SOMEBODY TALK ME INTO/OUT OF THIS

And TFT's games look like jokes, so why is he talking about effort when Ghost in a Bottle is "an ass game"?

author=Feldschlacht IVIf you suck at pixel art/art of any kind don't use RM.http://rpgmaker.net/games/82/
If you are a good writer: Write a story.
People want to create that "childhood game they wished for so long" but its a farcry and false reality.
Go home.
Bring it on. I love how people take solace in particularities and not in the generalizations. So what theres one exception? And yeah I knew about that while writing my message, its not enough proof. If more games like that are made I'd shut up, but there aren't. What Kentona did is amazing, he'd be one of the few who have what it takes to make an RPG, but I dislike why he had to use the RTP. But at least its the RTP which I'm more susceptible to. If he used Chrono/SoM/FF sprites and got the attention that game had received Square-Enix would be calling. Even if you think the community is too small for that. Look at the Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes, and Resurrection. Those games got cancelled.
Exit Fate
Balmung Cycle
Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis
Legend of the Philosophers Stone
Final Fantasy: Endless Nova (oldie but goodie)
A Blurred Line (wasn't finished entirely, but the mark it left speaks for itself)
Legion Saga
Kindred Saga
Phantom's Legacy
Really it goes on and on. No shit; quality is always the exception, but in this case, using rips pretty much have jack to do with shit. All of those games used rips and achieved a measure of success that anyone can concede to. A good game is a good game, period. The relative lack of quality in these ventures have a million reasons, but the usage of rips is a very, very, very infinitesimal factor, if at all. Also Hero's Realm did have a fair amount of rips from the FF SNES era.
I quote again, for emphasis;

nobody played, had fun with, or was inspired by legion saga balmung rose chronicles naufragar legend of the philosophers stone phantom legacy ara fell rise of the third power kindred saga so it is okay if we frown upon or outright ban the methods used for their creation for all future games nothing will be lost and there is so much to gain (earthbound/mspaint graphics + respect from tigsource(!!!))
we must put an end to assets that can be utilized in hobby game making to communicate a narrative to an audience in an effective and visually pleasing manner

tft i never thought we'd be standing back to back in battle but that day has come
Hell, throw me in too, Starless Umbra had lots of rips and yet it actually held you in with it's story-themed minigames and puzzles. I've played some RTP games that I would group together with some SNES classics as games to bring with me on my netbook and play.

winner!
feld!
Not quite. Let me put my perspective a bit more into focus.
I guess I'm getting hobbyism and independent game creation mixed up. World of goo has nothing on those games, nor does Super Meat Boy, Emberwind, etc. You won't see those games here. In the actual gaming market those games won't fly. But for this place Feld wins on his arguments. They are very solid and Ciel did put it best. But I'm not from that train of thought, so sorry. Great interdependent games are made sometimes by one person. And by your guys' standards he must be DAMN or CRAZY good, when in reality hes still just a small fry. Who put his skills to better use than ripping or whatever.
People who use RM and rip graphics are lazy-ass people.
I guess I'm a lazy-ass person, then. Regardless of the fact my specialty (at least on an amateur level) lies in areas besides graphical artistry.

With all due respect, I thoroughly enjoyed and/or was inspired by every single one of the games mentioned. Legion Saga especially holds a place in my heart.
It consequently begs the question: What is the problem with using rips and premade graphics like REFMAP or the RTP? Using them does not necessarily take away from the creativity or originality of a game so long as that is made up for in other areas the creator is more skilled in. Writing? Gameplay? Music? Performance? The options are numerous, the choices available.
I also repeat what I said earlier about custom graphics: Using custom graphics just for the sake of custom graphics does not a good game make.
But I'm not from that train of thought, sorry.
OK, fair enough. We'll let you become the next Valve while we continue to make games for the sake of making games.

Sarcasm does not survive the tubes.

The quote isn't meant to be taken at face value; it's factiousness to prove a point. So you agree!
i just cannot understand people bitching about rips in the year 2010, it is like, hey dude you are about a decade too late to the debate, it is over so please shut thef rck up
yeah this is silly too, i would rather see rips than incredibly ugly mspaint graphics for the sole fact that they are usually more visually effective, but giving up the prospect of original work entirely if you cannot match 'seiken 3' is dumb.

tft's cool game rainbow nightmare is not the same technical level of 'chipsets' as some old square legends but it is still visually effective, imaginative, and conveys a world that could not be done using rips of any sort. his more recent work is better than this screen too. should he have just given up any hope of going 'custom' because he was not a trained pixel artist capable of chrono trigger chipsets???
i would reply directly to radnen but i generally do not deign to address nobodies
recent times have changed the battles, and old adversaries have taken new sides together against powerfully stupid new enemies...

Custom graphics are only better than non-custom graphics if they look better. If you don't think you can do it, then don't waste your time.

Good question! Where are they? Are they on independent reviewers? Sold in stores or as downloadable contents even if for free? What's the problem? If the games are so good why so shallow on the publicity? AFAIK only a very few games make it to the lowest tiers in indie development like Kentonas Heros Realm.
So what's wrong? You make it sound as if there's nothing absolutely wrong with those games, therefore why are they so hidden? It's really quite the conundrum.
I mean after Heros Realm, which is amazing, got mediocre attention it "flew off the shelves" in hobbyist downloading terms. So... Hmm... Is there no space for look-alikes. what if World of Goo had Meatboy graphics? And then say what if the overlays and facesets were the sole differentiating things between them? How would indie developers respond?
So what's wrong? You make it sound as if there's nothing absolutely wrong with those games, therefore why are they so hidden?Lack of publicity for the games and for the RM community as a whole within the indie game industry. Case in point, I've seen Flash games on Kongregate which utilized REFMAP or RMVX graphics and were very well received.
Or in other words, custom graphics (or custom anything) has nothing to do with the lack of publicity you speak of.
You make it sound as if there's nothing absolutely wrong with those games, therefore why are they so hidden?
Hidden relative to what, exactly? Hero's Realm, for example, got a lot of attention to what it is, an RM game made in a busy guy's free time, and it's great. Really, that game went far and wide and quite a lot of people know about it. I'm sure kentona is very grateful for the exposure it's gotten and I'm pretty sure he doesn't expect a spot in the Spike TV Video Game Awards and a contract offer from Infinity Ward.
Success is relative.
You know what it is. RTP/REFMAP, these can quite possibly be used well. While I'm new here, I have indeed browsed through many games and It's just that what gives RTP such a bad name is all the bad games. I guess emotions change when you play a good game, and suddenly graphics don't matter. But from a non-in-game viewpoint I'm thinking to myself that a person who used RTP to make say 7 dragons, and one who used it to make heros realm suddenly says to my eyes that it doesn't take much for me to say are these.... related? But of course they aren't! Far from it in fact.
I will forever associate RTP w/ heroes realm. Other games would just be judged by their atmosphere. It would feel degrading If I go make any game with RTP, it would mar any good game made with it if mine happens to suck. Just like those who use FF sprites and fail at making the game because what they asked for was either too much or out of their scope. (As a side note RTP is usually considered the first-timers chipset, good games break away from using this and always offer something new or different).
How does this relate to Kongregate games? At least those REFMAP graphics aren't side-by-side in a long list of games that use the same exact graphics like many of the games here do.
Why do I get the feeling that if custom graphics aren't used it comes down to *just* RTP/REFMAP/Chrono/FF/SoM? They seem so overused. I mistook a screenshot of one game with another here!
Merry Christmas Everybody!
