, it's perfectly reasonable to accept the form they've given her because she is a woman who was close to someone. At least that's how I see it. If you feel she was better off as an enigma, that's perfectly fine, too; you are entitled to your opinion.

I guess a lot of passive feelings towards Other M stems from the fact that I was never a huge Metroid fan.

My statement, "what the hell was wrong with it", was moreso me saying I didn't have a problem with it. And, yes, I know the poster explained his reasons, but that certainly didn't mitigate me as to not rant about it. I'm just disappointed with all the flake this game's been getting, but seeing as how it's basically a 1-on-100 battle, I don't think I can convince anyone otherwise.
I haven't played Other M, but it sounds like they really dropped the ball and turned Samus into a Final Fantasy flower girl. That's too bad, her being similar to Ripley in Aliens was actually a really unique character in the video game world.
I have learned to never trust any team with Ninja in it's name after Other M and the new Devil May Cry.
i hate women and even i think the game was retarded

come on man
I am glad there is a person out there in the world that thinks a 1950s housewife (does everything her man tells her to, and cries at aliens) makes for a good space heroine.

you are entitled to your opinion.

And the person you appear to be ranting about isn't? I enjoy a good rant as much as the next guy, but if it's nothing more than "this person's opinion annoys me, so I'll complain", what's the goal?

I just don't think that making sandwiches and collecting space bounties are mutually exclusive.
there are rape victims who handle their situations better than samus handles seeing a fucking purple space dragon pop out of some lava

That's fine, but if you want to rant about it, why not rant about the actual complaints he made? Failing that, at least rant about general complaints against the game instead of issues barely anyone even mentioned.
